'My Lady Boss' Movie Review: Entertaining From Beginning To End

HONESTLY, WE want “My Lady Boss” to be a hit as we both personally like Richard Gutierrez and Marian Rivera, two of the warmest and friendliest people we’ve met in showbiz. Chard is happy that Marian won as numero uno in FHM’s list of Sexiest Women. “She deserves it,” he says. “Nakasama ko siya noon as co-host in ‘Extra Challenge’ and she’s really sexy kahit anong isuot niya. Dito sa ‘My Lady Boss’, her sexiness comes out kahit sa scenes na manang na manang ang suot niyang outfits at naka-eye glasses siya as my strict boss.”

We went to the movie’s premiere last Sunday at Megamall and it was packed to the rafters. Marian’s relatives and former classmates came to support, and so did the whole Gutierrez family from Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama to Chard’s Ate Ruffa and male siblings. And they weren’t disappointed. Director Jade Castro once again came up with a very entertaining romantic comedy that really works. There are many kilig scenes as well as laugh out loud scenes.

Richard is perfect as the spoiled rich boy who is forced by his lolo (Ronaldo Valdez) to try working as a lowly employee after the businesses he put up all failed. Marian is also splendid as the “jologs” girl from the Pamantasan ng Quiapo who made it as a terror boss. She comes from a working class family and is the breadwinner for her widowed mom (Sandy Andolong), married brother (Dion Ignacio) and teen brother (Ruru Madrid) who she’s sending to school.

Marian has a boyfriend (Tom Rodriguez, who now has his own legion of fans judging from the screams he got when he first appeared on screen, probably because of the success of “My Husband’s Lover”.) He’s already asking Marian to marry him but her family and her career are her priority so he breaks up with her. As maybe expected, Marian and Richard are slowly drawn to each other, but Marian backs off when she realizes that Richard has serious commitment issues.

Richard and Marian have so many kissing scenes all throughout the movie. We’re wondering what would be Dingdong Dantes’ reaction upon seeing them.

Richard is funny in that scene where he visits Marian at home. He’s quietly sitting in the living room when Marian comes out of her own bedroom not knowing he’s there, then she gives her burdensome family a dressing down and breaks down crying because Tom Rodriguez has just dumped her. Richard was so discomfited by Marian’s getting so emotional and his reactions are really on target.

Marian is very good in her dramatic scenes, but she’s even more effective in her rib tickling scenes, like when she makes threats to Richard. She really let’s her hair down in the “karaoke” scene and she even has a shower scene showing off her backside.

Aside from Tom and Ronaldo, also giving the two leads great support are Rocco Nacino as Marian’s ferocious rival in the office (Rocco shows a fine flair for comedy), Benjie Paras as the scene-stealing janitor and Petra Halimuyak as Marian’s sexy secretary. All in all, it’s very entertaining from beginning to end.
