Diether celebrates birthday with 2500 kids

FREEHAND by Mario E. Bautista

DIETHER OCAMPO turned a year older on July 19. Instead of having a party, he chose to treat 2,500 kids in Bacolor, Pampanga. “I want to share my blessings with less fortunate kids,” he says. “My plan is to go all over the country to help other needy kids.”

Diet’s career continues to do well. He’s in the TV series “Rubi” and has just finished two new movies: Regal’s 50th anniversary offering “Mamarazzi” with Eugene Domingo and John Lapus and “Slow Fade” for PLDT with Lara Precious Quigaman. He’s also shooting “Sa’Yo Lamang” with Lorna Tolentino for Star Cinema.
His ex-wife, Kristine Hermosa, is said to be marrying Oyo Sotto next year. Any reaction? “I’m honestly happy for them. I know maganda ang pagsasama nila and I will pray na magtagal sana ito.”

Would he attend their wedding if invited? “Wag natin silang pangunahan. I don’t think they’d do that kaya tigilan na yang mga ganyan. Moment nila yun. Makikigulo pa ba ko? Maging happy na lang tayo for them.”

Will he and pretty girlfriend Rima Ostwani soon follow? “We have no such plans.”
A scene from “Mamarazzi” shows Uge kissing him so hungrily. How did he feel about it? John Lapus butts in: “Ang tawag dun, kissab: kiss na may ngasab.”

“Wala namang malisya yun,” says Uge, Eugene’s pet name.

“Actually, nagulat ako run kasi hindi talaga yun kasama sa original script,” Diet laughs. “Kaya with Eugene, you should always be prepared because of her spontaneous actions. You don’t know what she’d do next so magpaubaya ka na lang kasi siya ang nagdadala ng eksena. She’s really passionate with her work so you should just let go. But working with her is a great experience. I enjoyed it as I learned so much from her.”

So what’s the taste of Uge’s lips? Diet then suddenly kissed Uge who’s seated beside him on the lips, prompting Alfie Lorenzo to shout: “Yuck!” “Masarap”, says Diet. “Parang special lechon Cebu na di na kailangan ng sarsa.”

In the story, Diet plays John’s boyfriend who is borrowed by Eugene to give her kids of her own. She gives birth to triplets. “But in the end, there’s a twist that will really make you laugh,” adds Diet.

In real life, would he agree to father Uge’s kids? “Why not? I’m open to any possibility. Walang imposible sa mundo.”

WE GOT various readers’ reactions about Kris Aquino. We chose this one that more or less summarizes the opinions of all the letters we got. From Jermaine Sy Tiamson: “Doesn’t Kris Aquino’s endless revelations about her personal life and failed marriage make you feel sick? Sa totoo lang, it’s already coming out of my ears so I told myself I won’t ever watch her again on TV when she makes another of those self confessions on which she obviously thrives. She called herself a wicked witch and it’s true. It’s good her husband James Yap is wise enough to keep his mouth shut to balance off his ex-wife’s talkativeness. Kris’s admission that she admires Mayor Junjun Binay of Makati and she’s willing to go out to dinner with him is really sickening. Why can’t she wait for her marriage to be annulled before revealing this? The public sympathy goes to James because of such indiscretions on her part. Sa totoo lang, nagmukha siyang kaladkarin. It’s her fault that she got tired of him so quickly. She said she was told they’re so different from each other and their marriage won’t work, but she’s so bullheaded and won’t listen to anyone. I distinctly remember she’s even the one who made pamanhikan to James’ family in Negros and made promises to them. Maybe that footage should be shown on TV again to remind her that she has no one to blame but herself for her own kagagahan. James should feel relieved and say good riddance.”

RICHARD GUTIERREZ might be in a remote island right now for “Survivor Philippines” but he keeps in touch with GMA Films to check on the promo for his film “In Your Eyes”. He’s happy that public reception to its trailer is very positive. “Most of the films I did before are light romances and ‘In Your Eyes’ is the most demanding so far,” he says. “My role as a man torn between two sisters who I both get to bed is a different kind of love triangle story that requires me to go through a whole new range of emotions I’ve never experienced before. Kaya nga I want to see the film na sana to find out how I fared.”

His mom has seen its edited version with Director Mac Alejandre and she says she’s so excited for her son. “Ang ganda ng movie. It captured the beauty of California where the story happens. I’m not saying this dahil nanay niya ko, pero napakagaling talaga ni Chard sa ‘In Your Eyes’. Marami siyang gugulatin.”

