Stars who officially got engaged this year are Anne Curtis with chef husband Erwan Heussaff, Billy Crawford and Coleen Garcia, Erich Gonzales and Daniel Matsunaga, Rochelle Pangilinan and Arthur Solinap, Gwen Zamora and Jeremy Marquez, widow Camille Prats and new found love JB Yambot, Desiree del Valle and Boom Labrusca, Luis Alandy and non-showbiz fiancee Joselle Fernandez, and Bangs Garcia and British boyfriend Lloyd Birchmore who already have a wedding date, January 17, in Boracay, where they first met each other.

An actress who had a same sex wedding in December is Rosanna Roces with transgender Jessy Arias.

Transwoman Ate Glow (impersonator of former Pres. Gloria Arroyo whose real name is Rene Facunla) also married a British guy last July in London and is now known as Renee Hampshire.

The actress daughter of Rez Cortez, Cai Cortez, also admitted she got married in civil rites with Tunisian businessman Wissem Rahkmi and she just gave birth to their son, Habib.

Other folks who found romance in each other this year are actor Geoff Eigenmann and singer Maya, singers Michael Pangilinan and Garie Concepcion, Brazilian import Fabio Ide and ex-beauty queen Bianca Manalo.

Zsa Zsa Padilla broke up with Architect Conrad Onglao but patched things up and have since gone back into each other’s arms.

Also reported to have gotten back into each other’s arm when they were paired in the movie “How to Be Yours” are Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson, but they have yet to admit it formally in public.

Bea used to be on with Zanjoe Marudo and reports of their split up were reported late in 2015 and confirmed early this year.

After her breakup from Rocco Nacino, Lovi Poe seems to have found a new romance in a non-showbiz foreign guy, Chris Johnson. He is currently in Manila to spend the Christmas holidays with Lovi, then they will fly to Thailand for the New Year, but Lovi insists they’re not yet officially on even if their action speaks louder than her words.

Aiko Melendez found new romance in an Iranian named Shahin Alimirzapour in April and seems so happy about it even if she’s 12-years older than him. But five months later in September, the relationship was over. Aiko’s ex-husband, Jomari Yllana, is said to be romancing his “The Half Sisters” co-star Jean Garcia and they’re constantly seen together. But they have yet to admit their romance in public.

A controversial relationship involves that of sexpot Ellen Adarna and presidential Baste Duterte, simply because Baste already has a model girlfriend with whom he has a child.

Those who got together include Luis Manzano and Jessy Mendiola. Jessy earlier rekindled her romance with JM de Guzman, which crumbled once again when JM was reported to not have succeeded in kicking an old habit. Jessy was later accused of causing the break up of Luis and Angel Locsin, which was also just rekindled, but Luis says his relationship with Jessy started long after his split from Angel.

JaDine love team’s James Reid and Nadine Lustre finally admitted that they’re on after working together for nearly two years. Their “On the Wings of Love” soap was a big hit when they still kept people guessing about the real score between them. Sadly, after they admitted that they’re really on for reel and real, their new soap “Till We Meet Again” failed to hit the high ratings of their past soap.

Following in the footsteps of JaDine, the KathNiel love team of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla also admitted that they’re officially together and this resulted in the big box office hit that was “Barcelona: A Love Untold”.

Just like Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo whose romance was rekindled, it’s also a case of love is lovelier the second time around for Kylie Padilla and Aljur Abrenica who broke up in 2014 and got together again after two years. While they were off, Kylie was linked to teen actor Julian Trono, with whom she had a break up, according to Aljur himself.

After Piolo Pascual and Paulo Avelino, KC Concepcion seems to have gotten tired of actors and is now going steady with athlete Aly Borromeo, team captain of the Philippine Azkals. Both her parents Gabby Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta have expressed their approval for Aly.

Other stars who have found romance in a non-showbiz partner are Sunshine Cruz, the ex-wife of Cesar Montano, who found new love in the arms of Macky Mathay, the half brother of actress Ara who’s also separated from his first spouse. Both of them have kids from their past relationships.
Alex Gonzaga finds a new beau with non-showbiz guy Mikee Morada who’s said to come from a well-to-do family. After her controversial relationships with Jake Ejercito and Albie Casino, Andi Eigenmann found new romance in non-showbiz guy Emilio Arambulo. Kapamilya matinee idol Sam Milby was last linked to Anne Curtis. He now finds comfort in the arms of a Japanese-English model, Mari Jasmine.

