Why Mother Lily Chose To Remake Ishmael Bernal's 'Salawahan' As 'Status: It's Complicated'

MOTHER LILY MONTEVERDE chose to remake the sophisticated sex-comedy, “Salawahan”, that was directed in 1979 by the late National Artist Ishmael Bernal. Why did she choose it and not other Bernal classics like “Relasyon”, “Broken Marriage” and “Pahiram ng Isang Umaga” (all starring Vilma Santos)?

“I like ‘Salawahan’ as it’s very funny, very witty,” she says. “I think it’s even ahead of its time in its depiction of love, sex and interpersonal relationships.Bernal is really a genius when it comes to films about these topics, so dapat lang i-remake siya for today’s generation.”

And why did she choose Chris Martinez to remake it? “Simply because he’s one of the best young directors we have today. He had done a remake for me before, the late Joey Gosiengfiao’s ‘Temptation Island’. He did it with his own unique touch and it was very successful. Kaya confident din akong magiging very successful din sa box office itong ‘Status: It’s Complicated’. I’ve already seen the movie at magaling talaga si Chris. He also wrote the script. Napaarte niya ang buong cast from Eugene Domingo and Maja Salvador to Solenn Heussaff, Jake Cuenca and Paulo Avelino. Puro sila mahuhusay sa movie, all very effective in portraying their respective roles. Matatawa ka from start to finish, pero may puso yung pelikula kasi you’ll also get lots of meaningful insights about life, about love, about people.”
