DIRECTOR PAUL SORIANO considers it a big honor to be allowed by Manny Pacquiao himself to do a film on how he started as a poor boy in Mindanao and worked his way up to be one of the greatest boxers of our time. “He has brought so much honor to our country,” he says. “This young boy who grew up in Sarangani, in GenSan, in Bukidnon, is able to influence not just the Philippines but the world. On May 3, here in the Philippines, the world will stop as we watch our hero Manny Pacquiao carry our flag proudly in his fight against Mayweather. You know, win or lose, he’s got my support and I believe, every Filipino. With or without Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny will go down as one of the best boxers in boxing history. He’s gonna be in the Hall of Fame. You cannot take away his eight world division titles. For me, of course, I can be biased but what Manny does is he unites our nation. Where can a 100 million people come together for an hour and just be at peace?”

He just came from L.A. to get a video message from Pacman endorsing “Kid Kulafu”. “He himself is our consultant as we shoot this movie,” he adds. “He becomes emotional each time he looks back at all the hardships he experienced as a child. The film is very inspirational. It shows that we can all have our dreams in life and it’s up to us to make them a reality. Ang daming pagsubok na dinaanan niya, pero nilabanan niya lahat yun to make him what he is now. I’m very thankful that he gave me his trust to do this movie. We filmed in some actual locations in GenSan and Sarangani.”

He will face the altar with GF of 8 years, Toni Gonzaga, on June 12. Do they have time to attend to their wedding requirements considering how busy they are?“We’re both very excited as it’s a new chapter in our life kasi forever na ‘yan. But yes, Toni has been very busy shooting ‘You’re My Boss’ with Coco Martin and I’ve been very busy with ‘Kid Kulafu’. She’s now doing a show in Australia so we can really sit down and plan our wedding is when she comes back. Nagpe-prepare naman siya. I know she chose a dress already. But me, I haven’t picked up a suit yet. I’llo attend to that after ‘Kid Kulafu’ has been shown. I’m really thankful to Star Cinema for helping us release the movie.”

Former child actor Buboy Villar plays the young Manny, Alessandra de Rossi is Mommy Dionisia, Alex Medina is Pacquiao’s dad, Cesar Montano is his uncle who first saw his potential as a boxer, Kahlil Ramos and Igi Boy Flores. The movie opens in theatres next Wednesday, April 15.

CAGER MARC PINGRIS of Gilas Pilipinas has always wanted to take his annual vacation in France to meet up with his father, Jean Marc Pingris Sr, whom he only met back in 2007. He was supposed to visit his dad early this year but coach Chot Reyes got him to be part of the Gilas team who’ll play at the FIBA.

“Nung tumawag sa akin sila coach Chot, tuwang-tuwa talaga ako,” says Marc. “Pero medyo may problema kami doon kasi yung araw na ti-next sa akin, ‘yun din yung araw ng pagpunta ko ng France. So masaya, pero nag-iisip ako. Kinausap ko Daddy ko. I explained to him na kinukuha ako sa RP team. Ang sabi niya sa akin, ‘Don’t make me your problem. I’m old. It’s rare that you are given a chance like that, so go.’ Nag-thank you ako sa kanya saka ako sumagot kay coach Chot,” he said in his Kuwentong Gilas feature.

The sacrifice has paid off for Marc when Gilas Pilipinas made history and booked a slot to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain in last year’s FIBA Asia Championship in Manila. And it got much sweeter as part of the tune-up games would now be played in France where his dad lives.

As Gilas Pilipinas arrived at Antibes, France last Thursday afternoon, Marc (together with the Sports5 crew) went to nearby Cannes, France and met up with his dad and stepmom.

“It took eight hours for me to get here,” Pingris Sr., about his long drive from Normandy to Antibes. “Many, many joy ‘coz I am here with you,” as he looked on to Marc.

It was a happy moment indeed for Marc as his dad finally saw him over the past weekend in the four-team pocket tournament against France, Australia and Ukraine at the Azure Arena Antibes.

From Antibes, Marc’s dad will be flying to Seville, Spain and meet up with Marc’s wife Danica and their two kids. Dina Bonnevie, Marc’s mother-in-law, will also be there to watch Gilas Plipinas. All of them will be watching the Philippines make its return to the world basketball stage after a 40-year absence. And they will be cheering wildly for Marc.

“Hindi mo ma-explain kung gaano kasaya yung nararamdaman mo. Hindi mo akalain na ganito kaganda ang nangyayari. Parang isang panaginip lang pero totoo,” Marc says.

TV5 will be airing the Gilas Pilipinas tune-up games dubbed “Gilas vs The World”: Gilas Pilipinas vs Dominican Republic tomorrow, August 25 (Monday) at 8pm and Gilas Pilipinas vs Egypt on August 26 (Tuesday) at 8pm. TV5 will also be airing the exciting Gilas Pilipinas games in the FIBA World Cup in Spain LIVE on FREE TV starting August 30. Don’t miss it.
