Nyoy Volante Excited To Do Repeat Of Hit Musical 'Kinky Boots', This Time With His Own Wife, Mikee Bradshaw

NYOY VOLANTE and wife, theatre actress Mikee Bradshaw, are working together for the first time since they got married in the repeat of the hit West End and Broadway musical, “Kinky Boots”. Due to an insistent demand for more tickets, the show will be shown again at the RCBC Carlos Romulo theatre from March 2 to 18. Mikee will be playing the role of Lauren, who gets to sing the showstopping solo number, “History of Wrong Guys”, played in the original production by Yanna Laurel who’s now busy doing another musical.

So how is it working with each other? “Actually, in the first production, Mikee was the one who did my make up for the show,” says Nyoy. “But now, she can’t do that anymore as she’s part of the cast. She’s a very good actor and she’s a perfect fit for the role of Lauren.”

“I really love working with him,” says Mikee. “We can ask each other for feedback and we’re very critical of each other, but in a good way.”

Mikee has a daughter, Sofie, from a previous relationship, and the 8-year old girl just loves Nyoy in his role as the crossdressing Lola in “Kinky Boots”. “Because of Lola, she now wants to have a gay black brother who can wear high heels like Lola,” says Mikee.

Sofie is also into theater. She first appeared in “Little Princess” and is now in the cast of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” shown at Resort World. “I was hoping she’d be a doctor or a lawyer, who’ll make more money, but I guess it can’t be helped that she’ll also go into acting because we somehow influenced her.”

How will they spend Valentine’s Day? “Naku, that is National Nyoy Volante Day as it’s his busiest time of the year sa dami ng Valentine shows niya here and out of town,” says Mikee. “We’ll just have to wait for ten days before we can go out on a date and that’s on February 24, when we celebrate our second wedding anniversary.”

Aside from Nyoy and Mikee, Laurence Mossman will reprise his role as Charlie Price and Bobby Garcia helms “Kinky Boots”, a musical that carries a great message about acceptance of each other’s differences. Written by Harvey Fierstein, “Kinky Boots” tells the story of Charlie, the son of a shoemaker who reluctantly takes up his father’s factory after his death, and Lola, a drag queen who’s fueled by her passion for shoes.

The duo tries to save the factory from bankruptcy, and they eventually form an uncanny bond between their two worlds. Together they learn what it means to be each other’s friend despite their differences. The story comes alive with pop icon Cyndi Lauper’s songs that sweep everyone off their feet. So will there be a difference in his interpretation of Lola this time?

“Definitely!” says Nyoy. “Kasi yung performance mo evolves for the better. You learn from the first time time you did it. Dapat pala ganito ang ginawa ko noon. So may differences, specially sa nuances. It will be better this time.”
