Award-Winning Scriptwriter Ricky Lee On Why He'd Never Go Into Directing

MUCH RESPECTED scriptwriter Ricky Lee used to work with the group of Malou Santos but he resigned six years ago to concentrate on his novels. He has since published two books, “Para Kay B” and “Si Amapola” and he’s now all set to release new books this year. One is a new novel and the other is a collection of children’s stories for adults. He now helps the unit of Ginny Monteagudo Ocampo and he helped put up “The Greatest Love” as creative consultant.

He has also gone back to writing scripts. He wrote the movies “Iadya Mo Kami” for Director Mel Chionglo, “Sekyu” for Joel Lamangan and “Ringo, The Dog Shooter” for Rahyan Carlos, all of which won awards recently. He’s now writing the script of “Servando Magdamag”, based on his own short story, to be produced and directed by Lav Diaz.

In September, Ricky will be conducting his 15th writing workshop. Most of the writers and directors who are active now are products of his previous acting workshops, including such big names as Jeffrey Jeturian and Bing Lao who are members of the very first batch. Soon, he’ll be writing his new scriptwriting book, “Trip to Quiapo, Part 2”. Doesn’t he have any intentions of directing like other scriptwriters (best example is Jun Lana) did?

“One thing I realized noon pa, hindi ako para diyan. Parang hindi ako mage-enjoy. Kasi madaling maubos ang pasencia ko. Hindi ko kayang magturo sa mga artistang di marunong umarte. Madali akong mai-stress kapag may mga problema sa set. Si Guy nga (Nora Aunor), noon pa ako kinukulit: kailan mo ako ididirek? Kapag nagdirek ka, dapat ako ang una. Kaysa magdirek, ang dami ko pang gustong isulat na libro. What I plan to do is commission projects na ako ang susulat, ako ang pipili ng direktor at mga artista, like what I did before in ‘Himala’. Pero yung ako mismo ang magdidirek, huwag na lang siguro.”
