INSTEAD OF COMING UP with a local soap to replace “Pamilya Roces” on late primetime, GMA-7 has chosen to air a Koreanovela in its stead. This is “My Golden Life”, the story of two sisters whose lives changed drastically because of a big mistake that their mother made.

Ken Chan and Sanya Lopez lead the actors who will do the Tagalog voice overs for the Korean characters in the show. Ken plays Dion Choi, the heir of the Haesung Group of Companies who got his master’s degree from the USA and is now the leader of their Strategic Planning Team. Sanya plays Gillian Seo, a poor but light hearted and cheerful young woman who is happy to be given the chance to work with Haesung Group for two years.

Dion and Gillian meet in an accident and by some twist of fate, Dion discovers that Gillian is his sister who’s been missing for a long time. Gillian knows this is not true but she takes advantage of the chance to live the life of wealthy people. She starts living with Dion’s rich family and she’s so elated with the improvement of her social status in life. She enjoys all the glitz and glamour of being rich, but what will happen to her once the truth is revealed and her secret is uncovered?

The other important characters are Luke Sun (voice by Bruno Gabriel), Gillian’s devoted friend who has been secretly in love with her since high school and operates a do-it-yourself furniture store, and Giselle Seo (voice by Ayra Mariano), Gillian’s twin sister who works in a local bakery and doesn’t know that she and Gillian are long lost sisters. “My Golden Life” now airs weeknights after “Onanay”.

IT’S SAD that “All the Money in the World” quickly left our theaters. It’s one of the best films shown last year and Ridley Scott (who’s best known for films like “Gladiator” and “Alien”) shows he knows how to make a truly engrossing drama based on true events.

The story is about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, who was 16 years old when he was kidnapped in Rome on July 10, 1973. This is the film’s opening scene, that seems to be a tribute to “La Dolce Vita” with the prostitutes in the Trevi Fountatin. His kidnappers demanded $17 million for Paul’s return. His grandfather, John Paul Getty, was then the richest man in the world and the kidnapping hit the headlines around the globe.

Paul III is the narrator of the movie himself and he tells us at the start of the movie how his grandfather became that rich because of all the oil he extracted from Saudi Arabia that became known as Getty Oil. The movie is based on the book “Painfully Rich: the Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty” by John Pearson and Scott did an excellent adaptation. The kidnapping incident was also shown in the TV series, “Trust” by Danny Boyle.

Scott’s version is presented as a kidnap thriller. Actually, you already know what will happen but it’s still very exciting to watch. The script is so well written in establishing the character of Getty Sr. and Christopher Plummer gives a masterful performance in the role of someone who’s clearly insane.

Despite having all the money in the world, he’s so stingy that he would easily eclipse Ebenezer Scrooge and Silas Marner, the iconic misers in literature who’ll look more generous compared to him. We’re not surprised that Plummer is nominated in the Oscars for he really gives an insightful portrayal.

To think he was just hired as replacement for the disgraced Kevin Spacey, the original choice for the part who was fired after cases of sexual misconduct was filed against him. All of Spacey’s shot footage were cut off then reshot with Plummer as Getty Sr. just one month before the film’s playdate.

But the heart of the film is actually Michelle Williams as the mother, Gail Harris, a middle class woman who separated from John Paul Jr. (Paul Buchan), the father of Paul III, because of his drug addiction. Actually, the movie would have been a short film if Getty Sr. quickly agreed to pay what the kidnappers are asking for. But he keeps on haggling to make the amount lower when he claims that Paul III is his special favorite among all his 14 grandchildren.

It’s quite obvious that all his accumulated riches as the world’s first billionaire has warped his mind. His being a cheapskate is actually repulsive in so many levels and Plummer captures all that and truly embodies the role convincingly on the big screen. Otherwise, how can he allow his favorite grandson to suffer in the hands of his captors (Paul III’s right ear was cut off and sent to his mother to prove that he’s still alive) for two months?

Williams nails it right when she is shown dealing with her annoying father in law, displaying astonishing restraint when we can also feel her seething anger and frustration. She’s superb in that scene where discovers the real worth of an ancient Egyptian artifact that Getty Sr. claimed to have a value of $1.2 million. The film’s last shot shows her staring at the bust of her now dead father in law, who believes he’s the reincarnation of Roman Emperor Hadrian, and it certainly speaks volumes. It’s just a pity that she’s ignored this time by the academy voters.