Kim Chiu and Xian Lim used to deny that they are on but when they did their soap this year, “The Story of Us”, they finally admitted that they’re romantically involved with each other. Still, this did not help the show to achieve high ratings.

At the Kapuso network, love bloomed between Tom Rodriguez and Carla Abellana after they did “My Husband’s Lover” and “My Destiny”. They were also paired in the movie “No Boyfriend Since Birth”. At first, they said they were just exclusively dating but this year, they officially admitted that they’re indeed going steady and are now together in the U.S. with Tom's family.

Another couple who were linked to each other but finally admitted their romance officially only this year is Miss World 2013 Megan Young and Mikael Daez.

Max Collins and Pancho Magno also finally confessed this year that they’ve been together for quite sometime now.

Another pair of Kapuso lovebirds who owned up to their relationship are Mark Herras and Winwyn Marquez and they just celebrated Mark’s recent 30th birthday in Boracay a couple of weeks ago.

Julie Anne San Jose and Benjamin Alves also got cozy after they did a music video. They’re now paired in the new soap “Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa”.

Meantime, their co-star in the same soap, LJ Reyes, has found love in Paolo Contis. LJ has a son with Paulo Avelino while Paolo has two daughter with former Sexbomb dancer Lian Paz.

Another Kapuso actress, Louise de los Reyes, is now lovey-dovey with Hale band’s main singer Champ Lui Pio.

Kapuso stars Barbie Forteza and Kiko Estrada got cozy while doing the soap “That’s My Amboy”. Barbie quickly admitted their relationship but Kiko seems to be shy about it and denied it. Reporters quickly concluded, “Hindi magtatagal yan.” And that’s exactly what happened.

Valeen Montenegro was reported to be the cause of the break up of Ciara Sotto’s marriage to TV exec Jojo Oconer, but she says she has a non-showbiz boyfriend, a Filipino-Spanish guy named Selu Lozano.

BEFORE THE year is over, let’s take one last look at 2016. As usual, we give what our readers prefer: the report on the colorful love life of our celebrities. In this first part of our yearender, we write abut those who became romantically involved with each other this year, those who got married and those who got officially engaged.

Wedding bells rang for three of the so called IT Girls: Solenn Heussaff married live in partner Nico Bolzico in France on May 21.

Georgina Wilson had her wedding with Arthur Burnand in England on April 29.

Isabelle Daza and groom Adrien Semblatt chose Tuscany, Italy for their nuptials on September 11.

Dec 27, 2013

THE year is about to end and before we ring out the old and ring in the new, let’s have one last look at what happened in the passing year. For us Pinoys, it’s been a year of disasters, like the earthquake that shook Bohol and Cebu, the killer typhoon that devastated Eastern Visayas and brought in international celebrities to help us like Anderson Cooper and Justin Bieber, and the useless rebellion in Zamboanga that destroyed lives and property.

Internationally, the most positive news for us is the election of Pope Francis that ushered in a new era of enlightenment for us Catholics. And for a nation so enamoured with beauty queens, the most refreshing news is the triumph of three Pinays in international beauty pageants: Megan Young as the first ever Filipina Miss World held in Indonesia, Johanna Datul as Miss Supranational held in Belarus and Bea Rose Santiago as the fifth Filipina to win the Miss International title in Japan.

Let’s now start with what the public thinks is the most interesting aspect of showbiz: the love life of movie stars.

THE BREAKUPS

1. Rayver Cruz - Cristine Reyes - Derek Ramsay

We’ll begin with the breakups that’s always a hit with the public. They really enjoy confirming that stars have feet of clay, just like them. The year started with Cristine Reyes and Rayver Cruz splitting. Cristine has since hooked up with Derek Ramsay but their relationship lasted for only a month.

See, Cristine Reyes Talks About Derek Ramsay Breakup.

2. Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson

One of the most controversial pairings is that of Maja Salvador and Gerald Anderson. It ruined the friendship of Maja and Kim Chiu, Gerald’s ex-girlfriend who was earlier comforted by Maja when Gerald dumped her.

See, Kim Chiu Looks Like She Has Not Really Moved On From Break Up With Gerald Anderson.

