Let's Pray For The Repose Of The Soul Of Veteran Actor Luis Gonzales

OUR CONDOLENCES to the family of the late actor Luis Gonzales who passed on March 15 due to complications from pneumonia. His real name is Luis Mercado, which is why he’s called playfully as “Palengke.”

Luis started his career at Sampaguita Pictures in 1954 as a bit player. He was introduced with Lolita Rodriguez as second leads in “Pilya”, which starred Gloria Romero and Ric Rodrigo. He was the leading man of Susan Roces in her launching movie, “Boksingera Daw”.

He later formed a famous love team with Gloria Romero in such movies as “Bakasyonista”, “Artista”, “Ang Rosaryo at ang Tabak”, “Despatsadora”, “Hootsy Kootsy”, “Pagdating ng Takipsilim”, “Colegiala”, “Ikaw ang Aking Buhay” and many more. They were also paired as Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos in the election campaign movies “Iginuhit ng Tadhana” (1965) and “Pinagbuklod ng Langit” (1969).

Everyone thought they’d end up together in real life but Gloria married Juancho Gutierrez (whose ka-love team then was Amalia Fuentes) while Luis married non-showbiz socialite Vina Concepcion. Luis was last seen in two Regal movies, “I Think I’m in Love” (2002) and the trilogy “Xerex” (2003). Off-cam, Luis is one of the friendliest actors we’ve ever met. He was always the first one to greet us when we see each other in showbiz functions. Let’s all pray for the repose of his soul.
