Angeli Bayani Talks About Her Experiences At The Cannes Filmfest Where She Had Two Entries

AT THE PRESSCON of “Lauriana”, a lot of reporters swarmed to interview Angeli Bayani, the only local actress who had two entries at the Cannes International Filmfest last month: “Ilo-Ilo” (made by Singaropean director Anthony Chen, it won best film at Directors Fortnight section for best first feature film) and Lav Diaz’ “Norte: Hangganan ng Kasaysayan”) where she played a prisoner’s wife.

She played a Pinay maid/nanny who befriended her bosses’ child in the family drama, “Ilo-Ilo”. She’s the only Filipino in the cast and the shooting was all done in Singapore. She auditioned for her role here in Manila while playing the role of Sisa in the musical version of “Noli Me Tangere”. Yes, Angeli sings and she sings very well. We also saw her singing in the PETA musical “Caredivas” and she’s really good.

“My experience working on the red carpet in Cannes is something I will never forget,” she says. “There, it’s not only the actors who are given importance but the filmmakers like German director Wim Wenders and French director Agnes Varda. Si Ms. Varda, hinabol-habol ko pa just to tell her I’m a fan of her works.”

She started her acting career on theatre in UP and the CCP where we saw her with the late Mario O’Hara in the Tagalog adaptation of Checkov’s “Three Sisters”. As an indie actress, she has also done films shown abroad, like “Graceland” (acclaimed in New York) and “Slaves of the Sea” (made for a French film company.) In the Cinema One entry, “Ka Oryang”, she did full frontal nudity as a political prisoner tortured by the military and got nominated as best supporting actress. A single mom with a 5-year old son, she works hard to give her child a bright future.

In “Lauriana”, she now plays Bangs Garcia’s best friend and defender from abusive husband Allen Dizon. Filmed on location in Tulay Buhangin in Padre Burgos, Bondoc Peninsula in Quezon Province where they stayed for eight days, she’s happy to be directed by Director Mel Chionglo for the first time. “I’m proud to be part of this movie which is set in the 1950s in a small town,” she adds. “It carries a powerful message about how women should fight for their rights.”