“That’s true,” adds Direk Mac. “With his tour de force performance here as Storm, the photographer who becomes the object of conflict between Claudine Barretto and Anne Curtis, he’s now a bonafide drama actor. Talagang after being recognized as an action star for ‘Captain Barbell’, ‘Kamandag’ and ‘Zorro’, I can say he’s a revelation here.”

Even his dad Eddie Gutierrez is so proud of him. “I can say with pride na maraming narating ang anak ko na hindi ko naabot noogn time ko. He does comedy, romance, action and now, serious drama. He’s also into hosting ‘Survivor’ and environmental docus na nanalo pa ng award sa New York, like ‘Planet Philippines’.”
“In Your Eyes” opens nationwide on August 18, supported by Joel Torre, Raymond Lauchengco, Maricar de Mesa, Rey PJ Abellana, CJ Jaravata and the L.A.-based Leandro Munoz.

MIKE AUSTRIA is now an established painter like his dad Tam Austria but he still dabbles in acting every now and then. He now plays the pivotal role of the police inspector who knows the secret of the major characters in ABS-CBN’s afternoon soap, “Rosalka” starring Empress Schuck. “I was a teener when I joined showbiz,” he says. “I played the best friend of Daniel Fernando in ‘Scorpio Nights’ in 1985 then nakasama ko sina Gretchen Barretto and Nadia Montenegro in ’14, Going Steady’. Then I appeared with Gelli de Belen in ‘Impakta’ and with Snooky Serna in ‘Rosa Mystica’. I never aimed to be a superstar, basta nage-enjoy lang ako. Then I focused on painting but I never forgot acting. Actually, my dad is against my being a painter. Kasi ayaw raw niyang daanan ko yung paghihirap niya before he made a name for himself, so I took up business, pero wala, hilig ko rin talaga. I have a sister. She finished fine arts but she’s now into breeding dogs. Now, I’d like to think may sarili na kong clients, especially among Pinoys abroad. Thanks to the internet. When they come home, they look for me to buy my work. I have two kids, Chantal, 9 and Shane, 4. Pareho ring mahilig mag-paint.”

Ten of his works are now on exhibit at Manny Valera’s Rave Art Gallery at No.8 Sct. Magbanua near corner Roces Ave., along with the paintings of Chin Chin Gutierrez. His works revolve on the theme of family and love like “Champion ang Tatay Ko”, “Sa Piling ni Nanay”, “Kambal”, “Musika ng Puso”, “Awit ng Pag-ibig”. Chin’s works are about the environment and a tribute to the Canticle of Creatures by St. Francis of Assissi, like “Humility”, “Brother Wind”, “Sister Water”, “Blood of Christ”, “Brother Fire”, “Silence”, “Asceticism”.

“Chin and I first got to work together as commercial models for Great Taste coffee in the late 80s,”

CONGRATS TO GMA-7. Their coverage of Pres. Noynoy Aquino’s first State of the Nation Address, SONA 2010, is the runaway ratings winner per the more widely recognized Nielsen TV Audience Measurement. Mega Manila Overnight Household Ratings show that GMA-7’s SONA 2010 bested ABS CBN’s Boses ng Bayan with a whopping 5.7% lead – with SONA 2010 earning 21% compared to the other station’s 15.3%. GMA-7’s SONA coverage was also the ratings leader based on the Mega Manila Overnight People Ratings, which measures the number of “eyeballs” or the actual number of people watching. SONA 2010’s 8.5% posted a clear lead of 2.6% over Boses ng Bayan’s 5.9%. Studio anchored by GMA News pillars Mike Enriquez and Mel Tiangco, with Arnold Clavio and Vicky Morales as field anchors, SONA 2010 also used popular new media like Youscoop, Twitter and Facebook. The highly interactive coverage encouraged scores of people from all walks of life to participate in the day’s biggest event. SONA 2010 also out-scooped the competition by being the first to interview Congressman Dato Arroyo, son of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, and former Agriculture Secretary and now Bohol Congressman Arthur Yap regarding their reactions to President Noynoy’s address, particularly his criticisms of the Arroyo administration. The success of SONA 2010 comes right after the ratings triumph of GMA-7’s inauguration coverage PANATA SA PAGBABAGO, which also follows closely the ratings success of GMA-7’s election coverage ELEKSYON 2010.
