Director Sigrid Andrea Bernardo Is Right In Rejecting The Idea Of Being Compared To RomCom Hitmaker Cathy Molina

DIRECTOR SIGRID ANDREA BERNARDO is being compared to hitmaker Cathy Garcia-Molina and she’s right in saying they are very different from each other. Sigrid writes her own films solo, making her a real auteur. Cathy sometimes help in the writing of her movies.

Cathy’s work are purely commercial pursuits. She’s the type of filmmaker who will not be afraid to pander and stoop to the level of the masa viewers just to please them, like what she did with the cheap ending of “Seven Sundays”. All her movies have commercial elements that attempt to make the viewers laugh.

Sigrid does not make such concessions. From her first movie, “Huling Cha Cha ni Anita”, that won several awards right away, she just pursues her vision and doesn’t care if viewers would be pleased or not. All the more so for her second movie, the little seen “Lorna” that carries a tour de force performance from Shamaine Buencamino in the title role.

The same goes for “Kita Kita”, an unlikely romance between Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez, and “Mr. and Mrs. Cruz”, which has overextended scenes that just go on and on. We don’t think Sigrid will be able to work well with Star Cinema that would have a creative committee breathing down her neck.

She’ll always want to work with full freedom. So she’s very much correct when she rejected the idea of her following in the footsteps of Cathy Molina. “Sa tingin ko, hindi ako makakasunod sa yapak niya kasi, siya yun e. I can never be a Cathy Molina. Iba yung sa akin.”

Very well said indeed.