3. Cesar Montano and wife Sunshine Cruz

One of the most controversial celebrity breakups is between Cesar Montano and wife Sunshine Cruz who said Cesar had a paramour, Krista Miller, who was in the cast of the movie he was directing then, “Alfredo Lim, The Untold Story”. Cesar denied it, tried to woo back Sunshine when she moved out of their house, but Sunshine never returned and filed a case in court instead for custody of their children. Sunshine also went back into acting.

Read, Cesar Montano Still Wants To Save Marriage To Sunshine Cruz For The Sake Of Their Daughters.

4. Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto

Another controversial couple, Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto, admitted in July that they’ve separated. They had a bitter breakup that ended up in court. This got even more messy when the elder sisters of Claudine, Gretchen and Marjorie, both sided with Raymart and revealed that she was really under the influence of drugs and had to take rehab for a while in Thailand. Gretchen and Marjorie had a major falling out with their own parents and their dad even allegedly threatened to shoot Gretchen for testifying in favour of Raymart. Looks like there will be no closure for this shame and scandal in their family for a long, long time.

See article, Raymart Santiago Says He Has More Secrets To Reveal About Ex-Wife Claudine Barretto.

5. Krista Kleiner and Jay-R

Jay-R and beauty queen Krista Kleiner broke up, with Krista accusing Jay-R of physical abuse. Krista is now engaged to be married to her Singaporean fiancé.

6. Billy Crawford and Nikki Gil

Billy Crawford dumped girlfriend of five-years Nikki Gil. The rumor is that he has found a new love in Coleen Garcia, who also just broke up with Gab Valenciano. He denied it then, but now, they’re more open about their relationship in “Showtime”.

Full article here, Nikki Gil and Billy Crawford break up after four years.

7. Maxene Magalona and Renz Fernandez

Maxene Magalona and Renz Fernandez also broke up. Renz remains unattached, but Maxene is now on with a non-showbiz guy named Chino Capuyoc. Another ex-BF of hers, producer Neil Arce, is now on with Bela Padilla.

More here, Maxene Magalona On Why She Broke Up With Renz Fernandez.

8. Bea Binene and Jake Vargas

Teen stars Bea Binene and Jake Vargas never admitted that they were on, but it was revealed that they did go steady when they broke up in August, only to reconcile anew after a few weeks.

9. Janine Tugonon with her boyfriend Jaypee

One of the most talked about breakups is that of Miss Universe First Runner up Janine Tugonon with her boyfriend Jaypee, who did it while they were guests on “Kris TV”. Janine got a lot of flak for it since she seems to have entertained thoughts that she’s being wooed by a foreign singer, which sadly didn’t come true.

10. Luis Manzano broke up with Jennylyn Mercado

Luis Manzano broke up with Jennylyn Mercado after two years of being together. Angel Locsin broke up with Azkal player Phil Younghusband after being on for more than a year.

Read, Jennylyn Mercado Feels No Need To Still Communicate With Luis Manzano and Luis Manzano Moves On After Breakup With Jennylyn Mercado.

11. LJ Reyes and Paulo Avelino

LJ Reyes and Paulo Avelino admitted they’ve separated. Paulo is now wooing KC Concepcion. LJ was linked to JC De Vera but claims they’re just good friends. Teen stars Kristoffer Martin also chose to part ways with Joyce Ching.

See, LJ Reyes finally talks about her break up with Paulo Avelino.

12. Rhian Ramos and KC Montero

Rhian Ramos used to talk animatedly about her relationship with KC Montero, Geneva Cruz’ ex-husband who replaced DJ Mo in her heart. Geneva herself has found new love. She’s now engaged to a Fil-Am guy in the U.S. named Lee Paulsen and is preggy with their first child, a baby girl. Geneva’s son with Paco Arrespacochaga is now 17 years old. Meantime, Rhian has revealed that just before the year is over, she and KC have already broken up.

13. Daiana Menezes and ex-Cong. Benjo Benaldo

The most mysterious relationship of the year is that of Brazilian beauty Daiana Menezes and ex-Cong. Benjo Benaldo of Cagayan de Oro. It turned out they’ve already gotten married secretly, then Daiana came out in Facebook with fotos showing her black and blue, denouncing her husband for battering her. They kissed and made up then Benaldo hit the headlines for allegedly shooting himself, which he subsequently denied, saying he didn’t try committing suicide.

Next: The weddings and engagements.

SO MANY showbiz denizens bid the world goodbye. The biggest name was Comedy King Dolphy who had a long illness and finally said farewell on July 10. Three top directors who went to the great beyond were Marilou Diaz Abaya after a long fight with the big C, Mario O’Hara after a shot bout with leukemia and Celso Ad. Castillo due to a heart attack.

