TODAY IS the last telecast of GMA's Sunday noontime show "SOP" and Regine Velasquez says at the presscon of "Diva" that she's sad about it. "But I'm also excited for the new show to replace it, 'Party Pilipinas'," she adds. "The truth is Ogie (Alcasid) is sadder than me kasi original siya sa show with Janno (Gibbs) when it started in February, 1997. Ako naman, later na pumasok. Nauna pa sa'kin din ang sister ko, si Cacai. I came in 1998, only after she left and I loved it. I really had fun dressing up for it. But just like everything else, may ending din siya, ganun lang yun, but something new naman is coming."

What about reports that she's moving to TV5? "Not true. Mananatili pa rin kaming Kapuso ni Ogie."

"Party Pilipinas" starts on March 21. It will retain her, Ogie, Janno and Jaya as main hosts along with Kyla, Jay R and La Diva. "Gusto naming ibalik yung original concert na it's concert TV, live ang kantahan kasi nandun talaga ang strength ng show. Talaga ka-careerin namin ito at maraming magigiging magandang pagbabago so abangan nila."

The show will now be produced by Ruth Marinas and Direk Louie Ignacio will have a co-director, Paul Basinillo, an MTV director. There will be no less than four musical directors, led by Danny Tan and Raul Mitra. New choreographers from various schools will be tapped to show their terpsichorean skills.

Regine's new primetime kanta-serye, "Diva", which is her own concept, is also a big challenge for her. As Sampaguita or Sam, her mom is Miss Universe Gloria Diaz but she is born ugly, dark and with huge pimples on her face. "Dusa ilagay ang makeup sa mukha ko kasi hirap na hirap silang papangitin ang beauty ko," says Regine. "But Sam, kahit chaka, can really sing well so tinatakpan na lang ang mukha niya when she's on stage para itago ang kanyang kapangitan."

WE SAW the Bb. Pilipinas Pre-Pageant held at GMA-7's new Studio 7 last Friday night. It will be aired tonight at 10 PM on Sunday Night Box Office. This year's harvest of beauties is truly a good batch. There are so many standouts in the 24 contestants. The really stunning ones for us are No. 10 - Venus Raj (who won as best in Philippine Terno and Ms. Friendship - tie with No. 19 - Princess Alimurung), No. 3 - Patrixia Santos (both Venus and Patrixia are from Bicol University), No. 13 - Gwendoline Ruais (the tallest at 6 ft. tall), No. 21 - Zharina Gatbonton, No. 18 - Nicolette Henson (cum laude from St. Scholastica), and No. 14 - Ross Misa (from Assumption.) Winner of best in talent is No. 11 - Krissa Mae Kliner (the GMA talent who did a song and dance number). When Krissa Mae's boyfriend, Jay-R, came on stage to serenade the contestants with Kris Lawrence and AJ Tabaldo, the studio crowd swooned.

Some candidates have lovely faces but their bodies are not that impressive, some with unwanted fats in delicate places. But generally, the whole presentation was a glamorous display of beauty, poise and elegance. They paraded in the skimpiest of swimsuits that leave little to the imagination and in elegant long gowns. The winners of best in swimsuit and best in long gown will be announced on coronation night on March 6. The pre-pageant was hosted by Rhian Ramos, Drew Arellano and Jay R. Some of the judges were Mike Enriquez, Claudine Barretto, GMA exec Wilma Galvante, and last year's winners Bb. Pilipinas Bianca Manalo, Bb. International Mary Ann Umali and Bb. Pilipinas World Melody Gershbach.

GRETCHEN BARRETTO is supposed to co-star with sister Claudine in the teleserye she'll do for ABS-CBN. Now that Claudine has opted to be a Kapuso, Bea Alonzo has been tapped to be her co-star and they're now doing workshops together in preparation for their taping. Gretchen even watched Bea's new movie, "Miss You Like Crazy", to show her support. "She's such a good actress pala," she says. "I'm so impressed."

Isn't she threatened? "No. I consider it a challenge to work with her para mas galingan ko rin."

Gretchen will celebrate her birthday on March 6 and the gift to her of her longtime companion, Tonyboy Cojuangco, is a new Jaguar sportscar.

She's now 20 years old while her groom is 32.

RHAP SALAZAR, winner in the World Championship of the Performing Arts last year got an award in Malacanang for this last Friday. He turned 13 on Feb. 3. "Nagbago na ang voice ko," he says. "Bumaba, pero kaya ko paring bumirit. I just got another invitation from Ellen Degeneres to guest again in her show this March."

What will he sing? "I requested to sing 'Ben', pero marami pa raw clearances needed from Michael Jackson's camp so I'm not sure. Appearing in her show last year helped my mom get her own U.S. visa at nakasama na siya sa'kin traveling there na libre lahat, pati hotel accommodations. It's a great experience kasi hatid-sundo kami ng limousine sa hotel namin. Ang wish ko naman is to also be able to guest in Oprah Winfrey's show. Sinabihan ko na nga si Ate Charice Pempengco na tulungan akong maka-guest din doon like her."

DIRECTOR DOMINIC Zapata was grilled about his ex-GF Krista Ranillo. Is it true she dumped him because of Manny Pacquiao? "No, in fairness to her, split na kami before she was linked to Pacquiao," he says. "September pa kami nag-split and I don't believe she was unfaithful to me that time."

He won't reveal the reason of their breakup. "Nabigla rin ako. Siempre masakit dahil seven years din kami, but my own family helped me para maka-recover agad. Naawa rin ako sa kanya dahil sa issues about her, but as of now, we no longer have any communication. I wish her all the best at tigilan na natin siya dahil ayokong mapagbintangang nakikisawsaw pa ko sa issue nila. I've moved on and being busy in a project like 'Diva' has helped. Ang hirap palang gumawa ng kanta-seryeng puno ng song numbers."

THE DIVA presscon also became a party for GMA exec Wilma Galvante who was celebrating her birthday on Feb. 24. "Diva" director called her onstage and everyone sang the birthday song for her. When went up on stage, her mortal foe Annabelle Rama stood up and walked out. She was there as her wards TJ Trinidad and Ynna Asistio, are members of the cast. "Hindi ko naman kailangang makipag-celebrate ng birthday sa kanya so I left," she says.

She already reconciled with Jo-Ann Maglipon of PEP. Isn't it about time she also does that with Wilma? "Ay hindi, wala akong balak!"

ALSO SAD about "SOP" is Rufa Mae Quinto, who's also in "Diva" playing Lady, the diva-divahan. "Eight years din ako sa SOP kaya sad akong mamamaalam na siya sa ere," she says. "But I will be there sa farewell show kasi grand promo rin namin for 'Diva' doon."

At the "Diva" presscon, she sang "Dancing Queen" wearing a revealing red gown with plunging neckline. At one point, when her male co-dancers lifted her, part of her bumpers were exposed, including a nipple. When she was told about this, Rufa Mae was incredulous. "Ha? Talaga ba? Hindi ko namalayan kasi todo-bigay ang beauty ko sa pag-sing and dance," she laughs. "May nag-hellow pala nang walang pahintulog."

NIKKI GIL feels blessed as she makes her presence felt in various media. Her third album, "Somebody To Love" from PolyEast will be launched at ASAP this Sunday. On TV, she's Coco Martin's leading lady in "Tonyong Bayawak" on ABS-CBN. On the big screen, she plays the lead in Unitel's "The Red Shoes" with Marvin Agustin. On stage, she's playing the title role in Atlantis Productions' Broadway musical, "Legally Blonde" for which she is now training in voice and dance.

