Suy does acoustic version of Poker Face

WE'VE BEEN wondering about the identity of the local singer who did acoustic versions of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga songs like "Love Story" and "Poker Face". It turns out she's Suy and her debut album has just been released by Ivory Music. Her real name is Dorothy Galvez and she got Suy from her pet name, Bunsoy, being the youngest in their family. Born in Cavite and raised in Davao, she became the lead singer of a band, Natural High, in 2004, doing soul, RnB and pop songs with her very soothing voice. Ivory first got her to do back up vocals and compilation albums, like their bestselling "Unplugged Series". She's so good that Ivory boss Steven Tan launched her as a solo artist in her debut acoustic album, "Simply Suy", with 12 songs. Ten of them are English revivals: "Words Get in the Way" (the first single), "Every Now and Then", "The Show", "Moonshadow", "Could've Been", "Later", "Cry", "Everyday I Love You", "Lost in Your Eyes" and "Lucky". The lone Tagalog song is a remake of Ariel Rivera's "Simple Lang". Also included is Suy's own composition, "You're All that I Need", that she dedicates to the Lord but can also be interpreted as a love song. The album has three bonus tracks: "Love Story", "Poker Face" and "I'm Yours". It's easy to fall in love with Suy's relaxing style of singing. On May 14, Suy will have gig at the House of Runes on West Avenue. For tickets and bookings, call Orly Valerio on 412-3958 or Albert M. Sunga on 0919-570-5892 or 722-9771 local 115.