Other celebs who passed include 1950’s actress Linda Estrella (mother of child actress Tessie Agana), actor Luis Gonzales, rocker Karl Roy, songwriter Bodgie Dasig, theatre director Tony Espejo, director-writer Anthony Taylor (real name: Freddie Gargantilla), newscaster Angelo Castro, beauty queen-activist Maita Gomez, Joey Stevens (husband of Amalia Fuentes), LVN Pictures actress Nita Javier, actor Mario Taguiwalo, scriptwriter-novelist Edgardo M. Reyes (best known for “Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag”), Bruce Garcia (grandson of Marissa Delgado), actress Estrella Kuenzler, editor-director Ike Jarlego Jr. and actor Chiqui Xeres Burgos. The nation also mourned the passing of well loved DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo in a plane crash.

But the stork was also busy. Those who gave birth this year include Pia Guanio (baby girl), Priscilla Mereilles (baby boy), Katrina Halili (baby girl), Precious Lara Quigaman (baby boy) and Angelica Jones (baby boy).

The biggest controversy was the encounter at the airport of Raymart Santiago and wife Claudine Barretto versus Ramon Tulfo. Claudine was reprimanding a ground attendant for their missing luggage when they saw Tulfo videotaping it and this leads to a violent fracas. Both parties sued each other and Tulfo’s two brothers, Erwin and Raffy, joined the fray on the air, resulting in the suspension of their show, “T3”, for three months.

So many celebrities sued each other in court.

Then there’s sister versus sister when Ara Mina field a case of slander against her younger sister Cristine Reyes for maligning her on Twitter.

Annabelle Rama sued Ynna Asistio so Ynna’s mother Nadia Montenegro sued Annabelle’s son Richard Gutierrez. Annabelle had an altercation with Amalia Fuentes who later sued her for her alleged libellous messages on Twitter and even her daughter Ruffa Gutierrez, plus Bianca Gonzales. Amalia and her son were later stabbed by their tenants so Amalia sued them. But Annabelle kissed and made up with GMA exec Wilma Galvante, who has retired from GMA and moved to TV5.

So many stars fought back against their hecklers and bashers on social media, including Zsa Zsa Padilla, Regine Velasquez, Angelica Panganiban and Lea Salonga. But the most ardent was Sharon Cuneta who answered most of her detractors (especially those of her daughter KC Concepcion) personally. On the bright side, she reconciled with her Tita Helen Gamboa with whom she earlier had a rift.

Estranged couple Andi Eigenmann and Albie Casino met by chance in an affair in a Makati bar. Albie claimed he was mauled by some of Andi’s friends. Later, Andi also had an encounter with another ex-boyfriend, Jake Ejercito (son of ex-Pres. Joseph Estrada and Laarni Enriquez), who revealed in an interview that she’s a two-timer as she went steady with both him and Albie.

Ruffa Gutierrez was enraged by malicious questions and innuendos made to her by her co-hosts in “Paparazzi” and she resigned. The show was eventually cancelled a few weeks later.

Sen. Tito Sotto was accused of plagiarism while he was defending his stand against the RH Bill (which was eventually passed by congress) and he claimed he was victim of cyberbullying. Two other celebrated incidents magnified by social media were the case of Robert Carabuena punching an MMDA traffic enforcer and the Amalayer girl confronting an MRT lady security guard whose footages were posted on youtube.

Baron Geisler was arrested when a neighbor complained against him for being unruly and was jailed 14 hours. In the more recent TV5 MVP ball, co-stars Edgar Allan Guzman and Divine Lee complained against him for misbehaving while under the influence of liquor.

Bea Binene and her mother were sued for libel by their own lawyer, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio.

Once again, local television is busier than the movie business. Atty. Felipe Gozon called a special presscon at the start of 2012 just to announce the seven new shows of GMA-7: “Legacy”, “Biritera”, “My Beloved”, “Hiram na Puso”, “The Good Daughter”, “Alice Bungisngis and the Wonder Walis” and “Broken Vow”. Other shows introduced later were “One True Love” (a big hit), “Hindi Ka Na Mag-iisa”, “Pare at Pare”, “Faithfully”, “Makapiling Kang Muli”, “Kasalanan Bang Ibigin Ka”, “Mariposa”, “Magdalena”, “Aso ni San Roque”, the short-lived “Coffee Prince”, “Temptation of Wife” and “Pahiram ng Sandali” (that replaced “Haram” after it was shelved due to protests from some Muslims.)

