Vina Morales Tries Her First Stage Role In The Musical 'Rock Of Ages'

‘ROCK OF AGES’, the rock musical whose film version stars Tom Cruise, opens simultaneously in mid-June with the stage version being staged locally by the prestigious theatre company, Atlantis Productions. It features classic rock hits of the 80s from glam metal bands. The story is set in 1987, about an aspiring rocker, Drew, who works as a busboy in a Hollywood club called The Bourbon Room. He falls in love with a country girl from Kansas, Sherrie, who aims to be an actress but ends up as a stripper. Playing Sherrie in the local production is Vina Morales in her first stage musical.

“I had offers even then but I didn’t have the guts,” she says. “Now is the right time kasi I’ve done films, TV, recording, concerts here and abroad, theatre na lang ang hindi pa. The vehicle is also right for me and I’m now loving it. I want to do another play after this, pero mag-iipon muna ko kasi while doing this, I had to turn down a soap and several gigs.”

The play is very taxing as she has several solos, duets and ensemble numbers. Playing her leading man Drew is Nyoy Volante while the rock star Stacee Jaxx is played by Migs Ayesa who did it on Broadway. How’s it working with an international star like Migs? “Very supportive siya sa co-stars niya. Since he has done this in the U.S., he explains to me the scenes we do and gives inputs para mas mapaganda. Everyone in the production is very professional and I’m learning so much from this experience.”
