Daniel Padilla Confident His Remake Of 'Pangako Sa'Yo' With Kathryn Bernardo Will Be As Successful As The Original

DANIEL PADILLA admits that doing the remake of “Pangako Sa’Yo” is a big challenge for him and his partner, Kathryn Bernardo. “We all know how big a hit yung original,” he says at the show’s grand launch. “Kaya mataas talaga ang expectation na matapatan namin ang tagumpay noong una. Very thankful kami na sa amin napunta ito and confident naman kami ni Kath na sa tulong ng directors naming sina Inang Olive Lamasan, Rory Quintos at Dodi Lumibao, at ng more senior stars na kasama naming sina Jodi Sta. Maria, Angelica Panganiban at Ian Veneracion, magagawa namin nang maayos itong remake ng ‘Pangako Sa’Yo’.”

The original “Pangako Sa’Yo” launched the Jericho Rosales-Kristine Hermosa love team and reinvented the careers of Eula Valdes and Jean Garcia in the iconic roles of Amor Powers and Madame Claudia Buenavista. It ran for one year and 8 months from 2000 to 2002 and was later show in 20 other countries.

Did they watch DVD’s of the original show? “No, hindi na pinapanood sa amin,” says Kath. “But as I was growing up, natatandaan ko na buong family namin, pinapanood ito gabi-gabi. Little did I know na ako pala ang gagawa sa remake nito.”

What changes were made to update the material? “Actually, when Malou Santos of Star Creatives told me na ire-remake ito, I wondered kung sino ang puedeng gumanap sa roles nina Angelo and Yna,” says Direk Rory. “And she said, Kathniel. At naisip ko, oo nga, walang ibang puedeng gumawa kundi ang number one love team of this generation. We owe it to today’s generation na mapanood nila ang story na sinubaybayan talaga ng tao 16 years ago.”

“The story arc remains the same, but iba na ang sensibilities now so we made a lot of changes,” says Inang Olive. “For instance, walang cellphone at social media noong araw. This time, incorporated na yun. Also, the story will be shorter, more focused, kaya may characters kaming inalis. Mas malinaw ang back story nina Amor at Claudia. Mas naging campy rin, more comic ang character ni Claudia as played by Angelica.”
“Pangako Sa’Yo” will replace “Forevermore” that ends soon starting May 25.
