RACE MATIAS is officially introduced in “Indak”, the dance movie that had a very successful premiere night at SM Megamall last Monday night. The 22-year old Race is the youngest of two sons of former mayor Herbert Bautista and restaurateur Eloisa Matias of Via Mare. He used to be part of a dance group as a high school student in La Salle, so he’s glad to be playing the role of a dancer in “Indak” that opens on Wednesday, August 7, nationwide.

“I really intend to join showbiz, but my parents told me to finish my studies first,” he says. “So I finished filmmaking and scriptwriting in New York Film Academy then took one year of acting in Los Angeles. A short film I did as my thesis, ‘Like Father Like Son’, won the gold award for best short film in the New York City Indie Film Awards.”

How come he’s using his mom’s family name and not his dad? “Well, it’s always been that way. Early on, my mom explained to me that this is my relationship with your dad and I accepted it. Ever since, my brother and I have been using Matias, but we’re very close to our dad. He’s a really good father to us. He’s always there to attend the important events in our lives, including school activities.”

He signed up with Viva Entertainment and Boss Vic has big plans for him. How’s his experience doing his first movie? “It’s great! I had so much fun! Both lead stars Nadine Lustre and Sam Concepcion are lovely persons to work with. Of course, at first, I was kinda intimidated but they’re both very nice and friendly.

"They made me feel comfortable during the shoot. Lalo na si Nadine, she’s so humble. I was sort of scared kasi akala ko, mataray, but hindi pala. She’s a great role model as she takes her craft very seriously. She’s so dedicated and goes beyond what is required of her. You can’t help but admire her.”

How does his parents feel now that he’s really into acting in the movies? “They’re both very excited for me, kasi alam naman nila I’ve always wanted to be an actor. This is a new journey for me and they’re both very supportive. I’m thrilled to hear their reactions after they’ve seen it.”