"I didn't ask for any of this," she says. "Basta binigay ni Lord sa akin so I'm really thankful." Not only is her career doing well but also her love life. She's been on for two years with Billy Crawford who just followed her to Dr. Manny Calayan as endorser. But she feels sad her Valentine concert with Billy didn't push through. "Nagkaproblema raw sa venue and one of the sponsors so it's postponed. Ewan lang kung kailan matutuloy."

She's proud of her new album as its 11 songs are all original. The title song and carrier single, "Somebody to Love", is composed by her own sister Dani. Another one, "You Are My Life", is composed by Billy for her and they do it as a duet. Other songwriters who contributed to the album are David Pomeranz, Marcus Davis, Wency Cornejo, Arni Mendaros and Chito Ilagan. The album shows Nikki's growth as a more mature artist who can do pop, R&B, soul, moody and beat-driven tunes with equal ease. The other great cuts in the album are "I Can Only Imagine" (a Christian song that she dedicates to God), "Magbabalik Ka Pa Ba", "I Will Be Loving You", "Time and Again", "Last Love", and "Kung Wala Ka". Watch out for her free shows: Robinson's Ermita- March 12, Robinson's Metroeast-March 13, Robinson's Imus-March 14, Robinson's Galleria-March 26, Robinson's Lipa-April 9, Robinson's Pampanga-April 10 and Robinson's Sta. Rosa-April 11.

THE TRIBAL DANCERS from Muntinlupa is the only all-female group in the Hall of Fame of "Talentadong Pinoy" who'll compete for the title of Philippines' First Ultimate Talentado on March 6 at Cuneta Astrodome. Composed of sisters Mench and Zam Mijares (both visually impaired), their friend Liezl Cabriga (who's hearing impaired) and cousin Grace Cristobal. They do a dangerous act with fire called poi dancing and they've become a crowd favorite since they first performed in July 2009. "Si Grace lang ang may normal na paningin at pandinig sa amin so she serves as our guide," says Zam. Since their exposure in Talentadong Pinoy, they've been performing in various parties and events.

Also competing is Omar, The Ladder Balancer, the 6th Hall of Famer who performs various stunts with a ladder. Born Omar Antonio Doroin in a family of circus acrobats, Omar developed his career and passion for ladder balancing in the province of Marinduque when he met Raul Napolitano, who is a circus talents booker in the locale. But little did Omar and Raul knew that their partnership in the circus scene will soon be more than just a professional relationship when Omar's passion for ladder balancing extended to Raul's eldest daughter who became his wife. Don't miss them perform tonight in "Talentadong Pinoy" on TV5.

RUFFA GUTIERREZ is very much in the news these days. First, it's said she's receiving anonymous text messages that are malicious and slanderous in content. The suspected culprit is Shaina Magdayao, said to be so jealous now that she's reportedly John Lloyd Cruz' new squeeze. Lloydie is said to be still very much enamoured with Ruffa and that's why Shaina is mad at her.

Ruffa is so transparent as she writes everything in her Twitter account. Her recent entry says: "I'm suddenly emotional, confused. Decisions must be made. Please guide me and show the right way."

Some folks think she's confused on whether to get Lloydie back or not. It turns out she has to make a decision about leaving ABS to move to TV 5 who made an offer to her through her mom, Annabelle Rama. As of today, Ruffa has already made a final decision. She's transferring to Manny Pangilinan's enclave and we heard she'll be given three new shows and be paid in 8 figures.

SOME WRITERS were surprised to see Randy Santiago at the presscon of "Diva" where he plays, George, Regine Velasquez' discoverer. Has he left ABS? "No, hindi naman ako exclusive kahit kanino," he says. "I direct shows for ABS, pinchhit for Willie sa 'Wowowee', and I also do TFC shows for them. I just came back from the U.K., Germany and Norway to promote TFC. GMA called me up offering 'Diva' and it's a good show with me in a good role, so I accepted it. Hindi naman ito ang first project ko with them. Before this, I was also one of their judges sa 'Are You the Next Big Star'. Pero nag-abiso naman ako sa ABS na gagawa ako sa GMA para di sila mabigla."

He thinks "Diva", the country's first kanta-serye that starts airing on Monday, will hit it big. "The concept is great dahil maraming kantahan. I play the record producer who'll give Regine her break. Ang problema, sobrang pangit siya, so we have to give her a total make over first before presenting her to the public."

He's turning 50 in November and he wants to do a new album to celebrate his being a golden boy.

THE FILIPINO Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP) is smarting from allegations made by their vice president, Heber Bartolome, that P8.5 million in their funds were disbursed without authority of their board of trustees. Their board chairman, Nonoy Tan, denies this. "Heber resents the board's suspending him for one year due to actions harmful to FILSCAP," he says. "In 1984, he signed a deed assigning all his works to Filscap. Last year, he wants us to run after Galaxie Records, sister company of EMI, because his song 'Ayoko na Kay Sta. Claus' was used by Papa Dom in an album. We filed a case against Galaxie, without knowing that in 2007, he signed a publishing contract with EMI Records for P2 million for his entire catalogue of songs. They filed a P5 million countersuit against us and showed us the contract he signed with them. So we said, Heber, ano ba itong pinasok mo? Ipinahamak mo ang FILSCAP. He said sorry, pasensiya, matanda na ko, nakalimutan ko na. Our bylaws state that such acts should be sanctioned so the board members voted on it at, 12-0, suspending him. What did he do? He called a meeting in his house, asking our members to join him in a new guild called Musika. Pinapirma niya ng attendance those who came, then later he attached this to a manifesto denouncing FILSCAP. Those who signed later on recanted because they were deceived. They didn't know he'll use them for that.

It's true that there's P8.4 million in questionable disbursements made by our former licensing manager, Jane Suarez, but that is now under investigation. He's part of the execuitve committee and he knows we don't hide anything. But he wants to make us look bad. Ibinulsa daw naming mga opisyal ang pera. Kaya naha-highblood ako kasi ginawa niyang personal ang paninira sa amin. Tinitira na ang integrity namin and we won't allow people to twist facts to make themselves look good. Pinaghirapan naman for FILSCAP to earn respect in the international music community, tapos sisirain lang ng isang tao. Well, if we have to go through this painful process to purge the undesirables, let it be. But we already got a lawyer and we're suing him in court for various charges."

BOY ABUNDA is having the time of his life hosting the no holds barred show, "The Bottomline". As King of Talk, he dramatically changed the face of one-on-one interviews as he fearlessly delves into the hottest issues of controversial personalities. From Atty. Lorna Kapunan (defender of Hayden Kho) to Marlene Aguilar (mother of Jason Ivler) to the Melason loveteam, he grilled them in front of the viewing public with many questions coming from The Bottomliners, a mix of various kinds of viewers representing various sectors of society.

CONG. BONGBONG MARCOS was reported to be a regular visitor of Sarah Geronimo at her home in Mindanao Ave., but he denied this at his launching as the new endorser of Ever Bilena Cosmetics Men's line, Blackwater Body Spray and Deodorant. "I was really surprised na may lumabas sa gossip columns na nakikita raw ang sasakyan ko sa labas ng bahay nila," he says. "The truth is I didn't even know Sarah. It's my sister Imee who pointed her billboard to me and said, 'Yan si Sarah. So I watched her movies and listened to her songs and I found out she's really very talented, a great comedian. Kawawa naman yung bata kasi walang kamalay-malay, na-link ako sa kanya."

