The Fact That Viewers Love Revenge Stories Makes 'Walang Hanggan' A Hit

VIEWERS JUST love stories of revenge. In the States, one of the hit shows now is “Revenge” starring Emily Van Camp as a young woman who goes to the Hamptons to take revenge on the people who framed up her dad and sent him to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Locally, the hit soap “Walang Hanggan” on ABS-CBN is also about revenge, with Dawn Zulueta and Coco Martin taking revenge on the people who oppressed them, notably Helen Gamboa.

The peg for this was Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”, which has had several film and TV versions before (there’s a new one coming one with the lead character, Heathcliff, now played by a black actor). Even locally, it’s been done before as “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit” and “The Promise”.

The success of “Walang Hanggan” makes Coco’s supporters proclaim him as now the number one actor on ABS-CBN (so where does this place John Lloyd Cruz?) but he’s really lucky ABS-CBN gave him and his new leading lady, Julia Montes, very great support like Susan Roces, Helen, Dawn, Rita Avila and Richard Gomez no less. For the longest time, the basic plot in most local TV soaps is about a mom looking for her missing child. We won’t surprise if revenge stories would now come back with a vengeance.
