CARLO MACEDA zoomed to fame when he won the Mossimo Bikini Summit in 2001. He was then teaching math in UP, his alma mater, then showbiz beckoned and he did many films like “Gamitan”, “Sukdulan”, the first “Mano Po”, “So Happy Together”, etc. He was also part of the all-male sexy group, Barako Boys, that released a musical album and did a stage musical. His last appearance as an actor was in “Ang Probinsyano”.

He then put up his own company and produced indie advocacy films like “Nars” starring Jennylyn Mercado and Coco Martin in 2007, and historical films like “Sisa” with Jodi Sta. Maria (which gave her a best actress award) and “Gabriela Silang” with Tin Patrimonio. These films have a ready market as they were shown in various schools and universities.

“But the indie film market is now saturated,” he says. “Many people produce but they don’t know how to market their movies. I’ve also gone into producing concerts, but now, I’m venturing into sports and television. There’s been a renewed interest in basketball so I put up the Community Basketball Association or CBA, an alternative basketball league that aims to give exposure to grasroots Pinoy cagers from various parts of the country.

CAGER RICCI RIVERO of the UP Fighting Maroons has forayed into showbiz and is officially introduced in the Metro Filmfest entry, “Otlum” (Multo or ghost spelled backwards.) The 20-year old, 6’1” tall Ricci says he has always been fond of local movies.

“Marami akong fans na noon pang nagsasabi sa’kin na subukan kong umacting, so heto, parang pinagbigyan ko sila rito sa ‘Otlum’,” he says. “Since last year, nakakatanggap na ako ng acting offers but I begged off kasi priority ko talaga ang commitment ko sa former team ko, La Salle, and also sa Gilas Cadets. Tamang-tama naman, dumating itong offer ng ‘Otlum’ nang lumipat na ako sa UP where I’ll start playing sa next UAAP season. Also, the film’s director, Joven Tan, and the producer, Horsehoe Studios, agreed that I will shoot only kapag tapos na ang basketball practice at classes ko. ”

He says he enjoyed shooting the movie. “Okay naman. Noong una, I wondered kung kaya ko ba
talaga umarte. But the whole staff and my co-stars, very supportive sila sa’kin kasi alam nilang first time ko sa harap ng camera, tinutulungan nila ako, kaya okay naman ang first experience ko sa pag-arte.”

So does it mean he’ll now go into showbiz for good? “No, playing basketball will remain to be my top priority. May kontrata po tayong pinirmahan as a basketball player.”

Ricci’s co-stars in “Otlum” are Buboy Villar, Michelle Vito, Jerome Ponce, Vitto Marquez and Danzel Fernandez, the eldest son of Shiela Ysrael and Dan Fernandez who’s venturing into the movies for the first time.  TV5’s VINCENT CHOT REYES, who took over as president & CEO on October 1, had an intimate lunch with some writers. Along with his very young staff, the 53 year old current Gilas Pilipinas head coach, presented his plans for the Kapatid Network in 2017. Seated with him at the presidential table during the Q&A are Chief Finance Officer of Media Quest Anna Bengzon, Marketing Head Lloyd Manaloto (brother of Pepito) and Programming Head Mell Yazon.

First, they debunk the belief that TV5 will be a sports network like ESPN. They’re beefing up their current programming soon with a monthly teleserye to be directed by internationally acclaimed director Brilliante Mendoza, called ‘Brilliante Mendoza Presents’. He’ll also direct a 13-part mini series and later, full length films for theatrical release. The teleserye will be themed according to the month when it will be shown, like January will be set in the Chinese New Year, February will be shot in the Baguio Penagbenga festival, March will be about graduation, etc.

Mr. Reyes is told that although Mendoza has won awards abroad, he has yet to achieve commercial success with the “masa” audiences. “It’s okay,” he says. “His shows are already pre-sold to advertisers. So we don’t necessarily aim for high ratings as we’re not competing directly with the two top networks. We’re taking a different path, we’re trying something different. We want to give a chance to indie filmmakers and arthouse films. They will also be available in our digital and online platforms.