Bongbong and Imee are good friends of Dioceldo Sy, Pres-CEO of Ever Bilena. "We believe in Bongbong," says Mr. Sy. "He has the makings of a great leader and Blackwater supports his bid as senator. We're happy to have him with our family of endorsers that include Francine Prieto and Christian Bautista."

Bongbong was the first in his family to return from exile in 1991. He became the vice governor of Ilocos Norte at 23 and later became governor in 1998 where he served for three consecutive terms before being a congressman. He's married to lawyer Louise Araneta with whom he has three sons. The presscon for Bongbong was scheduled at 9:30 AM but he arrived at 12 noon.

MARK ANTHONY FERNANDEZ looks younger now that he lost weight. And we also like his humility in asking for Claudine Barretto's forgiveness after she called him a liar. "Hindi lang ako nabigyan ng chance to talk to her personally kaya sa interview ko na lang ipinarating sa kanya that I'm really sorry," he says. "Uli, gusto kong humingi ng tawad. Taos-puso 'yan. Ako talaga ang nagkamali nang hindi ako makarating sa meeting namin. I have no bad intentions naman kaya sana, huwag na siyang magtampo at makabawi ako sa kanya sa kahit anong paraan. I'm still willing to work her ngayong pareho na kaming nasa GMA."

Mark plays the leading man of Regine Velasquez and Glaiza de Castro in GMA'7's new soap, "Diva", to replace "Full House" that ends tonight. They turned its presscon into a big concert with everyone in the cast singing, opening with Regine's rousing "Bongga Ka, Day" number. All the characters are named after singers. Regine is Sampaguita, Mark is Gary, TJ Trinidad is Martin, Regine's parents are Elvis (Buboy Garovillo) and Paula Abdula (Gloria Diaz), Jaya is Barbra, Glaiza is Tiffany, and many more.

WE HAVE a feeling that even if she's not part of the Final 5, Nina Kodaka still has a big chance of making it in showbiz. She's so natural and has a winning presence. She admits she collapsed after she was eliminated. "Nag-black out po, siguro sa sobrang stress that day kasi whole day, yun ang iniisip ko kaya nang ma-eliminate ako, nanigas ang katawan ko at iyak ako ng iyak," she says. "But after a few minutes, okay na uli ako. Kahit di ako kasama sa Final 5, contract star pa rin ako ng GMA and I'll do my best para maging magaling akong Kapuso actress. Nag-goodbye na nga ako sa Japan. Hindi na ako babalik doon kasi mas masaya talaga ako rito. I found out kung anong gusto kong gawin dito sa Pilipinas. Imagine, yung fans ko, nagpunta rin sa Araneta and may dalang malaking banner ng name ko to show their support to me."

We think Nina is best paired with Steven. They seem to have better chemistry together. But Steven wants to be paired with Diva as he knows he and Sarah will not make a good pair. Sarah, in turn, should be paired with Enzo Pineda, who's the most well bred and well behaved among the male contestants.

WINNER SARAH LAHBATI was not aware she was the one who won. "Di ko agad nakuha ng i-announce ang winner, kasi I heard Diva's name being called," she says. "It was her who told me, 'Ikaw' Ikaw!'. Sabi ko, 'Ako?' Tinulak pa niya ko kasi nga di ko alam ako pala ang nanalo. Before the announcement, nag-usap na kami ni Diva na we'll still be friends kahit anong mangyari. Nagbiruan pa nga kami ng 'Balato' sa isa't isa. At tototohanin ko yun, bibigyan ko siya ng balato sa P1.5 million na makukuha ko."

She was the only one who sang live during their solo numbers. "I was told kasi to sing live, so I took the risk. And I'm glad maganda ang naging response ng tao."

IT'S SUPPOSED to be a Belo Medical presscon for two Hot Mamas, Jennylyn Mercado and Valerie Concepcion, but it turns out Dr. Victoria Belo is an even hotter mama than any of her new endorsers. Tuesday, her inamorato Hayden Kho was arraigned in court for the case filed against him by Katrina Halili. Dr. Belo earlier promised she and Hayden made a pledge they won't see each other again until May 10, Hayden's birthday. But Dr. Belo wasn't able to restrain herself from showing up at Hayden's arraignment.

"My plan was I won't talk to him, I'll just give moral support kasi I learned depressed daw siya, his license was revoked pa, so I'll just stay at the back but, malas, nagkasabay pa kami sa elevator," she sighs. "I'm disappointed that I broke my promise but I feel good naman. Di ko pala kaya hanggang May. And he's so guwapo pa rin. The kilig is still there. I'm a fan. In a retreat I had in the States, I learned there's such a thing as people addiction and that's what I feel for him. Feeling ko kasi, walang meaning ang buhay ko kapag walang kilig. But I didn't even kiss him or make chika. We just talked a bit. Sumuko na nga sa akin ang daughter ko, si Crystalle."

She doesn't really know where Hayden is staying. "I just know he's somewhere in the Visayas or Mindanao, doing community and church service. I want to make it clear I don't support him anymore. May kaya naman ang family niya. But I don't even want to think that he'd go to jail kasi he didn't kill anyone naman."

So she's ready to reconcile with him? "Gusto ko, back to square one kami. Ligawan niya ako uli."

Dr. Belo is very proud she was able to give Jennylyn, mom of of one year old Alex Jazz (who was at the presscon and looks so much like his dad Patrick Garcia) and Valerie, mom of 4-year old Fiona, their current shapely figures.

"I was the one who told Tita Becky Aguila na lumapit kami kay Dr. Belo kasi I've seen the wonders she's done sa ibang stars," says Jen. "After I gave birth kasi, pumayat uli ako, but there's stubborn fat around my waist kaya 29 pa rin ang size ko. Also, I have big and deep stretch marks. Dahil sa Fraxel technique ni Dr. Belo, nawala ang stretch marks ko and dahil sa kanyang Novoshape with multi-polar energy, na-expel lahat ng unwanted fats sa tiyan ko and I now measure 34-25-34. Ang maganda, it's non-surgical and no need for me to exercise at all kasi nga tamad ako at wala rin akong time."

So if you need body countouring, call Belo at 844-2939 or log on to www.belomed.com.
IT'S pretty obvious that Annabelle Rama approves of Jewel Mische for her dear son Richard Gutierrez. At the Starstruck V finals, Jewel was one of the performers and before her number, she approached Annabelle who was seated near the front with her granddaughter Venice. "Nagkumustahan lang kami," Annabelle said later. "Mabait na bata si Jewel. I like her kasi she's God-fearing."

Seated a few seats away in front of Annabelle was her mortal enemy, GMA exec Wilma Galvante. No, they didn't even take a glimpse at each other. Annabelle was there to support her other son, Raymond, who's one of the show's hosts and one of the best in his job that night.

ABS-CBN STAR Magic hosted a celebration for their February born talents. One of them is Megan Young, who turns 20 on Saturday, February 27. ABS-CBN has lately been launching many stars to stardom, like Maja Salvador, Erich Gonzales, Bangs Garcia and Andi Eigenmann. When will her turn come? "I don't know," she says. "Yun nga ang birthday wish ko, sana mabigyan din ako ng launching vehicle," she says. "But I'm willing to wait for the right project. Kasi ayoko rin namang basta i-launch, tapos sasablay lang. As of now, hindi naman ako pinababayaan ng ABS. I'm part of 'Rubi' on primetime and I play Jake Cuenca's sister. Si Xian Lim ang love interest ko and I'm glad kasi he's so tall, puede akong mag-heels."

