Atlantis Theatrical, The Country's Top Theater Company, Will Stage Two New Great Musicals This Year, 'Side Show' And 'Waitress'

ATLANTIS THEATRICAL remains to be the premiere company in our country when it comes to staging award-winning hit Broadway musicals. After a stellar year that included a repeat run of the Tony Award-winning musical “Fun Home” starring Lea Salonga, the Tony/Olivier/Grammy Award winning musical “Kinky Boots”, and the Olivier Award winning family musical “Matilda”, Atlantis Theatrical has announced that its 2018 Season which will include the first international production of such acclaimed musicals as “Side Show” and “Waitress”.

“Side Show”, with music by Henry Krieger, who composed the award-winning “Dream Girls”, will be shown in September. Based on the true story of conjoined twins and famed entertainers Violet and Daisy Hilton, “Side Show” is a feel god musical about acceptance, love, and embracing one’s uniqueness. As the starring act of a sideshow, helmed by an abusive ringmaster, this is the saga of Violet and Daisy Hilton’s quest for fame, fortune, and potential romance proffered by Terry, a talent scout, and Buddy, a budding musician.

As stars on the Orpheum Circuit, it seems that Violet and Daisy have everything they ever wanted. The one thing they lack, however, is the fulfillment of their hearts’ desires. Different as they are, when it comes to matters of the heart, Daisy and Violet have the same burning questions: “Who could proudly stand beside me? Who will love me as I am?” Nearly entirely sung-through,”Side Show” features soulful music, stunningly beautiful lyrics, and powerhouse show-stoppers, particularly the famous duets “Who Will Love Me as I Am” and “I Will Never Leave You.”

In November, Atlantis closes its season with Sara Bareilles’s hit musical “Waitress” that continues to sell out on Broadway. Making its international debut in Manila with a sparkling new production, this irresistible Broadway hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love Song") and a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam)

This is nspired by the beloved 2007 film, “Waitress” starring Keri Russell, which was written and directed by Adrienne Shelly before she was murdered in real life by a construction worker in her New York apartment. She never saw the movie being a hit and later being transformed into an acclaimed Broadway musical. “Waitress” tells the story of Jenna - a waitress and expert pie maker, who dreams escaping from her small Southern town and a loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.

An uplifting musical, Atlantis’ Artistic Director, Bobby Garcia, is very much energized to direct this and “Side Show”. “I was one of the lucky ones to catch ‘Side Show’ in 1997 with Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner as the conjoined twins and have been in love with the musical ever since. And now here we are bringing the updated 2014 Broadway revival to Manila for the first time ever. Lastly, it is with great pride that we will be marking the international premiere of ‘Waitress’ in the Philippines. It is a beautiful, heartwarming and joyous musical about finding the strength to rebuild your life one pie at a time. We hope you will join us for all our shows.”

Tony Tuviera, Atlantis’ Chairman of the Board, and Dan de Padua, Atlantis’ President say: “We are equally happy to be producing these brand new shows SIDE SHOW and WAITRESS, and to be part of the exciting growth of theater in the Philippines,” de Padua added.

With these musicals lined up for 2018, Manila is all set for another year of exciting musical theatre. For sponsorship and show buying opportunities please contact Atlantis Theatrical at telephone numbers 650-5144 or 0917-838-1534 or email info@atlantistheatrical.com