Advertising money is also moving from traditional TV to digital, so we need to diversify. We are filmmakers and arthouse films. They will also be available in our digital and online platforms. Advertising money is also moving from traditional TV to digital, so we need to diversify. We are opening up our station to other content partners. If you have a good show, you can pitch itopening up our station to other content partners. If you have a good show, you can pitch it, presen it to us, but it has to be something different and not yet seen in other networks. We want to offer counter programming because we can’t compete head on with the teleseryes and entertainment shows of the two top networks.”

The bulk of their shows will continue to be hit Hollywood TV shows dubbed in Tagalog. “The action series we translated into Tagalog are doing well, like ‘Arrow’ and ‘Nikita’, also ‘Walking Dead’,” says Anne Bengzon. “So we’re also having ‘Supergirl’, ‘Quantico’, ‘Breaking Bad’ soon, and action animation shows like ‘Voltron’, ‘King Julien’, ‘Knights of Sidonia’, ‘Dragons Race to the Edge’ and ‘Adventures of Puss n Boots’. Most of these shows are available only on cable TV and those who can’t afford to pay for cable, they can watch these hit canned shows on TV5 at mas maiintindihan pa nila kasi nga dubbed in Tagalog.”

What’s the financial standing of TV5 after it lost a lot of money these past couple of years? “We’re still losing money, but we’ve taken a lot of steps for cost control. We’ve terminated the guaranteed contracts of big stars as they’re a big drain on our finances. The only one left is Derek Ramsay and he’s having a new show by next year. Jasmine Curtis Smith is still under contract with us and she’s doing more digital shows.”

What about their other stars who moved to other networks, like Ogie Alcasid, Vin Abrenica and Ritz Azul? “We can’t blame them,” says Mr. Reyes. “They just did what they think is best for themselves, what is good for their career, but we still have other stars with us like Mark Neumann, Shaira Mae, Malak So and we’re preparing new shows for them even for our online shows.”

Would they consider getting Kris Aquino who’s now not connected with any network? “Why not? We’re open to anyone as long as we can afford them. But we’ll only do shows that are financially sound and will not cost so much. As much as possible, we want to do shows that are pre-sold to advertisers, like the PBA, the Gilas programs, E Sports, and the Philippines Next Top Model.”

They’re currently involved in the telecast of the coming Miss Universe Pageant. “We’ve partnered with Solar Entertainment to air the show live. We have exclusive rights to the showing of the swimsuit competition on January 27 and the long gown competition on January 29. We also have all the digital rights. The finals and coronation of the new Miss Universe will be held on January 30 from 8 to 11 AM, but it’s not exclusive with us kundi ipalalabas din sa other channels.”

Here’s hoping TV5 will be more profitable under Mr. Reyes as it’s really nicer and better for the television industry to have more active and successful channels other than just GMA-7 and ABS-CBN.

ALTHOUGH MANNY Pacquiao won in his WBO Welterweight bout versus Jessie Vargas, looks like his glory days are quite over. During his real heydays, clubhouses in various villages near our place would put up their own giant screens and charge people who want to watch his fights live. Those days are gone.

Even in mall theaters, they’ve already decreased the price of their tickets by one half and still, only a few takers. The match on pay per view TV is also no longer that profitable. Pinoys used to be so enthusiastic and excited then when he had a fight, but not anymore. Now that Pacquiao is a senator, maybe people are more interested in what he’ll do as a legislator, considering that he had a lackluster performance as a congressman when he was absent all the time.

The audience gave a warmer reception to Gen. Bato de la Rosa who was there to watch the fight, showing how much people approve of what he and the Duterte administration are doing against crime. Some folks might frown on what they think is EJK but when we talk to taxi drivers, fish vendors and other C&D&E people, they approve of Duterte’s swift kind of justice like what happened to the two mayors who are said to be narcopoliticians/ drug lords.