She stands 5'8" and can't be paired with vertically challenged leading men. After doing 'Shake, Rattle & Roll XI" for Regal, she's now shooting "Sigwa" for Cinemalaya, directed by Joel Lamangan. "I play the young Dawn Zulueta. Our characters don't really meet on screen but I saw her noon at the storycon and I was star struck. She's so beautiful. Sana maging ganun din ako when I reach her age. I play a young journalist na balikbayan from the States in the story so I speak Tagalog with an American accent. The story starts in the 1970's and very challenging ang role ko. We shot a big scene na protest rally with hundreds of extras and they were burning tires in the street. I got scared kasi muntik na kong masunog in one scene sa 'Shake'. Naku, baka maulit na naman. But I did everything Direk Joel asked me to do kasi ayokong masigawan niya."

Megan is also hosting "Girlista" on Studio 23 and is a VJ in Channel V. She admits she has a boyfriend, an Atenean cager named Nico.

RYAN EIGENMANN is all set to tie the knot with model and pre-school teacher girlfriend Cathy Bordalba on Monday, February 28, at the Coconut Palace. Cathy is three months preggy. "Actually, kasal na lang ang kulang sa amin kasi we've been living together for three years and it's about time we make it right in the eyes of the Lord," he says. "This is also a big reunion for my family as my dad (Michael de Mesa) and brother (AJ Eigenmann) will be coming home from the States with my grandparents (Eddie Mesa and Rosemarie Gil)."

His mom Gina Alajar is happy for him. "I asked him if he feels Cathy is really the one for him and he said yes. Okay naman si Cathy, sinamahan ko pa sila sa pagkuha ng marriage license nila. I prayed then na wala sanang magmana sa mga anak ko sa'min ng dad nila who became parents while we're still teenagers. Buti naman at natupad ang prayer ko as walang maagang nag-asawa o nagkaanak sa kanila."

Ryan plays Andreas, a half-man, half-goat villain in "Panday Kids". "I enjoy working with Buboy Villar, Julian Trono and Sabrina Man who play the Panday Kids. This is like preparation for me when I deal with my own kid later. Kailangang masanay na ako sa mga bata. We don't know yet what our child would be but I have a gut feel na he'll be a boy. Okay rin kung girl, basta healthy."

With his dad coming home for his wedding, the issue about him and Krista Ranillo might be revived. "For our part, hindi na namin palalakihin yan. My mom has said her piece about it at okay na yun. Let them live their lives and let us live our own lives. So we're hoping the media will leave us in peace na lang at huwag sanang during the wedding, yung magko-cover will make kulit pa my dad about Krista. I-respect naman sana nila yung wedding ko."

ANNE CURTIS turned 25 on Feb. 17. Some years ago, we remember her saying she wants to get married by 25. "That's true!" she screams. "Kasi sa Australia, most girls are either married na or engaged by 25. But I'm now taking that back. Nagbago na ang views ko now that I'm really 25. I realized I'm not really ready yet to settle down and have kids. I want to enjoy my life more being single and more focused on my career. I can feel nagbago na ko talaga ako, kasi gosh, I'm 25, wala na ko sa party mode. I want to be more responsible naman. I already got a house for myself and my mom. Now, I'm buying a condo as investment."

She's currently shooting a new movie with Sam Milby, "Babe, I Love You", the directorial debut of Mae Cruz. Have they really reconciled? "No. We don't even think of making balikan. Wala sa isip namin yan. I'm just happy we can now talk again kasi ang tagal din naming di nag-usap, nagdedmahan. Now, wala na yung silent wars between us."

Do they have a love scene? "Meron daw, but we haven't shot it yet. I dunno kung magkakailangan kami or what. Sam and I are both transparent. Kung nagkabalikan na kami, makikita naman agad sa amin. We're now shooting almost everyday kaya Wednesday to Friday, absent ako sa 'It's Showtime' kasi we have to finish the shoot as I will start a new movie, 'In Your Eyes', with Richard Gutierrez and Claudine Barretto na co-production ng GMA and Viva Films. It'll be shot on location in California starting Holy Week. Excited din ako rito as I've long wanted to work with Ate Claudine and with Richard na huli ko pang nakatrabaho was in 'Love to Love' on GMA about five years ago."

What's her birthday wish? "Well, the past year has been a good and positive one, so I pray that the new one will maintain all the positivity in my life this year. Sana ma-maintain ko all my endorsements also, from GSM Blue and Belo Medical Group to Swatch and Natasha."

ALJUR ABRENICA was at the Starstruck V finals at Araneta Coliseum last Sunday. Isn't he threatened by the entry of new stars in GMA-7? Someone quipped that Enzo Pineda is the First Prince, Rocco Nacino is the Second Prince, and he's just the Last Prince.

"No, the truth is I'm excited for them and I'm happy na naragdagan ang aming Starstruck family," he says. "Ang bets ko talaga are Diva Montelaba and Rocco, but I'm not disappointed that others won. Deserving naman silang lahat. I'm willing to work with all of them and, with my two-year background in showbiz, puede akong maging Kuya nila who'll help guide them. Also, kaming mga nauna sa kanila, mas dapat naming pagbutihin ang trabaho namin ngayon and I'm so glad our new show, 'The Last Prince', is rating very well on primetime. Hindi kami bumababa sa 31-34% in Mega-Manila ratings. The next few weeks will be even more exciting kasi ang daming mangyayari. I regained my looks as Prince Almiro but si Kris Bernal naman as Lara ang pumangit kasi nalipat sa kanya ang curse ni Bianca King as Buwana. I'm able to return to our kingdom, Paladino, but ikukulong naman kami ni Buwana uli."

He's dubbed the Ultimate Hunk but we've noticed he lost weight. "Yes, from I70 lbs. down to to 140 kasi hindi ako nakakapag-work out lately. Halos everyday ang taping namin, then may SOP pa ako kung Sunday and, in between, I record my debut album for Sony and GMA Records. But I intend to go back to the gym soon."

What are the songs in his album? "I can't reveal yet, but it's a combination of originals and revivals. More on acoustic and alternative rock. They want to release it in time for my birthday concert on March 24 at sana nga matapos ko na i-record lahat ng songs by that time."

His rumored real girlfriend Rich Asuncion denied at the presscon of "Panday Kids" that they were ever on. How does he feel about this? "It's true. Wala naman talaga siyang aaminin kahit pa siya pilitin. As of now, si Kris talaga ang closest girl to me, but we still are not committed to each other. Nakakatakot din kasi baka maapektuhan ang work namin kung magiging totoong kami. So mabuti na itong close friends lang muna. But I have no doubt the success of 'The Last Prince' is due to the growing rapport we have with each other. The more we get to know one another better, the easier for us to interact naturally with each other on screen."

TWO REALITY SHOWS ended one week after the other: Pinoy Big Brother Double Up on ABS-CBN and Starstruck V on GMA-7. In PBB, two "promdis" won. Melai from GenSan and Jason from Mindoro who looks and sounds like a real country bumpkin. In Starstruck, two half-breeds who are both balikbayans are the winners. Sarah Lahbati, 5'8" at 16, has a Filipina mom from Cavite and a Moroccan dad. They're based in Switzerland. Steven Silva has a mom who's half-Pinay, half-Chinese, and a Portuguese dad. They are based in Sacramento, California. They start their showbiz careers simultaneously. Melai and Jason now have their "Melason" love story being serialized daily at 10 AM on ABS. Sarah and Steven will also be assigned their own shows soon. Let's see whose caeers will really flourish in the next year or so, what with fans so fickle-minded these days and stars have very ephemeral shelf lives.