Giving good support is Charlie Plummer as Paul III (he’s not at all related to Christopher) and Mark Wahlberg as Getty Sr.’s business manager who works hand in hand with Gail in dealing with the kidnappers. Mark’s best scene is his reaction when Getty Sr. makes another obnoxious demand to Gail and he finally gives him a piece of his mind.

Obviously, a lot of liberties were taken in recounting the story on screen but all in all, it’s a satisfying dramatization of real events. The production design and cinematography captures the look and milieu of the 70s, with Getty III’s home often shrouded in darkness and the rural setting where Paul’s imprisoned in a remote location in Southern Italy clouded with the sadness of the fall season. And yes, the film once more underlines the truth that not all the money in the world can buy you true happiness and satisfcation in life.

Nine of the kidnsppers were eventually arrested. Most of the ransom was never recovered. In 1977, Paul III had a reconstruction of his ear that was cut off by his captors. A year after his kidnapping, he married a German girl and became a dad at 18. His son is Balthazar Getty, who became an actor. Paul III became a drug addict like his dad and he had an overdose in 1981 that left him a quadriplegic who can’t speak and was partially blind. He died in 2011 at the age of 54.

THE FANS of Heart Evangelista and her love team with Korean actor Alexander Lee have reason to feel sad. Their primetime romcom, “My Korean Jagiya”, is ending next week on January 12 after a successful five-month run.

“Maraming nagme-message sa’kin na malulungkot sila pag wala na ang show, pero abangan nyo dahil pasabog ang ending ng ‘My Korean Jagiya’,” says Heart. “Magkahiwalay kami ngayon so malalaman ninyo kung magkikita pa ba kami ni Alexander or not. This is one of my successful shows ever and I can really feel na tinanggap talaga ako ng viewers nang buong puso in my role as Gia. From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank all the regular followers of the show na sumubaybay sa amin gabi-gabi for five months.”

Viewers are also curious as to what will happen with the love triangle between Janice de Belen, Ricky Davao and Raymart Santiago, a zany subplot in the show that made viewers glued to it night after night. “Nakakatuwa ang mangyayari sa kanila,” says Heart. “We really have to thank our director, Mark Reyes, sa dami ng heartwarming situations na naiisip nila ng team niya to make the story truly endearing for the audience.”

After this, Heart says she won’t accept any new show for a while, so that she and her husband Sen. Chiz Escudero can concentrate on their “little project”. Although she won’t specify it, you can read between the lines as she has already declared before that she and Sen. Chiz want to have their own baby this year.

She has also said before that they just want one baby because Chiz has already twins, a boy and a girl, from his previous marriage. “Okay lang sa amin kahit boy or girl ang ibigay ni Lord sa amin,” adds Heart. “Basta ang mahalaga, healthy siya at sana, hindi maging mahirap ang pagbubuntis ko.”

HEART EVANGELISTA is thrilled to be working with two Korean heartthrobs in “My Korean Jagiya”, Alexander Lee and Andy Ryu. “I feel lucky to be given the chance to work with them as they’re both gentlemen and both very talented,” she says.

Didn’t Xander get jealous when Andy joined them in the show? “He says hindi naman daw, but it’s the fans who are getting jealous kasi sanay na sila kay Xander. But wait until they meet Andy, na very lovable din ang dating.”

So how is it working with Andy? “Medyo nahihirapan siya kasi nga he doesn’t speak English fluently like Xander does. So it’s also a challenge for me. Ang role ko pa naman, interpreter niya kasi big star siya in Korea na nagpunta rito sa atin to promote his new movie, ‘Bus to Busan’. Sa script, biglang may Korean lines akong ita-translate kaya challenge talaga for me. I cannot compare him with Xander kasi bago pa lang kaming nagkasama, unlike si Xander na matagal-tagal na. But both of them are very hardworking. Pareho rin silang mabilis kumilos, walang arte sa katawan.”

Recently, she was invited to the Tatler ball in BGC and got the surprise of her life when she was seated next to famous French shoe designer Christian Louboutin, whose shoes she’s really been wearing for sometime now.

