Theatre Actress Yanah Laurel Nearly Lost Her Voice Due To Illness, Now Plays One Of Her Most Demanding Roles Ever In 'Kinky Boots'

YANAH LAUREL started her career on the stage as a child star when she was only 9 years old. The younger sister of Franco Laurel is now one of our most competent theatre talents who’s been nominated twice as best actress in a musical. She wowed audiences with her performances as Lorraine in “Jersey Boys” and as Joan in “Fun Home”.

Early on, she has already realized that acting in theatre is something she wants to do for the rest of her life but a big trial came into her life when she nearly lost her voice due to a disorder in her esophagus and she can’t sing for two years. She cannot eat properly as she’d throw up and lost 50 lbs. A blood vessel in her throat was affected and she had to undergo vocal therapy for seven months.

She now gets to play one of her most demanding characters ever as Lauren, a feisty shoe factory worker in Cyndi Lauper’s Tony award winning Broadway musical, “Kinky Boots”. She is paired with New Zealand-Pinoy actor Laurence Mossman as Charlie. But off cam, she is playing beautiful music with theatre-movie-TV actor Rafa Siguion Reyna, son of Bibeth Orteza and Director Carlos Siguion Reyna. Directed by Bobby Garcia, “Kinky Boots” opens tonight, June 30, at the RCBC Theatre in Makati. It will run until July 23. For tickets, call 891-9999 or visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.