KRIS AQUINO figured in a freak accident while having a shower. She narrated in her Twitter account that she was scrubbing her legs when she slipped and bumped her head on the wall. She felt dizzy and consulted a doctor who told her she had a cerebral and inner ear concussion due to what happened. Her blood pressure also shot up to 180/100 and she was told to rest for three days confined at the Makati Medical Center where she was given ECG for her heart and EEG for her brain. This is the reason why she was absent from her shows for a couple of days, including "The Buzz".

BAYANI AGBAYANI has three new shows on GMA-7. "First Time", seen Mondays to Fridays at 6 PM before "24 Oras", and "SRO Presents Meet the Fathers", Thursdays at 10 PM, are both rating very well. But one new show is still struggling, "Diz Iz It", seen Monday to Friday at 10:30 AM before 'Eat Bulaga'.

"Grabe ang lakas ng 'First Time'," he says. "Puro magagaling kasi ang teeners na kasama namin, sina Joshua Dionisio, Barbie Forteza and Jake Vargas. At ang dami na nilang fans. Magagalang sila sa mga kasama nilang senior actors at ang acting nila, very natural kaya nakakatuwa. Sa 'Meet the Fathers' naman, thankful akong nakasama ko ang isang respetadong actor like Christopher de Leon. Magkaiba ang fields namin dahil sa drama siya at sa comedy ako, pero dito, he proves na he can also do great comedy."

What can he say about 'Diz Iz It'? "Bago pa lang kami. Way ahead na sa'min ang katapat namin ('It's Showtime') so hindi mo naman basta agad matatalo ito. Basta ako, ang iniisip ko, hindi yung rivalry namin kundi yung makapagpasaya kami ng mas maraming tao."

Some folks say they just imitated the format of their rival show. "Wala nang original sa TV ngayon. Ang format na yan, nagsimula dito sa 'Talentadong Pinoy' ng TV5, na galing din sa 'Britain's Got Talent' and other reality shows. Siempre, kung ano ang uso, ginagawa ng lahat, so walang karapatan ang kahit sino na magsabing kinokopya lang ang show nila. Basta kami, we're trying our best na maging mas maganda at masaya ang 'Diz It It' para mas masiyahan din ang viewers sa panonood nito."

Aside from his three shows, Bayani will also be part of Michael V's new sitcom, "Pepito Manaloto", that will replace "Bitoy's Showtime" that didn't rate so well compared to "Bitoy's Funniest Videos" before.

GELLI DE BELEN says she's still adjusting with the loss of "Sis". "Nasanay kasi ko waking up early to report sa studio," she says. "But now, my mornings are free and I can even take my two sons to school. But siempre, I miss 'Sis' kasi eight years din tumakbo yun, no?"

She's now seen on primetime in GMA-7's new telefantasya, "Panday Kids". "I play the abusive mom of Buboy Villar. Yes, salbahe po ako rito dahil sinasaktan ko ang anak ko. Impressed ako kay Buboy. Ngayon ko lang siya nakatrabaho and he's really a gifted child actor. He's so focused and dedicated sa trabaho, grabe. You can see na he really loves what he's doing."

Since she plays a bad mom who maltreats her own son in "Panday Kids", will she let her own sons watch the show? "Why not? They know their dad (Ariel Rivera) and I, mga artista. Kahit bad characters kami, they know it's just a role we're playing. Minsan nga, while I was reading the script of 'Panday Kids', nakibasa ang eldest ko, si Joaqui, and he realized masama ako. Sabi niya, Mommy, you're bad here. Actually, nanibago sila nang umarte na ako ulit in 'All My Life' kasi nasanay silang host lang ako. E, ngayon, kontrabida na ko kay Buboy. Challenging yung role, ha. Bukod dito, kasama ko rin yung dalawa pang bata in 'Panday Kids' na sina Julian Trono at Sabrina Man in an infotainment show about animals, 'Zooperstars'."

AS WE predicted, Sarah Lahbati wins as the Ultimate Female Survivor in "Starstruck V" with a score of 94.6%. In the case of the females, height rules as both Sarah and First Princess Diva Montelaba are tall and they look more like statuesque beauty queens on stage. The Ultimate Male Survivor is Steven Silva (93.5%)and we're sorry to say that he and Sarah can't be paired as a love team as they have no chemistry. In her heels, Sarah is even taller than Steven. First Prince is Enzo Pineda and Second Prince is Rocco Nacino.

Kudos to Rommel Gacho for cooking up the dazzling finals night. The opening number started with a song from the five hosts for the night: Raymond Gutierrez, Dennis Trillo, Carla Abellana, Dingdong Dantes and Nancy Castiliogne. Then past winners and finalists joined them on stage, including Jennylyn Mercado, Mark Herras, Mike Tan, Aljur Abrenica, Kris Bernal, Yasmien Kurdi, LJ Reyes, Dion Ignacio, Chariz Solomon, Paolo Avelino, Prince Stefan, and others. Then came the five finalists along with the Avengers, contestants who've been eliminated. The Avengers re-created the sequence of their eliminations with the help of their various mentors in acting, dancing, music, etc. like Gina Alajar, Jai Sabas, Barbie Chan, Abbygale Arenas and Douglas Nierras, who also did song numbers with them to the tune of songs like "Poker Face", "Paparazzi", "Nobody But You", etc. It's truly a riotous and rousing production number.

The five finalists then did solo numbers. Four of them did song and dance acts that seem to have been lipsynched. Only one didn't do an upbeat number but it's obvious she's singing live, Sarah, and she showed she's a real singer. Diva and Sarah then did a number with past female winners: Jennylyn, Kris Bernal, Ryza Cenon and Jewel Mische. Conspicuously absent was Starstruck 3 winner Jackie Rice, who chose to attend the birthday of a relative after all the breaks GMA-7 is giving her lately. Enzo, Steven and Rocco sang with Aljur, Mike, Mark, and Mart Escudero. Mike stands out among them on stage so we're wondering why his career is languishing.

Special awards were given to the Avengers. Nina Kodaka - Still Standing Strong Award. Rox Montealegre - Breakthrough Dance Performance Award. Rye Burgos - Fighting Spirit Award. Fianca Cruz - Reyna ng Runway. Zeryl Lim - Vavavoom Award. Sef Cadayona - May Ibubuga Pa Award. The Warrior Princess - Princess Snell. Ian Batherson - Staying Alive Award. Piero Vergara - Future Hitmaker Award.

This is a good batch and we have no doubt that runners up Diva, Enzo and Rocco will no doubt make it on their own. Some of the Avengers are so promising that GMA should give them good breaks soon, notably Piero, Ian, Rye, Rox, Princess and the very charming Nina who has such a winning presence. We're sure some of them will be like Cristine Reyes, the first one to be eliminated in Starstruck 1 but who's now a bigger star than some of the winners.

CLINT EASTWOOD's latest Oscar entry, "Invictus", is based on the book "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation" by John Carlin, the true story of South Africa's miraculous triumph over New Zealand in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Nelson Mandela languished in prison for 27 years. After gaining his freedom, he returned to politics and won in 1994 as the first black president of a country that has been divided for years by apartheid or racial segregation. Mandela's philosophy revolves on forgiveness, kindness and reconciliation. How he copes with the challenge to reunite his country's black and white denizens without fostering animosity from either group is beautifully depicted in the movie.