“Kung idaraan sa korte, mahaba pa, magkakalagayan pa, maaabsuwelto pa, mas mabuti na yung mas mabilis,” one driver told us. Because of our slow and lopsided justice system where bribery is rampant, the poor people are discontented and now have a high tolerance when it comes to the neutralization of criminals.

MANNY PACQUIAO’S fight versus Timothy Bradley is scheduled today but, haven’t you noticed, there’s not much excitement about it. Unlike during his past matches when everyone was all so thrilled, this time, even the cinemas where there are special screenings say the ticket sales is not as hot as before.

This should not be the case since Pacquiao has declared that this will be his last fight and he will be retiring after this. Some folks say it’s not exciting anymore because this is not his first time to fight with Bradley. “Suki na nga sila kaya wala nang interesado,” says one kibitzer.

If Bradley would win and beat up Pacquiao, we’re sure it’s the gays who the Pambansang Kamao called “Masahol pa sa hayop” will be the first ones to rejoice. They’ll say it’s just a case of karma for him. Well, he’s still a Filipino so personally, we’re still rooting for Manny P.

IT’S AN an announcement that the Philippine sporting world was eagerly awaiting for --- the Philippines as one of the three official sites for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments that will decide the remaining slots for the Men’s Basketball event in the RIO 2016 Olympic Games. It was no other than outgoing Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Manny V. Pangilinan (also chairman of TV5) who was among the first to proclaim the FIBA decision that now puts the spotlight on the Philippines in the world basketball scene.

For the benefit of Pinoy basketball fans, the Philippine-leg of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will be held from July 5 to 10, 2016 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with Gilas Pilipinas joining the other qualified countries for potential Olympic honors, to be played in two other venues – Turin (Italy) and Belgrade (Serbia). Playing in Manila are France, Canada, Senegal, New Zealand and Turkey. The other qualified teams are: Serbia, Angola, Puerto Rico, Japan, Latvia, Czech Republic, Greece, Mexico, Iran, Tunisia, Croatia and Italy.

TV5’s fruitful and productive partnership with FIBA has made its exclusive coverage of the Tournament possible. The network’s Free TV airing of the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship has earned praises from FIBA TV executives who also commended Sports5’s outstanding technical and programming prowess in bringing the live basketball action in vivid colors to basketball fans all over the country. Its biggest recognition though came from the basketball – loving Pinoy fans that have most ardently stayed tune with the whole tournament through their television sets at home. TV5’s heart–stopping 2013 FIBA Asia coverage lead the viewership ratings compared with its rival networks during its timeslot making TV5 the weekend primetime winner of the ratings game. With this track record matched with Sports5’s continuous commitment for world class coverage, the FIBA OQT in July will definitely be something that every household would once more enjoy.

According to Emmanuel C. Lorenzana, TV5 President and CEO, “TV5 and our multi-platform reach have been the gold-standard for sports coverage in the local television scene and we are proud of the opportunity to bring the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments to Filipino homes this coming July. Our track record speaks for itself having covered the fabled journey of our very own Gilas Pilipinas to the FIBA World Cup in Spain and our exclusive live free-TV airing of all the Gilas team’s games starting with the FIBA Asia Championship and now this FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament that we are hopeful to get a seat in the hard-court in Rio.”

The MOA arena’s 20,000 seating capacity is expected to be filled with local fans rooting for our very own Gilas team that has already made history when it joined basketball’s elite teams in the FIBA World Cup in Spain in 2014. The games will also be beamed to global audiences via television through FIBA OQT and its official Philippine broadcast partner, TV5.

According to Patricia Hizon, Sports5 Head, “We are deeply honored by FIBA’s continuing recognition of the effort and dedication of our television crew, staff and talents and for the support of Filipino audiences who have watched our past coverage of world-class basketball that FIBA is known for. With our tradition of excellence and commitment to bring monumental sporting events for the whole Philippines to witness, TV5's FIBA OQT coverage will definitely be another great addition to its growing fame as the number one sports channel in Philippine television,” she added.

