LAYANG BILANGGO

Shows how love cures abandonment

The healing power of finding long lost love becomes a story’s core when the emotion-filled family drama Layang Bilanggo opens at the 6th Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival at the Shang Cineplex of the Shangri-la Mall in Edsa from November 10 to 16!

Layang Bilanggo stars Pen Medina, Miriam Quiambao, Jaime Fabregas, Sue Prado, Archie Adamos, Mailes Kanapi with the special participation of Will Devaughn. This is directed by Michael Angelo Dagñalan who co-wrote the screenplay with Melchor DF. Escarcha.

Layang Bilanggo is the story of an assassin who is running away from his tormentors and is now taking refuge in the company of his daughter whom he abandoned several years ago. He submits himself to a nursing home or home for the aged, claiming that he is an ordinary “Palaboy sa kalye,” And because he knows his daughter is employed there, he perceives a chance to get near her. Here’s where Layang Bilanggo becomes a beautifully emotional but different family drama because it does not take place in the usual family home.

Mike Dagñalan is a filmmaker who is arguably a young master on short films and a major of Communication Arts at the University of Santo Tomas. He supplemented his studies at the Mowelfund Institute under European film-maker Gustavo Loza. Finishing a Producer’s Course on “High Quality-Low Budget TV/Film Production prodded him to become a writer-director and is now the present Creative Director of Kuwentista Production – a management company for Film, TV and advertising. In 2009 Dagñalan helmed three short narratives: River of Dreams, the experimental Pagburnayan, and the horror-short Karoler which all landed places in the 21st Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video. River of Dreams grabbed 3rd Place, Pagburnayan and Karoler got in the Official Selection. River of Dreams was also in the Official Selection and 7th Cinemadamare International Film Festival in Italy and bagged the “Winner of the Evening” award. It also went into the Official Selection in the 12th Auburn International Film Festival for Children and Young Adults in Australia. But what actually put Dagñalan to prominence is his full feature Isnats in 2005, which casted and attempted to boost the career of Jourdan Sebastian. Initially, Isnats already was a Palanca Award-winning story in 2002. This neo-realist action-adventure-comedy received raves from critics and became a finalist in the 2005 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, and was even exhibited in the 1st Filipino Film Festival in New York
in 2006.

Layang Bilanggo will introduce characters we will see ourselves in when the 2010 Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival kicks off from November 10 to 16 at the Shang Cineplex. Its equally much-awaited Awards Night will be held on November 14 at the Dolphy Theater of the ABS-CBN.

The Cinema One Originals Film Festival 2010 is an annual project of Cinema One. Cinema One is the movie channel on cable owned and operated by Creative Programs, Inc.