The title "Invictus" is the Latin word for "unconquerable" and is also the title of a poem written in 1875 by British poet William Ernest Henley. After he won the election, the question asked about Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is: "He can win an election, but can he run a country?" If he's not careful, South Africa may just be plunged into civil war. But Mandela practices his policy of magnanimity right on his first day as president. He asks white staffers to stay on and serve him. The leader of his security men was shocked when Mandela asks him and his men to work side by side with white bodyguards who used to terrorize black people. Eventually, they realize the significance of having members of both races working at the office of the president.

The white bodyguards are amazed at how hardworking Mandela is. He's also personally interested in their personal lives and always shows his appreciation of their work. His chief of staff, Brenda (Adjoa Andoh), wants him to focus on political affairs, but when he learns that the sports commission aims to junk the national rugby team called Springbok, composed mainly of white players, he delivers a meaningful speech saying that if they would do this, they will only widen the gap between whites and blacks and this will begin a new cycle of hatred in each race. He says he wants to develop a "rainbow nation" of various colors.

The Springbok team captain is Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) and he's not happy that his team loses regularly. He gets surprised when he's invited to tea by the president. Mandela tells the non-political athlete it's important to inspire people in building up their nation. He lifts up Pineaar's aspirations to see that it's possible for their team to turn around and win the World Cup. To inspire him more, Mandela tells him about his favorite poem, "Invictus", which he relied upon while in jail.

As the story of an underachieving team that surmounts all odds, "Invictus" is meant to be a crowd pleaser. At first, it looks like that the team has very slim chances of winning. The black population also do not totally sympathize with the white rugby players. But eventually, the entire nation stands behind the Springbok and cheers the players on. The film has the usual cliche techniques in underdog sports flicks but Eastwood as a director tries to tone them down to make the team's journey to victory quite credible. As the movie gets to its rousing finale, it's not possible for the viewer notto be carried away by the stirring action on screen.

Morgan Freeman should be given the lion's share of credit for his masterful portrayal of Nelson Mandela, a courteuos and charismatic leader who can transform people with the power of forgiveness. This is not a biopic on Mandela as it just focuses on a particular episode of his early presidency. But if ever they'd consider to do such a filmbio, then Freeman would surely be the primary consideration. A buffed and blonde Matt Damon also does well as Pineaar but somehow, we feel that the scenes between him and Freeman lack power and poignancy when it's these meetings that are supposed to have inspired Pineaar as team captain to encourage all his players to do their best for the country.

The film ends quoting the most famous lines of the poem, "Invictus": "I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul." We used to say that all the time when we were younger. But now, we know it's only half true. In the end, it's the Lord who's still in control and everything is grace.

RICHARD GUTIERREZ and Heart Evangelista had their last taping day for "Full House" last Friday. The show will end this week. "Maraming fans ang nagre-request na i-extend pa sana ito," says Chard. "Pero hanggang doon na lang talaga ang story at bawal din sa contract with the Koreans na may extension. Sa final week, my character Justin announces that he's retiring from showbiz. He reconciles with his father, Ronaldo Valdez, but still can't find it in his heart to tell Heart that he loves her. Sa ending, babalik ang story sa sequences that we shot in Prague at the Czech Republic shown at the start of the series. Magandang-maganda ito so don't miss it.

Nandito yung mahabang kissing scene namin na umikot ang camera ng 360 degrees, set in one of the most beautiful spots in Prague. 'Full House' will always be memorable for me as working on its set is so cheerful, walang stress kaya very refreshing talaga."

His mom Annabelle Rama says Chard is such a good-hearted person. "Ang daming nag-advise sa kanyang ituloy ang demanda para makakulekta siya ng damages as he has a good chance of winning but he made true his promise na mag-apologize lang ang PEP, di na niya itutuloy," says Annabelle. "Hindi talaga mukhang pera ang anak ko. Hindi nagmana sa'kin. Gusto lang niya talagang ma-clear ang name niya. Ayan nga, maga-attend na kami sa anniversary party ng Yes Magazine ni Jo-ann Maglipon to show na forgive and forget na siya."

RICH ASUNCION says at the presscon of "Panday Kids" that the rumor linking her to Aljur Abrenica is not true. "Hindi naging kami," she says. "Wala kaming naging relasyon kaya hindi rin totoo ang balitang inutusan ako ng GMA na lumayo sa kanya kasi makakasira ako sa love team nila ni Kris Bernal. Ang feeling ko nga, nagagamit ako sa pag-angat ng love team nila. Ayokong makisabit sa pangalan ng iba. Gusto ko nga magkaroon na ako ng boyfriend para matigil na ang tsismis sa amin kasi nagmumukha akong kontrabida sa love team nila."

How come it's said she's not on speaking terms with Kris Bernal? "That's not true. Hindi kami close, but nagbebeso kami when we see each other. Wala kaming gap like what they say. I'm happy for the success ng love team nila ni Aljur at malayo na ang narating nila."

Doesn't it cross her mind that she could have been Aljur's ka-love team? "No, may sarili akong career. I'm happy nga na I play a good role in 'Panday Kids' as Fatima, the older sister of Julian Trono who's one of the Panday Kids. Muslim kami rito so I have to act and behave well like a real Muslim."

JUST BECAUSE Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera travelled together to Europe to visit Marian's dad, some writers concluded that they probably had a secret wedding while they were there. When Dingdong said this is not so, they insisted: "Siguro, namanhikan na sa daddy ni Marian doon."

Dingdong wants to make it clear no wedding or pamanhikan ever happened in Spain. "A wedding is an important event in one's life. So bakit doon namin gagawin if ever, gayong narito lahat ng relatives and close friends namin? Siempre, mas gusto namin dito sa bansa natin. Our main goal is to see Marian's dad who she hasn't seen for six years so from the airport, we went straight to the restaurant owned by her dad," he says. "Okay ang naging first meeting namin. I thought there might be a language problem but it turned out he speaks Tagalog quite well so naging masaya at maayos ang lahat. He's an outgoing person, down to earth kaya hindi mahirap pakibagayan. Sa kanya pala namana ni Marian yung jolly personality niya. Noong Valentine's Day, tatlo kaming nag-celebrate as her dad was with us for dinner."

SOMEHOW, we pity movie stars as they're often put between the devil and the deep blue sea. They just can't please writers who interview them. Some reporters felt sore when Iza Calzado refused to answer their queries about how she spent Valentine's Day with her boyfriend Atticus King. "Sa amin na lang yun," she said at the presscon of "Panday Kids". "Tahimik lang ang date namin, simple lang."

One columnist later wrote: "Para date lang nila, pinagkakait pa."

When Regine Velasquez was asked at SOP how she'd spend Valentine with Ogie Alcasid, she said something like "Siguro magse-sex na lang kami mamayang gabi." Again, some writers were displeased by Regine's funny but candid answer. "Napakawalang taste naman ni Regine," wrote one writer. "Pati pagse-sex nila ni Ogie, binabalita pa."

WHAT CAN BERNARD Palanca say about the recent marriage of ex-GF Rica Peralejo to a pastor, Joseph Bonifacio? "Congratulations to her and her husband. I wish them all the best," he says at the presscon of "Panday Kids". "When I got married din naman, that was her wish for me."

