Vina Morales On Why She Accepted Mother Role As Jessy Mendiola's Mom In 'Maria Mercedes'

VINA MORALES got very good reviews for her first stage performance in the hit musical “Rock of Ages” last year. She’s now happy that the musical is being replayed due to insistent public demand starting this weekend at RCBC Plaza Makati’s Carlos Romulo Theatre. She is reprising her role as Sherrie, a wannabe actress who’s paired with Nyoy Volante as Drew and Mig Ayesa as rock superstar Stacee Jaxx. A single mom, her daughter Ceana is now 4 years old.

“She’s now in pre-school,” says Vina. “Mahirap maging single mom kasi hands on ako sa kanya, pero pilit kong kinakaya dahil kailangan kong gawin. Buti na lang, we’ll soon join my sister Shaina kaya dalawa na kaming titingin sa kanya along with our dad na makakasama na namin sa bahay.”

Any new love? “None. Sinasabihan nga ako ni Shaina to find new people, go out on dates, but honestly, I’m scared to get into another relationship. I know hindi dapat ganun, but Iguess I just have to be really more careful next time. I guess I just have to leave it kay Lord if He’s reserving someone who’s really right for me. I don’t want to grow old alone din naman and also, I want to have more kids.”

A lot of people were surprised when they learned she accepted playing the role of Jessy Mendiola’s mother in “Maria Mercedes”.

“Tanungan nga sila, Bakit tinanggap mo yun? Well, unang-una, they explained my role to me and the story will start with me and show hanggang sa magkaanak ako, si Maria Mercedes nga, at lumaki siya with Dominic Ochoa as the dad. Also, si Chito Rono ang director nito, and I’ve long wanted to work with him kaya I accepted it. Marami na kaming na-taped na episodes at enjoy naman ako as he’s a very exacting director. Gusto niya, yung mismong saktong emotions na gusto niya ang ipapakita mo sa eksena.”

She’s enjoying her theatre experience in “Rock of Ages” that also stars Broadway actor Mig Ayesa. “Repeat na namin ito pero kinakabahan pa rin ako. Kasi sa theatre, bawal magkamali, walang take two. After doing theatre, gusto ko ring mag-try ng isang matinding indie film, yung naiiba ang role ko na magmamarka talaga sa viewer.”

“Rock of Ages” starts its repeat run tomorrow at RCBC Plaza Makati. Call Atlantis Productions at 892-7078 for tickets.