They cancelled the long-running “Showbiz Central” and replaced it with “HOT TV”. Shows that were revived include Mel Tiangco’s “Magpakailanman”, Michael V’s “Pepito Manaloto”, the reality show “Extra Challenge” now hosted by Richard Gutierrez and Marian Rivera, the soap “Sana ay Ikaw na Nga” launching Mikael Daez and Andrea Torres, and “TGIS” which was retitled as “Teen Gen” introducing GMA-7’s new teen stars.

At ABS-CBN, their new shows were “Walang Hanggan” (which became a blockbuster hit), “Lumayo Ka Man sa Akin”, “Mundo Man ay Magunaw” and “E-Boy”. Shows that started later were “Dahil sa Pag-ibig”, “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo”, “Hiyas”, “Lorenzo’s Time”, “The Princess and I”, “Kahit Puso’y Masugatan”, “Ina Kapatid Anak”, “A Beautiful Affair” and “Paraiso”.

But they cancelled their noontime show that wouldn’t rate, “Happy Yipee Yehey”, and “Showtime” was extended to replace it. ABS had a big surprise hit in the morning soap “Be Careful with My Heart” starring Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap.

On TV5, they started their own afternoon soaps with “Felina, Reyna ng mga Pusa” starring Arci Munoz and “Isang Dakot na Luha” starring Danita Paner but sadly, both shows didn’t rate well. Other big shows on TV5 are “Artista Academy”, “Extreme Makeover Home Edition” hosted by Paolo Bediones, “Sharon Kasama Mo” with Sharon Cuneta, “Game N Go” with Edu Manzano and Joey de Leon, “Enchanted Garden”, “Third Eye” and “The Amazing Race Philippines”.

The rigodon of stars started with Patrick Garcia, Carmina Villaroel and Iza Calzado moving from GMA-7 to ABS. Patrick was in “Lumayo Ka Man”, Carmina in “Lorenzo’s Time” and Iza in “Kahit Puso’y Masugatan”.

Derek Ramsay left ABS-CBN and moved to TV5 where he hosted “Amazing Race” and now stars in a new action-fantasy series, “Kidlat”.

Rufa Mae Quinto left “Showbiz Central” and moved to TV5 as co-host of Willie Revillame in “Wiltime Bigtime”, but something happened and she she didn’t last very long in the show. She is later cast as a diwata in the environmental fantasy-drama, “Enchanted Garden”.

There were so many reality shows on TV. The “Pinoy Big Brother” regular edition called PBB Unlimited ended in April with Cebuano Slater Young as the big winner. He’s now part of “Kahit Puso’y Masugatan”. PBB Teens 4 replaced it and the winner is Myrtle Sarrosa who’s now also into acting. ABS-CBN also had “X Factor Philippines” and the winner is KZ Tandingan.

On GMA-7, they had “Protege, The Battle for the Big Artista Break” and the winners are Jeric Gonzales and Thea Tolentino. On TV5, their own search in “Artista Academy” and the winners are Vin Abrenica (brother of GMA’s Starstruck V winner Aljur) and Sophie Albert.

In “Eat Bulaga”, Little Miss Philippines winner Ryza Mae Dizon is now a child star sensation. In Mr. Pogi, their winner is John Edric Ulang.

Celebrities who had tumultuous affairs and called it quits include Dr. Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho, allegedly because of Nancy Castiliogne, Edward Mendez and/or Al Galang, but all this proved to be untrue. Dr. Belo says there’s no third party involved and she continues to support Hayden by making him the head of her new business, ZO skin preparations. They even watched the last Pacquiao fight together in Las Vegas and there are talks that they must have kissed and made up once again.

PBB winner Melai Cantiveros broke up with her runnerup boyfriend Jason Francisco.

Sid Lucero also split from singer girlfriend Bea Lao.

Rufa Mae Quinto called it quits with Boy2 Quizon.

The same for Maja Salvador and Matteo Guidicelli after Maja felt Matteo was just too busy and didn’t have time for her.

Melissa Ricks had a bitter break up with Jake Cuenca but found romance in another Jake, PBB recruit Paul Jake Castillo.

Although they never admitted their relationship, Rocco Nacino and Sheena Halili were reported to have broken up, also Julia Montes and Enchong Dee.