“I didn’t expect it kasi I’m very shy sa ganoon, but it’s magical as he’s really nice. Super bait niya. I’m a huge fan. We started to talk at nag-click kami agad. Sobrang nice niya and warm. Niyaya pa akong sumayaw. You wanna dance? I said, I’m shy, I don’t really dance, but he took me and so we danced. The following night, the Tantocos of Rustan hosted an intimate dinner for him and I was invited, so two nights kaming nagchika-chika. Nag-exchange pa kami ng numbers. He’s really my brand kasi I’m so comfortable in his shoes and I was even wearing them nang ikasal ako, so dream come true for me to meet him.”

ANDY RYU (Ryu Sang Wook), the new Korean leading man of Heart Evangelista in “My Korean Jagiya”, is formally introduced to the press by GMA-7 and the consensus is that he is better looking than Alexander Lee. The eldest of three kids, his family is from Daegu, Korea, four hours away from the capital, Seoul. The eldest of three kids, he was born on March 4, 1985 but looks younger than his age. His two siblings now work in Seoul and L.A. Writers familiar with K drama say he’s a lookalike of Song Joong Ki and he agrees. Speaking with an interpreter, he says he and Song attended the same acting school in Seoul.

“When I got there, they told me they already have an actor who looks like me and it’s Song,” he says. “When people see me in public, they sometimes mistake me for him.”

How did he get the role of Alexander Lee’s rival over Heart Evangelista in “My Korean Jagiya”. “The manager of Alexander is a friend of my manager. He told my manager they’re looking for a new actor in the show and he would like to recommend me. My manager told me about it. At first, I was nervous because I don’t speak English well but I got excited because I already heard of ‘My Korean Jagiya’, so I said yes.”

“METEOR GARDEN” is a drama made in Taiwan in 2001 that was a big hit when shown later in the Philippines. It is actually based on a Japanese manga (comics) series, “Boys Over Flowers”, which was not as big a hit as “Meteor Garden” when it was shown in our country later. “Hana Yori Dango”, the original Japanese version, was also shown here and likewise didn’t make waves like “Meteor Garden” did.

Now, they are remaking “Meteor Garden” in Shanghai and ABS-CBN has already bought the rights to its future telecast here in Manila. The new members of the F4 (F is for flower), the elite boy group in a top university, has also been announced. The new actors who will play the lead roles in the remake are Dylan Wang as Dao Ming Si (played then by Jerry Yan), Darren Chen as Hua Ze Lei (by Vic Zhou), Caesar Wu as Ximen (by Ken Chu) and Connor Leong as Meizuo (by Vanness Wu).

The role of San Chai, the brave girl who stood up to their bullying played then by Barbie Shu, will now be played by new Chinese actress Shen Yue. Meantime, GMA-7 has announced that they’ll also do their own version of “Boys Over Flowers”, which has been locally produced in several countries such as Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.

The F4 members of the original "Boys Over Flowers" were Koreans: Lee Min-ho as Gu Jun-pyo, Kim Hyun-joong as Yoon Ji-hoo, Kim Bum as So Yi-jung, and Kim Joon as Song Woo-bin.

GMA Network First VP for Program Management Jose Mari Abacan is happy to be airing the Philippine adaptation of the said TV series. “We’re very pleased to announce that we are doing our own version of Boys Over Flowers in partnership with JU Entertainment Movie and Drama Inc. It’s a huge project and we promise to give our viewers something to look forward to soon.”

There will be a nationwide audition to find the new cast members of the Pinoy series. “In order for us to find the actors who will portray the coveted characters in the series, we will have a nationwide open casting call that will give equal chance to talented individuals who want to be part of this highly anticipated project.”

GMA Films and GMA Worldwide Inc. President Annette Gozon adds: “We hope that we live up to everyone’s expectations and I know the talent of the Filipinos is something to be proud of worldwide, so I’m positive that we won’t disappoint the show’s fans.”

JU Entertainment Movie and Drama Inc. Chief Executive Officer Son Jong Wook looks forward to a successful partnership with GMA Network. “I would like to thank GMA for this partnership. Looking forward to a fruitful relationship with the Network and we are all excited with this project.”

So let’s see which one will be more successful between the two remakes: that of “Meteor Garden” or “Boys Over Flowers”.
