Sharon Cuneta Plays A Role She Has Never Played Before In 'Madam Chairman'

SHARON CUNETA is obviously enjoying herself immensely doing her first TV series, “Madam Chairman”, directed by Joel Lamangan and billed as the first barangay serye that starts airing on October 14, Monday to Friday at 7 PM. She’s so pleased when she saw TV5 Pres. Noel Lorenzana and Entertainment Head Wilma Galvante attending its presscon. “Iba ang respeto mo sa leaders nyo when they give you a reason na mahalin sila,” she says.

To which Mr. Lorenzana responded: “I’m so happy na ang una kong naka-close is the Megastar, Sharon Cuneta. Her show is in keeping with what we want to achieve in our programming. It shows the good side of Filipinos na kahit nahihirapan, tumutulong pa rin sa community niya. We’ve seen the first episodes at ang ganda ng show, ang galing ni Megastar.”

Sharon plays Bebeth, a kagawad in Barangay San Isidro whose husband (Jay Manalo) is an OFW. She earns on her own by making kakanin, not knowing her hubby is back from abroad and now lives with his paramour in the next barangay, Beverly (Regine Angeles). She becomes a single mom to their three kids: Antonello (Akihiro Blanco), a problem son; Kakay (Shaira Mae de la Cruz), the kikay daughter; and Junjun (Byron Ortile), who’s sickly but the brainiest of all.

Bebeth’s life becomes complicated when their Barangay Chairman suddenly dies and she becomes the successor, much to the chargrin of Bayani Agbayani, the son in law of the dead chairman who wants the position for himself so he becomes Sharon’s rival. Also in the cast are Ciara Sotto as Jingle, Sharon’s best friend who talks so slowly ala-Kuya Cesar; and Malou de Guzman, Manny Castaneda and Glenda Kennedy as her Tres Kumares, barangay kagawads who give her advice about barangay issues; Tony Mabesa as their priest, Jim Pebanco as their mayor, plus Fanny Serrano, Nanette Inventor, Gillette Sandico, Bearwin Meily, Patani, Toby Alejar, Mavy Lozano, Adrian Sebastian, Clint Gabo and the third son of Sharon’s Kuya Chet, Chris Cuneta, 19, introduced as Shaira Mae’s love interest.

Direk Joel Lamangan says Sharon will surprise viewers in this show. “She has proven herself in drama, but this time, she’ll show what a good comedian she is,” he adds.

“I believe in the show at kapag dinidibdib mo ito, it shows on the screen,” says Sharon. “You’ve never seen me like this and I’m so happy that I did it with TV5. My funny side is shown on TV and I’m blessed to have a good director like Direk Joel and good co-stars.”

How did she prepare for her role? “First, I had an immersion in a real barangay and the chairman was kind enough to show us how they do their meetings, yung mga problemang dinadala sa kanila, and I learned so much. But basically as Bebeth, I didn’t have to prepare much kasi kilala naman ako as masayahing tao and this is my chance to be hilarious. Nagluka-lukahan ako, nagtanga-tanghan dito. Noong una, I was scared kasi I know ang taping ng teleseryes, magdamagan, puyatan, sobrang ngarag ka, but I’m so lucky ang director ko, pareho kaming Cinderella. I’m really happy that si Direk Joel ang director ko for my first teleserye kasi before midnight, tapos na kami ng taping. He has a magnificently efficient team with Joey Reyes as our headwriter. Kung iba siguro mga nakasama ko, I would’ve been traumatized. We’re so happy making this show and I hope our happiness will translate into the audience para maraming manood. I guarantee na kapag pinanood nila ang first episode pa lang, they’ll be hooked.”

Sharon is also enjoying doing “The Megastar and The Songwriter” on Sunday nights. “Ogie Alcasid is such a joy to work with at abangan nyo dahil gumaganda ang bawat episode.”

Will she invite daughter KC Concepcion to guest in the show? “I’d really like to. But kung hindi siya papayagan, I will understand.”
