Unitel Producer Tony Gloria Says Nora Aunor's 'Whistleblower' Is The Most Meaningful Film He Has Ever Produced

TONY GLORIA, top honcho of Unitel, has produced some memorable local films like “Gaano Kita Kamahal” by Butch Perez that gave Christopher de Leon a best actor award for playing the role of a horribly disfigured man, and “Crying Ladies” by Mark Meily where Sharon Cuneta won as best actress for her role as an ex-convict. Now, he has come up with another remarkable film about political corruption, “Whistleblower”, the idea of which, he says, has been with him for five years now.

“Just like ‘Crying Ladies’ which is about three women, itong ‘Whistleblower’ is also about three women whose lives get intertwined in a political thriller,” he says. “Nora Aunor plays the title role as an accountant who knows the secrets of Cherry Pie Picache, a powerbroker who helps corrupt congressmen and senators pocket their own pork barrel through her fake NGO’s. Angelica Panganiban plays the idealistic journalist who helps Nora expose the anomalies she knows about our corrupt government officials. Although political ang tema, I told our writer Rody Vera and director Adolf Alix that it has to be fast paced and entertaining. Dapat one hour and 30 minutes lang. Ayokong nile-lecturan ang viewers. They might associate situations in the movie with actual real life events, pero bahala na sila kung anong makita nila after watching the movie.”

So is he happy with the way the movie turned out? “Oh yes. I’ve seen it many times. It’s a serious film, pero magaan panoorin. I think it’s the most meaningful film that I ever produced. Lahat ng nanood said hindi nila napansin na tapos na pala. We’re very proud of it. It was graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board.”
How about Madonna Tarrayo, the president of Unitel? “First of all, I like to say that it’s an honor to work with Ate Guy. As we all know, she’s a class act and she certainly delivers in ‘Whistleblower’. After I saw the first cut, I gave my comments then they re-edited it and when I saw the final cut, I felt yung certain rush that you feel when you watch a good movie. Na-achieve nila yun. Relatable ang events sa story and all the three actresses are very impressive. The direction, the editing, the sound, it’s all first rate.”