Also rumored to be on are Kris Bernal and Carl Guevarra but they have yet to formally admit it. Maybe they’ll just confess after they broke up, like what Kris did with Jay Perillo before Carl.

Dennis Trillo and Bianca King also broke up after about a year of being together.

But the most bitter breakup is that of Paolo Contis and Sexbomb wife Lian Paz (married in a civil court) that resulted into an ugly exchange of words.

Isabel Oli and Gab Valenciano break up in January and in no time at all, Gab found a replacement in Coleen Garcia. Isabel is being linked to James Yap but she swears it’s not true.

IT’S THE LAST DAY of the passing year and it’s once again the time for us to look back at what happened during 2012, which will be best remembered as the first time a Supreme Court Justice was impeached and convicted.

As usual, the most interesting pastime of the public is following the ups and downs in the love life of our celebrities. The year started with Marco Alcaraz and Lara Quigaman announcing that they’ll have an October wedding, but this was advanced to July 8 as it turned that our the former Miss International was already infanticipating.

Shalani Soledad and Cong. Roman Romulo were officially wed on January 22. SexBomb’s Izzy Tirazona also tied the knot with Starstruck discovery Alvin Aragon.

Former Universal Motion dancer and matinee idol Wowie de Guzman faced the altar with a non-showbiz girl named Sally Ann Reyes. Character actress Melissa Mendez married businessman Eric Gobencion.

But the sweetest nuptials was the surprise wedding of Carmina Villaroel to long time companion Zoren Legaspi who planned the whole thing with the help of ABS-CBN, where their full wedding ceremony and reception were telecast later on.

TV host Grace Lee was linked to Pres. Noynoy Aquino but it fizzled out. What she got was a word war with DJ Angelicopter.

Angelica Panganiban and John Lloyd Cruz finally admitted that they are on. She just broke up with Derek Ramsay and he dumped Shaina Magdayao. But Angelica seems to have difficulty moving on as she continue to make some Twits against Derek.

John Prats and former Bb. Pilipinas Bianca Manalo admitted they were on at the start of the year but broke up only a few months later.

After breaking up with Mickey Ablan, Iwa Moto hooked up with Leandro Munoz but this didn’t last long and Iwa is now on with Pampi Lacson, the ex of Jodi Sta. Maria who is, in turn, now playing beautiful music with Jolo Revilla. Mickey, in turn, hooked up with comedienne Janna Dominguez and they now have a baby girl. Iwa finally admitted that she officially got married to Mickey.

Maxene Magalona and ice cream magnate Neil Arce broke up. Neil is now canoodling with Bela Padilla while Maxene is real cozy with Renz Fernandez, youngest son of Lorna Tolentino and the late Rudy Fernandez.

Dina Bonnevie got married for the third time after Vic Sotto and Dick Penson. The groom is Ilocos Sur Vice Governor DG Savellano who’s also separated from his first wife.

Miss Universe 4th runnerup Venus Raj goes steady with “Umagang Kay Ganda” co-host Andrei Felix.

Heart Evangelista broke up with Daniel Matsunaga and, a few months later, goes steady with Sen. Chiz Escudero, whose marriage to his first wife, stage actress Christine Flores, has been annulled. Daniel is now said to be the latest crush of Kris Aquino. Daniel has appeared in her show “Kris TV” and her movie, “Sisterakas”.

Pinoy Big Brother winner Bea Saw married her long time boyfriend Rocky Tan in January and has just given birth to their first child.

After her traumatic relationship with DJ Mo, Rhian Ramos quickly found new romance in KC Montero, who’s now separated from wife Geneva Cruz.

Also much talked about is the May-December romance between Pauleen Luna (who had a nose job this year) and “Eat Bulaga” co-host Vic Sotto. They used to be silent about it but lately, Vic now practically admits that they are on but they want to keep it quiet.

AT THE OUTSET, let us say this is not a complete list as there were so many indie films shown in small venues to which we were not invited so we didn’t get to see them. This list is just our personal choice. The best films shown for us last year were five entries in Cinemalaya last July and one mainstream feature.

“Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” – Debuting director Marlon Rivera’s rollicking satire on young indie filmmakers who romanticize poverty and have all sorts of ideas about filmmaking, ranging from relevant to weird and outrageous. It really deserves to win best film in Cinemalaya’s New Breed Category. It also has great commercial appeal as a laugh out loud comedy so it’s not surprising it’s a hit in its regular theatrical run, making it an artistic and commercial success. Brilliantly conceived by Chris Martinez (“Here Comes the Bride”) and well executed by debuting director Marlon Rivera, it’s also splendidly acted by Eugene Domingo in the title role, and JM De Guzman and Kean Cipriano as the idealistic filmmakers with the lofty idea of doing the first Filipino film that will make it to the Oscars.

“Patikul” – Directed by Joel Lamangan, this is based on the true story of coffee farmers in Patikul, Sulu, who fight for the right of their kids to get a good education. When their school principal (Marvin Agustin) was kidnapped and beheaded by the Abu Sayyaf, teachers got scared to go to their school. The farmers, led by Allen Dizon, then decide to take arms to personally protect the teachers from the bad guys. It shows how even the lives of innocent children are adversely affected by the strife in Mindano, with one of them even recruited to join the Abu Sayyaf.

“NIÑO” -The directorial debut of Loy Arcenas who also wrote it, it has echoes of Lino Brocka’s “Ina Kapatid Anak” about a balikbayan from the U.S. who returns to their decaying ancestral home and also Nick Joaquin’s “Portrait of the Artist as Filipino” especially the final scene involving a “tertulia”. But Arcenas succeeded to make it his own nostalgic version of a riveting family drama of a once illustrious family now living in oblivion and poverty, well acted by Fides Asencio, Art Acuna, Raquel Villavicencio and Shamaine Buencamino.

“Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” - A film that surpassed all our expectations, this is from writer-director Alvin Yapan whose first work, “Panggagahasa Kay Fe”, failed to impress us. He now has a better grip on his material and succeeds in realizing it artfully on screen with much more taste and finesse. Even the technical credits are more polished this time. The first local film that succeeds in combining dance and poetry, it’s a rare love triangle story with gay overtones that is beautifully understated and handled with much subtlety. Superbly acted by Jean Garcia as the literature and dance teacher who brings together two of her students, Paolo Avelino and Rocco Nacino. The undercurrent of Rocco’s sentiments for Paolo is very palpable but never articulated. You can feel the electricity between them when they dance and even Jean herself observes this, but it is never fully defined.

“Ligo na U, Lapit na Me” – This is originally a novel written by Eros Atalia that is so verbose and certainly more literary than cinematic in its aimless stream of consciousness musings on the part of the author-narrator who shares his views on corruption, floods, the Chinese presence in the country, etc. We wondered how it’d be transferred on the big screen, but in all fairness to screenwriter Gerry Gracio, he succeeded in capturing the book’s core and essence and adapt it well as a movie. Debuting director Erick Salud also did a fine job in his deft handling of the material, making it a sure crowd pleaser for today’s young audiences with its numerous hip and hilarious scenes. Edgar Allan Guzman is splendid as the college student who’s befriended by a free-spirited, liberated, English-speaking classmate (Mercedes Cabral), who takes him to bed without any commitment whatsoever. He falls in love with her then she goes missing one day, never to be seen again, just like real life where nothing is certain.

“Ikaw ang Pag-big” – Directed by Marilou Diaz Abaya, this is the only mainstream film in our list. It’s about a dysfunctional family whose members confront a big crisis when the priest son (Marvin Agustin) is stricken with cancer. It shows how faith can bring a family together again. It’s a loving tribute to the Virgin of Penafrancia in Naga but this is done not in a hard sell but a very quiet and touching manner. The acting standouts here are Shamaine Buencamino as the worried mom and Jomari Yllana as the very supportive doctor-son in law.

The year’s biggest hit movies are said to be Star Cinema-Viva co-production’s “No Other Woman” (P130 million) and “Praybeyt Benjamin” (P300 million). Despite this, mainstream filmmaking remains slack. A great majority of local movies made in 2011 are indie digital films, most of them quickie gay flicks made with a shoestring budget, the flimsiest of stories and shown in very few theaters. We’re told this kind of movie has lost its luster and no longer attract even gay viewers who used to flock to them. Read related article, Vice Ganda's season to bloom and shine.

We had four digital film festivals where some good films were shown. MANY SHOWBIZ denizens left for the great beyond in 2011.

Among the departures, the most controversial was the premeditated murder of Ram Revilla (Ramgen Bautista in rea life), with the suspected conspirators being his own brother and sisters. His girlfriend Janelle Manahan of ABS-CBN got severely injured in the incident and had to undergo a series of surgeries to rehabilitate her face. Adding insult to injury, some folks even uploaded on the internet a sex video of the late young actor and Janelle while making love.

