Multi-Awarded Young Actress Therese Malvar Started As A Child Actress But Now Celebrates Her Debut And Plays Contravida To Kyline Alcantara In 'Inagaw Na Bituin'

THERESE MALVAR will have her debut this Saturday. At her young age, she’s already one of our country’s most awarded actresses. She first bagged the best actress award in the CineFilipino Filmfest playing the title role in “Huling Chacha ni Anita” in 2013. This was followed by the best actress award she won in the Moscow International Filmfest and the Rising Star of Asia Award in the 15th New York Asian Filmfest for her role as a remorseless streetkid in “Hamog” 2015.

This year, she won the Eddy best supporting actress award for her role as an evil water nymph in “Ilawod” and also the Cinemalaya best supporting actress award for two entries, as the bitter eldest daughter in “Distance” and as the foul-mouthed street smart teener who resorts to prostitution in “School Service”. Recently, she represented “Distance” in the still ongoing Tokyo International Filmfest where her film was entered in the non-competition category. “Yung two awards ko in Cinemalaya really made me feel so humbled,” she says. “Kasi I tied with myself at first time daw na nangyari yun. They could not choose definitively daw between my two roles as to which one is better kaya nag-tie na lang ako with myself. I felt na they really appreciated my work.”

After “Legally Blind” where she was Janine Gutierrez’ sister, GMA-7 now gives her a new show where she’ll pit talents against another promising GMA discovery, Kyline Alcantara, in “Inagaw na Bituin”. This early, they’re being built up as the new Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos, with her being the younger version of Nora, considering that she beat Nora then in the Cine Filipino Filmfest with her Anita role. “I don’t know what to say. Para namang mahirap sundan ang yapak ng isang Nora Aunor. Lalo na’t kontrabida kay Kyline are role ko sa show namin. Siya ang nakilalang kontrabida sa ‘Kambal Karibal’, but now, siya na ang bida. Pareho kaming kumakanta in the story at aapihin ko siya, so sabi ko sa kanya, turuan niya ako kung paano ang maging effective na villain.”

In the show, she and Kyline will be rivals over Migo Adecer. “Nakakatuwa kasi I said then na sana, makatrabaho ko rin siya balang araw tapos, biglang eto, di ko ine-expect that I will get to work with him pala right away.”

On November 3, she will have her grant debut at the Sequioa Hotel. “Actually, wala akong plan to have a debut but GMA Artist Center supported me and I really appreciate it. I will have the usual 18 Candles and 18 Stars, hindi na Roses, and I invited most of the people I got to work with, both actors and directors, to be part of it.”

What is the gift she wants to get the most? “I’m not partial to material things, mas gusto ko yung written greetings, letter.” But if she’d be given a material thing, what could it be? “Books siguro. I love books. O siguro, a laptop.”

Who would be her escort at the debut? “Si David Licauco. Tinanong kasi ako ng GMA Artist Center kung sino ang gusto and I said si David kasi crush ko siya. Sineryoso naman ng handler ko at yun, kinuha nga nila si David na pumayag naman.”

So will she have a boyfriend now that she’s 18? “May mga nanligaw pero ni-reject ko. Wala kasi sa mindset ko. Kasi bukod sa work, I’m still trying to finish high school. 11th year na ako sa Marymount Academy and I’m running for honors, so mas priority ko ang work and studies ko.”