As we all know, his marriage to Meryll Soriano didn't last long, but it produced a baby boy, Elijah. Their relationship ended badly. How are they now? "Better, we're slowly becoming good friends, for the sake of Elijah. No more ill feelings."
What can he say now that Meryll is on with Joem Bascon? "Sa akin, kunsaan siya happy, okay lang. I know Joem, he's a good guy. When I visited Elijah once, Joem was there. He's okay."

He himself would now rather remain unattached than get hitched again. In GMA-7's new telefantasya, "Panday Kids" that starts airing tonight replacing "Darna", he plays the father of new child star Sabrina Man. "But it doesn't mean I'm closing my doors on ABS dahil dun ako nagsimula. I have more job opportunities as freelancer at kunsaan may trabaho doon ako. When I'm off cam, I'm also busy with my work as events organizer commissioned by different companies. I really want to do something different from acting."

MOTHER LILY hosted lunch for Sen. Lito Lapid. "Lito's life is very inspiring," she says. "The youngest in a brood of five boys, his dad died at 28 when Lito was only 2. His mom worked as labandera and Lito helped by selling pandesal and ice on the streets. Growing up, he did all sorts of jobs. To send his brother Arthur to school, he worked in a sari-sari store earning only P20 a month. I personally admire his determination to struggle and give his mom and brothers a better life. Talagang nagsikap siya with hard work. From Pampanga, he came to Manila at 15 to be a stuntman for SOS Daredevils, later doubling for stars like Romeo Vasquez, Tony Ferrer, Zaldy Zshornack and others. My husband Father Remy and I love Lito kasi may puso at damdamin siya for the poor. He's a self made man who now helps others in need."

Director Maning Borlaza, Lito's longtime friend, says: "I recommended Lito to be launched to stardom in 'Hatulan si Dodong Diamond', but hindi siya nakuha. It turned out to be a blessing kasi hindi siya sisikat dun. When he did his uncle's biopic in 'The Jess Lapid Story', produced by Jesse Chua of Mirick Films, doon siya sumikat nang husto. And he has remained humble all these years, willing to help industry people na walang trabaho at humihingi ng tulong sa kanya."

At the senate, he authored 398 bills and resolutions, with 47 resolutions adopted by the Senate and 28 bills he authored and co-authred enacted into law, including the Tourism Act of 2009, Filipino World War II veterans pensions and benefits act, real estate service act, and many more. How does he feel when folks say he is so quiet at the Senate? "I might be quiet but it doesn't mean I'm not working. Tingnan nyo ibang senador, kailan lang, nag-away-away sila. Sabi ko nga, mga abogado yan, bakit ganyan umasta? Nawalan ng dignidad ang senado dahil sa ginawa nila. Sila ang nawalan ng kredibilidad. Ako, I believe, no talk, no mistake."

IZA CALZADO is so thankful that right after "Kaya Kong Abutin ang Langit", she has a new show right away, "Panday Kids", where she plays the role of Maria Makiling. "And remember, kasali rin ako sa 'Panday' movie na naging number one sa recent filmfest kaya I feel so blessed and honored na kasama rin ako ngayon dito sa 'Panday Kids' doing the same role," she says. "But here in 'Panday Kids', which starts airing tomorrow, I have the chance to show my powers as protector of Mother Nature na hindi napakita in the movie where the only thing established is gusto akong pakasalan ni Lizardo. It's not mentioned that he wants to marry kasi gusto rin niyang makuha ang powers ko as an engkantada para mas maging makapangyarihan siya."

As a judge in Starstruck V, she'll be in the finals at Araneta Coliseum tonight. "I'm as excited as the five finalists as I saw how they all grew and improved as performers. Of course, I have my favorites kung sino ang dapat manalo, but I'm not at liberty to reveal them. Let's just say they all work so hard so they all deserve to be among the five remaining survivors, kaya good luck na lang sa kanilang lahat."

Don't miss the final showdown tonight as hosted by Raymond Gutierrez, Dennis Trillo and Carla Abellana, with Marian Rivera, Nancy Jane Castiliogne, Jay-R and Kyla as special guests.

TONIGHT IS the moment of truth for the 5 Starstruck finalists. Rocco Nacino says he's aware that people say he's arrogant and over-confident. "But it's not true," he says. "I always do my best but, let's face it, Steven Silva has the most text votes and Enzo also has a huge fan base, so anything can happen. I think they misunderstand my being frank about my views like when I told Rox Montealegre I don't like her, but I don't want to be plastic kaya naging totoo lang ako with what I feel. Pero ang dating, maangas daw ako. Baguhan lang ako sa showbiz, but I'm learning dahil ayokong masabihing mayabang ako."

About Enzo, the allegation is that he comes from a rich family so they have much money to spend on text votes.

"Siguro nakita namin nila ang results ng text votes," he says. "I wasn't the one who got the most number of votes but Steven, then Diva. So kung totoong we're using our money to make me win, di sana akong number one. Masakit din as people judge me as if it's a sin na may kaya ang parents ko. The truth is ayaw nila kong mag-join dito, but I love performing and it's not just because of fame and fortune. I'm here because it's my passion and I believe in myself and in what I can do. Di man ako ang Ultimate Survivor, I'll still feel blessed na I'm in the Final 5 dahil it helped a lot to improve my personality."

WE'VE ALWAYS been a great fan of Anton Chekhov's plays, "Three Sisters", "The Seagull", "The Cherry Orchard", but we've never seen them staged locally. "Three Sisters" is now being shown at the CPP Little Theater, a Tagalog adaptation of the great Russian play. It may not be perfect, but by all means, see it. All Chekhov's plays are gloomy, with the characters appearing to do nothing but philosophize about life, yearning to be in some other place and waiting for something exciting to happen in their lives. Nowhere is this more palpable than in "Three Sisters".

At the outset, let's say that the local version (transported to Ilocos and set in the 70s during martial law) is superbly acted by the title rolers. It captures the spirit of sadness and longing of the original play but we feel that the angst in Chekhov 's genteel characters is foreign to most Filipinos who won't hesitate to uproot themselves to migrate or work abroad. Maybe they shouldn't have adapted the situations locally anymore and just presented it as still set in Russia two centuries ago.

In the play, most of the action takes place off stage, like a big fire and a duel that kills one of the characters. The major action actually happens as internal conflicts within the characters. To convey this, Director Loy Arcenas should have made his staging more stylized than it already is. But he's lucky to have actresses that make their characters come so effectively alive on stage. The play's most colorful character is Masha, who now becomes Maria Josefina, with the irrepressible Mailes Kanapi (we love her in "Mangatyanan" and "Heavenly Touch") stealing all her scenes as the epitome of bored existence. Her sense of frustration with her life (despite having a loyal husband) is written all over her, her portrayal swinging from hilarious (her comic timing is perfect) to genuinely tragic. Stanislavsky will be pleased.

Dolly Gutierrez is also terrific as the eldest sister, an oldmaid schoolteacher who's always having a headache or too tired, incapable of doing anything to stop their family's slow disintegration. Angeli Bayani is equally memorable as the youngest sister: hopeful at the start and always dreaming of going to Manila, dejected in the end as she accepts her lot of never being able to escape the confines of their rustic existence. Another scene-stealer is Che Ramos as Erlinda, the Visayan sister in law who slowly intrudes in the lives of the sisters and drives them out of their house. But we're afraid the male thespians are not as impressive as the females. For one, Mario O'Hara gives an over-the-top performance as the nihilistic doctor who was once married to their mom (Ivan Chebutikin in the original play) and is now quite content reading the newspaper. Dennis Marasigan is also not that sympathetic as the cuckolded husband and fails to register the pitiable sense of loss that should permeate all the characters.

