"Suddenly It'S Magic" Movie Review: Didn'T Have Magic At The Tills

WE ENJOYED watching “Suddenly It’s Magic”. Director Rory Quintos has come up with a well crafted romantic-comedy with so many “kilig” scenes that work. Also an attraction is the beautiful province of Ilocos Norte and its eye-catching locations. A great part of the film was also shot in some scenic places in Thailand.

And we actually like Thai actor Mario Maurer. We can understand why he’s such a popular heartthrob in Thailand as he has such a charming presence and likeable screen persona. He also has good on screen chemistry with Erich Gonzales.

So we feel sad that the movie flopped at the tills, making some writers saying the title should be “Suddenly It’s Tragic”. We heard it was made for more than P40 million but only earned P30 million plus during its short run. We hope it will do better when released in Mario’s home turf so Star Cinema can recover its investment.

But we don’t think they will get another foreign star again to work with them in a local movie in the near future. Maybe they should have learned from Vic Sotto, who also got Thai actress Paula Taylor to get a movie with him some years ago, which also didn’t do well at the box office.

Let’s face it, Mario is not that well known among most local masa viewers. He may have thousands of swooning fans here who saw his Thai flicks that were shown here, but obviously, they’re not enough to fill up our movie theatres nationwide. The same goes for the Korean actors who have their own following here and also the Hollywood stars like Zac Efron, Joe Jonas and Ian Sommerhalder who came to Manila to model for local brands of clothing. They may have many fans here who troop to their mall personal appearances, but still, this is a very limited crowd.
