Eugene Domingo's Role Is More Complicated In 'status: It's Complicated' Than In Her Tokyo Filmfest Award-Winning Film

EUGENE DOMINGO says her role in “Status: It’s Complicated” as a modern sexologist named Marian is indeed even more complicated than her Tokyo filmfest award-winning role in “Barber’s Tales”. “Magkaiba sila pero mas mahirap ang character ko sa ‘Status: It’s Complicated’ as I have to project myself as a very classy, contemporary, liberated and sophisticated woman of today. Hindi madali yun, ha, lalo sa mga nasanay sa’kin sa roles na nagpapatawa ako as Kimmy Dora or Babae sa Septic Tank. In ‘Barber’s Tales’ kasi, drama ang material kaya seryoso ako all throughout, hindi tumatawa bilang asawa ni Daniel Fernando na kung tratuhin niya, parang katulong lang. And yet, nang ako ang magmana sa pagiging barbero niya sa bayan namin, eventually, naging symbol ako of woman empowerment laban sa mga lalaking mapang-api sa kababaihan, led by our mayor Nonie Buencamino. We’re sure many would envy her, just like when they saw her Instagram foto with Richard Gomez kissing her. “Hindi yun eksena sa movie or TV show, ha. Real life yun. Nakita niya ko sa ASAP and he kissed me so kilig na kilig ako. The truth is noon ko pa siya crush. Hindi pa ko artista at si Richard Gomez ang peak noon. So who would have thought? Aabot pa pala ako ngayon, di ba? Ang wish ko now is sana nga, magkasama pa kami sa isang movie dahil we’ve never worked together before. Wishful thinking lang naman.”

Won’t the witty kind of humor of “Status: It’s Complicated” be quite high for “masa” viewers who are used to slapstick “insultuhan” kind of humor? “I don’t think so. Lahat kami rito, parang kating-kati, so I think, lahat, makaka-relate dito kasi lahat naman tayo, one time or another, nakakaramdam ng kati, magpakatotoo lang tayo. We’re just being truthful to the humor of the original movie, ‘Salawahan’, ng late National Artist Ishmael Bernal na siyang inspirasyon nito.”

She’s also thankful that her only TV show at the moment, “Celebrity Bluff” on GMA-7, is celebrating its first anniversary. “Yes, umabot na kami sa Season 4. When we started, tatlo kami nina Jose Manalo at Wally Bayola rito. Sobrang nalungkot kami ni Jose nang mawala si Wally, but heto, we survived it kahit kaming dalawa lang. We’re both hoping and praying for him na sana makabalik pa siya at magkasama kami uling original team. He deserves a second chance dahil very talented naman siya.”