THE FILM DEVELOPMENT Council is conducting a historical scriptwriting contest open to Filipinos all over the world in line with the year 2011 being a marker for several important events in Philippine history, such as our National Hero Jose P. Rizal's 150th birthday, the country's 65th year of independence from America, and the People Power Revolution's 25th anniversary. Its aim is to promote the development and growth of the Philippine film industry as a medium to uplift aesthetic, cultural and social values for a better understanding and appreciation of the Filipino identity. The contest's theme is historical non-fiction, and scripts should delve into the lives of unsung heroes of Philippine history. Should the scriptwriter prefer to concentrate on the stories of already known characters, he should be able to present facts that do not appear in textbooks. Deadline of submission of entries is March 20, 2010, and contest winners will be announced on Independence Day of this year. For details, contact Abi Portillo at fdcphil@yahoo.com.

WHEN THE total of votes from viewers were tallied in Starstruck V, it revealed that the finalist who got the biggest number of text votes is Steven Silva. Honestly, we ourselves feel that Steven doesn't have a bright future in local showbiz since he can hardly speak Tagalog, he's bowlegged and, although he looks good, he is not movie star handsome. In the challenges given to them, he's frequently the tailender or kulelat because he looks like he lacks energy, just like Nina Kodaka. But obviously, at this time when Koreanovelas and Chinovelas are hits locally, many local fans go for Steven's squint-eyed looks. Born in California 22 years ago and of Filipino-Chinese and Portugese descent, he really looks Chinese on screen. He's taking up culinary arts in San Francisco when he came home last July to do his on-the-job training at Marco Polo Hotel in Davao, where his mom comes from. "An aunt told me to audition in Starstruck and I gave it try," he says. "Luckily, I made it.

My parents are now both happy that I made it to the top five. I love to sing and dance and even if I don't win, I'd still try to give showbiz a try. If I don't succeed, then I can go back to being a chef. I really want to thank all the fans who support me. Without them, I wouldn't make it here kasi nga when I first got here, I didn't speak a word of Tagalog."

Will Steven be the Ultimate Male Survivor? Find out tomorrow as "Starstruck V" airs live direct from the Big Dome.

THE CREATOR OF "Panday", Carlo J. Caparas, came to the presscon of "Panday Kids", along with beauteous wife Marian Patalinjug aka Donna Villa and their eldest son CJ. Carlo is elated that after Bong Revilla's big screen version of "Panday" became the filmfest topgrosser, here now comes "Panday Kids" to carry the torch of the Panday series that he started. "Natutuwa akong maging bahagi ng nakababatang henerasyon at, sana, ang legacy na ipinamana sa akin ni Fernando Poe, Jr. ay pagyamanin natin ng sabay-sabay sa patuloy na pagbahagi sa younger viewers ng alamat ng Panday," he says.

Carlo and Donna told us that they've started taping their own show, "Kroko", about a killer crocodile that's also a hit komiks novel of Carlo J. "For the giant alligator, nagpagawa kami ng dalawang mechanical na buwaya sa States," says Donna. "Kapag nakita mo, matatakot ka talaga. Ang lalaki ng pangil."

Their kids CJ and Peach play important roles in the show directed by Toto Natividad. "CJ plays a crocodile hunter at si Peach naman, TV journalist. Ako may gustong mag-artista sila, but they themselves, ambivalent pa. Kasama nila sa cast sina Stef Prescott, Vaness del Moral, Chari Pineda, Jana Roxas, Andrew Schimmer at marami pang iba. Hindi pa namin alam kung saan channel ito ipapalabas but I'll let you know."

AFTER PLAYING supporting roles in "Babaeng Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang" and "Kung Aagawin Mo ang Lahat sa Akin", Jackie Rice is now the leading lady of JC de Vera in "Panday Kids" that starts airing on Monday after "24 Oras". She even has a kissing scene with him. "First time to do that on cam," she says. "And I'm glad it's with JC kasi siya ang nagdala sa eksena and he took good care of me kasi alam niya di ako sanay sa ganung eksena."

JC says he's loveless at the moment. What if he'd court her? "Naku, may chance siya kasi I like him. Ang guwapo, ang ganda pa ng katawan puro muscle. Pati kulay niya, kayumanggi, type ko."

She sounds like she'll go crazy again like when she fell in love with Biboy Ramirez. "Ay, hindi na po ako mababaliw uli sa pag-ibig, lalo ngayong tuloy-tuloy na ang trabaho ko sa GMA and up to 2012 ang contract ko with them. Inspiration lang. Pero kahit walang boyfriend, mabubuhay ako at ayoko ng maging baliw uli. I've learned my lesson."

What can she say about predictions she might top the FHM poll on sexiest women and she'll depose Cristine Reyes? "Sana nga. Wala namang negative reaction sa FHM pictorial call. They all say class ang dating. Pero ayokong pag-awayin kami ni Cristine. Basta kung anong kaya niyang gawin, magagawa ko rin. Pero as of now, wholesome muna ko sa 'Panday Kids', mga bata ang manonood nito, e. I play an engkanto, si Sarah, na iibig kay JC as Aureus. May action scenes din ako rito sa paglaban namin sa mga kampon ni Lizardo played by Marvin Agustin. Hindi po ako magse-sexy poses dito."

Does Sarah feel she's the choice of most people? "No, kabado pa rin po," she says. "It's unpredictable kaya ginagalingan ko na lang lahat ng pagawa sa'kin. I can excel in singing and acting, but when it comes to dancing, I admit talo ako ni Diva. This week, puro dancing ang gagawin ko to show I can also do it."

At 16, Sarah has yet to have a boyfriend. Even if she's beautiful, she has no suitors. "Siguro, takot sila sa height ko. People keep saying tatangkad pa ko. Ayoko na. At 5'8" nga, intimidated na sila, what more kung taller pa."

Who would she choose as male winner? "Sana, si Enzo. Kasi 6 footer siya. I'm taller than Rocco at kapag naka-heels ako, I'm also taller than Steven kaya di kami puedeng gawing love team."

This Sunday, fans of each finalists can show their support by wearing the color of their idol: yellow for Sarah, blue for Enzo, orange for Diva, purple for Rocco and green for Steven. Free tickets for the Big Dome finals are now being given away at GMA Network and this 5 PM at Ali Mall after the motorcade of the 5 finalists around Araneta Center.

THIS SUNDAY is Judgment Day for the Final 5 Survivors of GMA-7's artista search, "Starstruck V". Who will be the two Ultimate Survivors among Sarah Lahbati, Diva Montelaba, Enzo Pineda, Rocco Nacino and Steven Silva? GMA-7 hosted a dinner for them and they all performed musical numbers for the press. Most people think it's Sarah and Enzo who'd win as they have height, good looks and talent combined. But of course, it'll also depend on text votes, like what Rocco said, the chinky eyed Steven might just spring a surprise since he is the highest pointer among them when it comes to votes from fans who like Chinese or Korean type of stars. Steven is also bow legged when he walks and those who love the "sakangs" will also vote for him. In which case, he will be the next CJ Muere and Gian Carlos, first runners up to the Mike Tan and the late Marky Cielo who never got to sustain their showbiz careers.
