RITA DANIELA and Ken Chan comprise what we may call the unexpected love team. “Last year, when ‘My Special Tatay’ was launched, supporting lang ako and I came to sing the theme song,” Rita recalls. “Now, a year later, heto at kami na ni Ken ang magkapareha as leads in ‘One of the Baes’. Ang galing talaga ni Lord. In one year, nag-turn around ang career ko.”
Ken was supposed to be paired with Arra San Agustin in “My Special Tatay”, but viewers found his relationship as Boyet with the pokpok Aubrey more endearing and they end up being a breakthrough love team called BoBrey. They’ve since recorded a hit song and they’re now also together as journey hosts in “The Clash Season 2” who present the back stories of the contestants.
From being in the afternoon slot, their new show, “One of the Baes”, is now also on primetime to start airing on Monday, September 30, replacing “The Better Woman”. How would they explain the success of their unexpected love team?
“I think people enjoyed seeing us both doing very passionate on screen,” says Rita. “We just love what we do and we are just natural on screen, what you see is what you get, nothing put on. We never really expected that viewers would love our tandem that much and it must be destiny.”
What does she find endearing in Ken? “He’s very talented as an actor and so dedicated to his craft so it’s enjoyable to work with him. At hindi siya maramot. He cares for everyone on the set, his co-actors and even the crew.”
As a journey host in “The Clash”, she aims to give valuable advice to the contestants. “I’m a product of a singing contest myself, Popstars, so I know how it feels to be part of such a competition. My first advice is to always believe in yourself, which is a must for you to achieve your goals.”
In “One of the Baes”, Rita plays Jowalyn Biglang Dapa with Roderick Paulate as her dad. Her dream is to be the captain of a cruise ship so she avoids romance. Also in the cast are Amy Austria as her long lost mom, Melanie Marquez, Tonton Gutierrez, Jestoni Alarcon, Maureen Larrazabal, Edgar Allan Guzman, Rodjun Cruz, Joyce Ching, Archie Alemania, Buboy Villa, James Teng and Kenneth Medrano.
At the presscon, Rita is asked about the story that she and Ken were snubbed by Alex Gonzaga when they bumped into each other by chance at the airport. “Sana po, huwag na lang nating palakihin ang issue kasi honestly, it’s not a big deal para sa’min ni Ken.
"Tapos na yun, nag-usap na kami ni Alex at okay na kami. Ken and I understand, bilang artista, na baka pagod siya, may pinagdaraanan siya, but all is well na, so okay na, tama na po.”
