April Boy Regino Now Composes Songs Of Praise For The Lord After Surviving Various Illnesses

LET’S ALL SAY a prayer for April Boy Regino who was a bonafide jukebox king in the 90s with hits like “Paano ang Puso Ko”, “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin” and “Umiiyak ang Puso Ko.” In Jessica Soho’s recent show, he revealed that he was stricken with prostate cancer in 2009. He went to the U.S. for treatment and was declared cancer free in 2013. But soon, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and, the following year, it got more complicated when he also got diabetes. He finally retired from singing and now, he’s going blind because the veins around his eyes have been affected by his condition.

He got so depressed. “Sobrang iyak ko,” he says. “Feeling ko, inutil na ako dahil hindi na ako nakakakita. Lagi na lang ako sa kuwarto at pinakakain na lang ako ng misis ko. Bagsak na bagsak ang pakiramdam ko at gusto ko nang magpakamatay.”

He’s thankful that showbiz friends willingly helped him. Manny Pacquiao sent him P500,000 and Willie Revillame gave him P100,000 so he can undergo an eye operation. Now, his eyesight is slowly coming back. “Isang taon din akong nawalan ng paningin, pero ngayon nakakakita na ako ng liwanag at mga anino.”

He returned to the Lord, who he forgot at the height of his popularity. “Humingi na ako ng tawad sa Kanya. Kasi akala ko noon, superman ako, walang kamatayan. Ngayon, ang mga kantang kino-compose ko, puro mga awit ng pasasalamat at papuri sa Kanya dahil tinulungan niya ako sa mga pagsubok na dumaan sa buhay ko.”

On the bright side, a record executive from GMA has listened to his songs of praise and signed him up to record them. “Salamat sa GMA at kahit bulag ako, binigyan nila ako ng isa pang pagkakataon,” says April Boy. “Umaasa akong balang araw, gagaling ako at makakita pa rin uli ako. Tutulungan ako ng Panginoon dahil malakas ang pananampalataya ko sa Kanya.”
