Future National Artist Ryan Cayabyab Holds New Contest For A Capella Singers

RYAN CAYABYAB, future national artist and fondly called Mr. C, has a new project after his successful Philpop Musicfest that had its finals recently. This time his Music School of Ryan Cayabyab is holding a contest for contemporary a cappella ensemble singing. Called Akapela Open, it’s sponsored by PLDT Smart Foundation and One Meralco Foundation. Mr. C says the Akapela Open ensemble singing contest is the first of its kind in the country.

To join, singing groups need to have a minimum three and maximum members of 12 whose ages should be 18 years old and above. Groups may be all male, all female or mixed voices. Pop, R&B, jazz, hiphop, rock, folk and other genres may be performed in original a capella arrangements, with accompanying choreography. All contestants will first be required to send a video of their performance auditions online of about 10 minutes in length.

For for more information, they can log on to the Akapela Open website: akapelaopen.com. Those who will be considered in the shortlist will then be asked to do live performance auditions. The deadline for application and uploading of entries is on September 7, so you have a month to prepare your number. Live auditions for the finalists will be held on October 5 & 6. Once accepted here, an entry fee of P1,000 is required. Semi-finals on October 12 will be held at the Music School of Ryan Cayabyab and the finals on October 30 at Meralco Theatre. Prizes at stake are cash and trophy. Grand prize is P250,000; 1st runner-up, P150,000; 2nd runner-up, P100,000. For best a capella arrangement of a Filipino song, a special award of Php50,000 will be given.

With this, Mr. C aims to promote the love for a capella singing and to foster a community of a capella singers. It’ll be recalled that he pioneered in a capella singing locally with his now classic album “One” that spawned the hit song “Limang Dipang Tao”.