THE PHILIPPINE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION (PBA)), Asia’s first professional basketball league opened its 2015-2016 season last Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, in Quezon City. Focusing on the theme, “Liga ng mga Bida” the sporting spectacle had a star-studded line-up of the country’s most outstanding basketball players and their respective team muses, before a gathering of the Philippines’ adoring fans who filled up the Coliseum. Aside from the much anticipated parade of teams, fans at the Big Dome and at home had the chance to witness live performances from Asia's Got Talent 2015 winner EL GAMMA PENUMBRA, Asia’s Got Talent Finalist JUNIOR NEW SYSTEM, and a never before seen performance from hip-hop superstar ABRA featuring Aya of Project Pinas.

“Liga ng mga Bida”, this new basketball season’s official tagline gives emphasis to the “bida” players of PBA whose teamwork, personal dedication and perseverance enabled them and their co-players to gain the trust and loyalty of the public, a testament to our enduring reputation as a “basketball country.” But as much as the players are the “bida”, the league also recognizes the fans as “bida”, the lifeblood of the PBA and the inspiration of the players. This season’s opening celebration was a sure treat for everyone; for those who trooped to the Smart-Araneta Coliseum to watched the celebration --- both inside and outside the venue. Giant LED screens were mounted outside the Big Dome where watched the opening ceremonies and the games. PIOLO PASCUAL has a commendable advocacy in his SunPiology Run that has been held annually since 2009 as it has sent several scholars to school. This year, the SunPiology Run on November 28, will be held to help fight the deadly disease, diabetes, which affects about 4 million Filipinos.

“The disease can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle so we want to promote more awareness of how to combat it, one of which is having regular exercise like running,” says Piolo. “The run this year will offer ‘diabetic’ obstacles along the routes of the newly opened McKinley West of Megaworld Properties in the Fort. But the battle against diabetes goes beyond the race as participants can give more to our beneficiaries that include the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation (ISDF), Lingkod Kapamilya and Hebreo Foundation, through Sun Life Foundations Kick2Give where runners will be challenged to kick body bags with diabetes wordmarks for additional donations to ISDF.”

THE VIEWERSHIP of TV5 soared during the height of the Smart Gilas Pilipinas fights at the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship Finals, especially when they faced China last Saturday which rated very high. We can’t blame TV5 big boss Manny Pangilinan when he got annoyed during that crucial game because it’s obvious that China is doing a “lutong makaw” in their unfair treatment of the Pinoy players. We were cheated. This started when the Gilas electric bus that will take our players to the venue of the fight was delayed.

“Failed to charge daw,” MVP twitted. “Gilas arrival at stadium was delayed, so less time for warm up. And some of our coaches have no tickets. Also our assistant coaches. Gggrrr! Mapapaaway kami dito. Sh*t. Coach Tab warned us about these cheap tactics last night after the game vs Japan-Chinese team staying w/ us at Kempinski Hotel. All other teams inclucing Gilas in another, official hotel. That’s not following the Fiba rules. Let the team know an entire nation is behind them. Totally behind them. And praying fervently for Gilas to succeed tonight. Let the world know 12 angry men will answer the challenge of greatness. Yes we can. Yes we must. Yes we will. God bless Gilas Pilipinas!”

Even sports writers of other countries called the fight a cooking show as it’s obvious we’re cheated on the hardcourt. Still and all, we want to commend MVP for his all out support for the Gilas team. Imagine, our own government does not send any financial assistance to support our cagers. It’s only MVP who supports them all the way. We salute MVP for his dedication to uplift local sports and we are so proud of the Gilas team because we know they could have won had the referees not been so partial to China.

AI AI DE LAS ALAS doesn’t want to comment on the remarks of some netizens that their Sunday show, “Sunday PinaSaya”, is now being imitated by ASAP that now also features comedy skits and games. “Hayaan na natin,” she says. “Mas okay na yung kami ang ginagaya kaysa kami ang ginagaya. Basta masaya kaming since we started airing three weeks ago, laging nagna-number one ang show namin at tinatangkilik ng viewers ang aming iba’t ibang numbers. Gaya nung duet namin ni Jose Manalo sa kantaserye last Sunday ng ‘Pers Lab’ at ‘TL Ako Sa’yo’, grabe ang positive feedback doon kaya tuwang-tuwa kami.”

