Magaling Si Erich Gonzales Sa 'I Do'

ANG ROMANTIC-comedy na “I Do” ang first mainstream film for a top movie company, Star Cinema, ng indie filmmaker na si Veronica Velasco, known for “Inang Yaya”, “Maling Akala”, “Prinsesa” and “Last Supper”. Kuwento ito ng college students na sina Yumi Punongbayan (Erich Gonzales) at Lance Anderson Tan (Enchong Dee). Si Yumi ay anak nina Dennis Padilla and Pokwang na ang business ay junk shop or basura. Si Enchong ay mula sa isang may kaya at konserbatibong Chinese family with Ricardo Cepeda and Isay Alvarez as parents.

Nagka-conflict nang mabuntis si Yumi. They choose not to marry kundi maghintay kapag handa na sila.

May nagsabing pang-fans ng Erich-Enchong love team lang daw ang movie but we beg to disagree. The fact na comedians ang kinuha niyang parents ni Erich at mga kaibigan nito (like PBB winner Melai Cantiveros who is only funny for a short while) is an evidence to this.

The efforts to make the audience laugh sometimes work, sometimes it doesn’t. Hit or miss ito kasi parang pinagpatsi-patsing sitcom gags ang dating ng ibang comic routines, tulad ng maki-dinner si Yumi with Lance’s family and she starts eating like a truck driver o nang idinidepensa ni Yumi ang thesis niya na kay laki-laki ng buntis niyang tiyan at bigla siyang manganganak na. Janus del Prado, as Erich’s friend who loves her but who she ignores, gets to deliver a lot of wisecracking lines about love, like “Ang pag-ibig, parang ipis na tinapakan. Some are witty, some are corny.

They also did an indie film about deaf mutes, “Paano Ko Sasabihin”, na corny ang naging dating sa amin. For us, they have very little chemistry. Si Erich, no doubt, shows so much promise as a lead actress. She looks lovely on screen and can definitely act. As for Enchong, parang hindi leading man material ang dating niya sa amin. We don’t know. Kulang siya sa star quality for us. Parang mas bagay siya sa supporting roles. But of course, it is their fans who’ll decide on this.

Sa kabuuan, gusto namin ang mensaheng nais ipahatid ng movie: na hindi porke nabuntis ang isang dalaga ay kailangang pakasal na agad as that would be even more a disaster. At higit sa lahat, ang realization ni Lance na true love is a decision. Ang pag-ibig kasi has three distinct stages: the idealized romantic stage that includes courtship, the disillusionment stage where you get to see each other’s flaws and love sours, at ang true love stage na you realize what you feel for your partner is true love as you are ready to accept him or her for what he or she really is, warts and all. Konkreto itong naipakita sa pelikula.

Kung may isang big complaint kami sa movie, it’s the fact that we were not allowed to care for the romance of Yumi and Lance when it was starting. Kasi, nagkakilala lang sila sa wedding, dated out a couple of times, at biglang buntis na agad si Yumi when it’s not even insinuated that they slept together. Kung pinakita ang fuller development ng love story nila, we would have cared more and sympathized more with them. Still and all, Velasco did a fairly decent job considering na quickie ang pelikulang ito na tinapos in only a matter of weeks.
