Zanjoe Marudo can't replace Mariel

FREEHAND by Mario E. Bautista

ZANJOE MARUDO’s ex, Mariel Rodriguez, has quickly found a replacement for him, Robin Padilla. How about him? “Wala pa,” he says. “Puro trabaho lang.”

Is he scared to love again? “Not really. Pero mas okay na yung ganito kasi pag na-in love ako, nabobobo ako. Wala na akong ibang iisipin. E, maraming umaasa sa tulong ko, kaya trabaho na lang muna.”

What can she say about Mariel and Robin? “Siempre, let’s pray na maging masaya sana sila lagi.”

His performance in past teleseryes like “The Wedding” and “Lovers in Paris” got positive notices. How about in his newest soap, “Martha Cecilia’s Kristine”? “Ah, mas magaling ako, mas guwapo at mas sexy ako rito. Gusto ni Direk Rory Quintos, shirtless ako in every other scene kaya I made sure na nasa porma ang katawan ko para hindi naman nakakahiyang i-display.”

How is it working with Cristine Reyes as leading lady? “Mabait siya. Hindi siya nagte-take advantage pag may love scene kami,” he laughs. “They say we have fantastic chemistry on screen, kaya naniniwala akong susuportahan ng viewers ang love team namin at baka kami ang maging next Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa after ‘Pangako Sa’Yo’ na si Direk Rory din ang gumawa ten years ago.”

IS IT TRUE DINGDONG DANTES gets jealous each time Marian Rivera has a sweet scene with Dennis Trillo in “Endless Love”? “Ba’t naman ako magseselos when everyone knows may special someone din si Dennis? Ang totoo, natutuwa akong panoorin sila dahil maganda rin ang on screen chemistry nila at for sure, that helps para mas tumaas ang rating ng show naming. Isa pa, trabaho lang naman ang ginagawa nila.”

He says that when he turned 30 on August 2, he took a good look at his life and felt he has to make some new decisions. Like what? About settling down? “No, it’s not time yet for that,” he says when we visited him on the set of “Endless Love”. “More about my career. ‘Endless Love’ is a great project and it would be a tough act to follow. After this romantic drama, gusto ko sana gumawa naman ng action, lalo na sa movies. So yun ang gusto kong ayusin, ang direction ng career ko, where it’s going. When it comes to helping others naman, I’m happy na ang Yes Pinoy Foundation ko is a big help in giving educational scholarships to various young people mula nang I put it up in August of last year.”

KRIS AQUINO admitted she was hurt by the confession made by mother in law Mrs. Annie Yap on “Showbiz Central” that their family never liked Kris for their son James.”Wala kaming masamang sinabi ever kay James,” she said. “Yung narinig kong never akong nagustuhan, siempre, masakit yun. She then talked to Mrs. Yap directly. “Mapapanood po yun ng apo nyo at some point in time kasi nasa internet na.

Kris keeps on declaring she wants to be friends with James, but the last development we heard is that James has filed for formal visitation rights as he learned (this is unconfirmed) that Kris wants to keep Baby James away from him and intends to change the boy’s surname from Yap to Aquino. Some quarters also continue to link Kris to Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, widower son of VP Jejomar who has four kids, after she said they’re really close to each other. But one astute observer says the possibility of a serious romance developing between them is remote. “You’ve seen the past men in Kris’ lovelife. Lahat, sila tall pogi hunky types, so you know na what she prefers in her men.”

BOTH CLAUDINE Barretto and Anne Curtis got plenty of congratulatory remarks for their fine performance after the premiere of “In Your Eyes”. “Nakakatuwa naman as everyone who saw the film likes it,” says Claudine. “Ang tagal kong di nakagawa ng movie and I’m so glad and proud na itong naging comeback ko.”

“Sayang nga, wala si Richard Gutierrez to celebrate with us,” says Anne. “But I already texted him na very positive ang feedback sa ’In Your Eyes’ that opens today nationwide.”

Claudine was also congratulated for the final episode of her drama series with Mark Anthony Fernandez. “Ang dami ko talagang nakuha messages and twits na bumabati sa ganda ng episode,” says Claudine. “They’re all saying dapat movie ang susunod naming gawin. Now that we’re in good terms again, I don’t see any reason why hindi namin mapagbibigyan ang fans naming gusto kaming gumawa ng movie.”

How about the plan to come up with another baby now that their first born, Santino, is already three years old?

“If ever, we have to wait some more. Actually, Sabina and Santino are now content with each other. Masyado nilang kasundo ang isa’t isa at kapag wala yung isa, hinahanap nung isa. So okay ring silang dalawa na lang kasi we have a girl and a boy na, pwera na lang kung sila mismo will ask for another kapatid.”

KIKO RUSTIA of “Survivor Philippines 1” in Ko Tarutao, Thailand is best known for his dreadlocks. Two years later, he’s now better known as the host of the GMA-7 adventure and exploration show, “Born to be Wild”. With his distinctive character and good looks, he was recently chosen as a Benetton model after making the short-list of a globe-wide search. He joined other voted models to New York, USA for a photo shoot; the images becoming part of the brand's current internet campaign and will soon be in a Benetton coffee table book. "For me this is a personal achievement and it's not really about getting more exposure or having more fame. Joining the Benetton search was a challenge and I feel blessed I was able to hurdle it," says Kiko.

Kiko took a leap of faith six years ago and decided to live in Boracay. "That’s where I matured and found myself. People there value that you have to be yourself. May pagka-rebelde ako, but in a good way, and some people might wonder at first why I look this way and that. But I am just being myself."

His survivor instincts have turned "Born to be Wild" extra-thrilling as his daredevil personality and adventurous spirit blend well with the requirements of the show. It is reflected on screen that he is just happy and not scared to be "deep in the field' as he'd describe their documentaries.