Also a winner is Marian Rivera’s Judge MG portion where she presided over a fighting couple, Candy Pangilinan and Mike Nacua. And Wally Bayola’s Cynthia School of Acting where she teaches respected actress Jaclyn Jose how to act and dance. Another segment that’s a big hit with the audience is Alden Richards’ cooking segment as a chef where the dish he did is called Pinaupong Manok na Pretty. Comedian Jerald Napoles is definitely a plus factor in the laugh department in this portion.

What’s so nice about the show is that everyone in the cast is just obviously enjoying what they’re doing. They have all jibed well together after three weeks and there’s no sapawan or any intention to be a scene-stealer, just the effort to work together to make it a good show. “We should also praise our show’s writers, led by Mamu Andrew de Real,” adds Ai AI. “Magagaling kasi sila at marami silang naiisip na magagandang pakulo for the sho kaya tuwang-tuwa ang audience inside and outside the studio.”

YOYONG MARTIREZ had a career as a TV comedian after he retired from basketball but he was never invited to attend the presscon of any of his shows. "Kaya natutuwa ako dahil dito sa TV5, naimbitahan nila akong mag-attend ng presscon ng 'No Harm No Foul' where I play the role of the father of Tuesday Vargas," he says.

Yoyong has also joined politics and was one the vice mayor of Pasig. "Nagpapasalamat ako sa TV5 dahil binigyan nila ako ng importancia at enjoy ako sa sitcom namin dahil nakasama ko sina Ogie Alcasid at Randy Santiago, plus yung younger players ngayong sina Gary David, Willie Miller, Beau Belga and Kiefer Ravena."
The younger players are also excited about their new career as TV actors. "Masaya every taping day namin," says Gary, who's known as El Granada and who won the Celebrity Dance Battle held by the TV more than a year ago.

"The show is a welcome break for me," says Kiefer. "It's a new experience for me and I'm learning a lot. I hope I'll be given more opportunities after this. I'm young and I really want to try other things."
Doesn't the taping interfere with their being basketball skeds? "Even before we said yes to the show, we already coordinated yung schedule namin sa games at sa practice," says Gary. "Bawal talaga magpuyat sa players so as much as possible, our director, Randy Santiago, tries his best para matapos kami ng maaga sa taping. Nakukuha naman yan sa tamang time management."

Since they've now joined showbiz, for sure, they'll have their own share of bashers. "Kahit naman as players, may bashers na rin kami," says Gary. "Yung iba, grabe talaga, like when we beat ang isang sikat na team, yung supporters nila, namemersonal at dinadamay pati ang pamilya ko kaya tinanggal ko na lang ang Twitter account ko."

Don't miss "No Harm No Foul" on TV5 tonight at 8 PM.

CAGER KIEFER RAVENA joins showbiz as a former water boy who joins the barangay basketball team put up by Ogie Alcasid in TV5's rollicking sitcom, "No Harm No Foul" that starts airing tonight at 8PM. With his clean cut good looks, he is a potential screen heartthrob. When asked if he's ready to face intrigues in showbiz, he said he is, so writers interviewing him quickly gave him his baptism of fire and inquired about his love life. Is it true he and his girlfriend, Mika Reyes, a volleyball player from La Salle, have called it quits?

"I'm not in a position to talk about it. Let's just wait for her to talk about. Hindi na nga kami, but I don't want to talk how it happened."

So it's not true that they broke up because he's being linked to Jasmine Curtis Smith? "We're good friends. We've been schoolmates for a year. That's all. Please don't involve her in this. Kawawa naman siya. Let's respect her. I want to make it clear that there's no third party involved in the breakup."

Why did he join showbiz? "I'm still young and I want to try a lot of things, but basketball will remain to be my priority. Right now, doing 'No Harm No Foul' is a very memorable experience for me."
