WE THOUGHT watching beauty pageants is a favorite national pasttime for our people. But looks like only gays who can’t join it themselves and get vicarious experience from following beauty contests are now the only ones who love watching it.
Last Sunday, the coronation night of the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant was aired live on ABS-CBN. Shown up against it on GMA-7 is the concert of Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola held recently at the Araneta Coliseum and taped as a TV special, “A Party for Every Juan”.
And the viewers’ verdict? At the AGB Nielsen Mega Manila survey (a bulwark of GMA-7), Jose and Willy’s concert scored a very high 31.1% rating and 60.2 audience share while the Bb. Pilipinas pageant got a poor 11.3% and an audience share of 20.8.
But even on Kantar Media (a bulwark of ABS-CBN), Jose and Wally’s show also emerged as the runaway winner, with a rating of 20% against Bb. Pilipinas’ much lower 13.6% for national households. This surely indicates that people want more to laugh and be entertained than to watch scantily clad beauties parading on screen. Maybe it’s about time “Eat Bulaga” gives Jose and Wallly more things to do in the show since they do seem to have plenty of followers, judging from their concert’s being a big hit not just at the Big Dome but also when it was shown on national television.
