Gov. Vilma Santos Is The First Guest Of Kara David As New Host Of Gma Channel 11'S 'Powerhouse'

AWARD-WINNING broadcaster and documentarist Kara David (she has 14 international awards no less to her credit) couldn’t believe it when GMA management informed her that she’d be taking over from Mel Tiangco as the host of GMA News TV Channel 11’s “Powerhouse”, which features the houses of influential people and celebrities shown Tuesdays at 8 PM. This is because Mel already has so much work on her plate, what with her daily anchor work in “24 Oras”, hosting “Magpakailanman” on Saturdays and her work as head of GMA’s Kapuso Foundation.

“Tita Mel is my idol, my inspiration, so na-pressure agad ako,” says Kara. “Can I fill into her shoes? Never kong naisip na mamanahin ko ang show niya. Parang ang laki-laking pressure na akong ipapalit sa kanya. Nagkaroon ako ng feelings of insecurity. I called up Tita Mel and binigyan niya ako ng bas bas niya. Sabi niya, huwag ko siyang gagayahin para magkaroon ng sarili kong Kara David touch ang show. Just be myself daw. I told her I’ll try my best to show to do it the way I really am: adventurous, kikay, bungisngis. But I won’t be leaving my other assignments, like doing ‘News to Go’ daily sa GMA News TV, making docus which I’ve been doing for ‘I Witness’ for ten years now, and being a reporter in ’24 Oras’ and ‘Saksi’.”

For her initial show tomorrow night, her first guest is Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos who she interviewed at the Batangas City Hall Mansion. She says she doesn’t really know much about Ate Vi. “I was awed by her being so down to earth, considering she’s an institution not only in local showbiz but also in politics. She’s so warm, accommodating and honest. She shared so many secrets about her life, mula noong paano siya nabaon sa utang when she was producing movies hanggang sa makabangon siyang muli, her struggles as a politician. Maraming malalaman ang viewers about her sa interview ko sa kanya and she’s really the perfect guest for my start as the new host of ‘Powerhouse’.”

Who are the other powerful and influential people she’d like to feature in the show? “Siempre, una, si Pres. Noynoy Aquino, being the most powerful person in the country now. Also our former presidents, Gloria Arroyo and Fidel Ramos.”

What tips did she get from her famous dad, Randy David, who used to host a public affairs show himself? “Always be humble, huwag basta manghuhusga ng tao. Kahit ang kausap mo, yung pinakamaruming tao, respetuhin mo pa rin.”

A single mom, Kara has a 12-year old daughter, Julia, who she takes to school every morning before she reports for work at GMA. She’s turning 40 on September 12 and is the president of Project Malasakit, a foundation that she put up to help the poor and needy people she has featured before in her docus.
