New TV5 Pres-Ceo Noel Lorenzana Has Big Plans For The Kapatid Network

WE WERE seated at our table in the Philpop presscon with TV5 consultant Wilma Galvante and the new prexy/CEO, Noel Lorenzana, who took over from Atty. Rey Espinosa. Mr. Lorenzana used to be with PLDT and Unilever and showbusiness is new territory for him, but he certainly welcomes the challenge of turning around TV5 which everyone knows has lost a lot of money in its bid to compete with the more established networks. The first thing he did is to meet with current TV5 talents and personnel.

“It’s very fruitful,” he says. “Directors Joel Lamangan, Mac Alejandre and the stars were there. Okay naman ang reception nila. I told them we’re all partners and, with their cooperation, we can a lot of things together.”

We ask him what he plans to do when Willie Revillame’s noontime show ends in October? “We have no replacement yet, but I believe we have to strengthen our primetime shows muna. We cannot compete directly with GMA and ABS-CBN. We should offer shows that are different but meaningful and will give viewers a new kind of experience.”

Ms. Galvante said most of their programming plans for primetime will take place in the last quarter with back-to-back local shows. “We plan to do more mini-series that will run from 8 to 10 weeks para hindi magsawa’t mapagod sa panonood ang viewers,” she says. “We’re starting this with ‘Misibis Bay’ that will start airing in July. Sa ngayon, we’re also showing acclaimed Tagalog indie movies on Saturday nights at 9 PM, like ‘Donsol’ with Angel Aquino and Sid Lucero, ‘Ded na si Lolo’ directed by Soxie Topacio, ‘Fuchsia’ with Gloria Romero and Eddie Garcia, directed by Joel Lamangan. It’s entitled ‘Sineko Singko Indie’, to distinguish it from the primetime ‘Sineko Singko’ on week nights.”

Ms. Galvante also announced that they’re postponing the showing of their first CineFilipino Filmfest that’s supposed to start at the end of June. “We want to have more time to promote the entries so we’re moving it to September.”
