Big Prizes Await Those Who'll Join The Country's First Musical Playwriting Contest In English

AMIABLE TALENT manager Girlie Rodis (she handles Rachel Alejandro, Mikee COjuangco, Korina Sanchez, Cris Villonco) is the chairman of the board of judges of the first musical playwriting contest in English to be held in the country, sponsored by the Ignacio B. Gimenez Foundation Inc. (IBGFI). The prizes are really big: P1 million for 1st prize, P500,000 for 2nd prize and P300,000 for 3rd prize. One of the winning plays will later be produced on stage. The other jurors are Leo Martinez, Director Soxie Topacio, Ms. Emily Abrera, Ms. Alicia Herrera, Dr. Luciana Urquiola, Prof. Ludendorffo Decenteceo, Ms. Celeste Legaspi and Mr. Ignacio B. Gimenez.

Girlie and Celeste have produced a number of original musical plays, like “Larawan” by Rolando Tinio based on the classic play of Nick Joaquin, “Katy” and “Alikabok”. “I think it’s about time we discover new playwrights,” says Girlie. “And this is so timely as many new theatres for stage productions are opening soon. We’re conducting the contest for English plays as we want it to be exported later on and shown internationally. Filipinos based abroad can join, as long as they’re of Filipino descent and will write about Filipino themes and experiences.”

We met Mr. Ignacio B. Gimenez, the new patron of the arts who owns hotel chains in Manila and other big cities like Eurotel and Sogo. His desire to support Filipinos by creating employment led led him to create his own foundation that aims to support the promotion of arts, education, culture, skills, health and social growth within the Filipino society. The Foundation also provides a platform for the performance and exhibition of diverse artistic productions. Its creative programs include the sponsorship of the building of theatrical establishments and the production of performances, festivals, exhibitions, cultural research, outreach programmes and the preservation and publication of materials about Philippine arts and culture.