Those who left us also include Rejoice Rivera of Baywalk Bodies (who was shot by unknown assailants just as 2011 was starting), actors Leo Rabago, Armando Goyena, Paquito Diaz, John Apacible (shot by his own uncle), (Antonello Joseph) AJ  Perez (who perished in a car accident at the very young age of 17), veteran komiks novelist Rico Bello Omagap, Jo Ramos (daughter of ex-Pres. Fidel Ramos and ex-wife of Lloyd Samartino), 1950s actress Shirley Gorospe, Director Don Escudero, National Artist Badong Bernal, broadcaster Vic Jose, designers Rudy Fuentes and Boying Eustaquio, writers Vic Sabado and Mar Munoz Kay, musical director Dick Zamora, writer-director Ben Feleo, Anthony Linsangan (Camille Prats’ husband who succumbed to cancer), Director Boots Plata, singer RJ Rosales, Ricky Pempengco (the father of Charice Pempengco who was stabbed to death), director-choreographer Lito Calzado (father of Iza) and Starstruck 1 alumnus Tyron Perez. Let’s all pray for the repose of their souls. May they all rest in peace, amen.

Stars who got sick this year include Jennylyn Mercado who had tonsillectomy, Cristine Reyes who was confined in the hospital for meningitis, Manilyn Reynes who had dengue fever while pregnant with her third child, Joseph Bitangcol was severely injured in a car accident, and Derek Ramsay who broke his arm while playing Frisbee.

SHOWBIZ won’t be showbiz without the controversies and scandals. One of the ugliest fights involved Laguna board member Angelica Jones and humanitarian Illac Diaz. Angelica said they’re exclusively dating but Illac denied this vehemently. This got worse when Illac accused Angelica with malversation of funds intended for the construction of new public schools in Laguna. They have since filed cases against each other in court.

Then there’s the Marian Rivera and Heart Evangelista conflict that started in Laoag City while they’re filming “Temptation Island”, allegedly because Marian got jealous of Heart. Cristine Reyes felt she’s being alluded to by Sarah Geronimo’s comment on dancers and sexy girls, leading to the revelation that Sarah went steady with Rayver Cruz who’s now with Cristine.

Feuds this year include that of Jobert Sucaldito versus John Lapus (they filed libel cases in court against each other), DJ Mo versus Ogie Diaz, talent manager Ricky Gallardo versus Wenn Deramas (who felt Ricky discriminated against his ward DJ Durano), Wenn Deramas versus Alfonso Martinez (son of Albert, who made comments after Wenn in “Tanging Ina Mo Rin” defeated his dad in “Rosario” as best director in the Metro filmfest), Mother Lily and talent manager Arnold Vegafria after Arnold made Carla Abellana do ‘Manila Kingpin’ without notifying Regal with whom she’s under exclusive contract, and Director Tikoy Aguiluz asking his name be deleted from the credits of “Manila Kingpin” after it was re-shot and re-edited without his blessing.

Other scandalous events involved Maricel Soriano being accused by two of her maids of abusing them verbally and physically. But Maria chose to just keep quiet about it, the same with Sid Lucero after being accused by a hardware store salespersons of being abusive to them.

Actor-director Ricky Rivero was repeatedly stabbed in his condo by his own lover. Ms. Earth Karla Henry also stabbed in her own condo by a drunken man. Nadia Montenegro sued Annabelle Rama of child abuse and falsification of documents. Annabelle filed counter-charges of attempted kidnapping and theft against Nadia.

Ethel Booba, still self-destructing after her short lived bout with fame, set her own rented condo unit on fire after finding out her lover is gay. She was booted out and made to pay damages.

The viewing public raised a furor when a six-year old boy called Jonjon Suan danced like a macho dancer in “Willing Willie”. Willie had to take a leave of absence after his show got suspended and TV5 management issued guidelines for him. When he came back, the show’s title was changed to “Willtime Big Time”.

Cherry Pie Picache complained that Baron Geisler took advantage of her while taping a show. Baron eventually said sorry, went into rehab, and claims he’s now a changed man. Other stars who went to rehab are former child actor Jiro Manio and former Manila councilor Cita Astals (diagnosed to have bipolar syndrome.)

Four Azkal players led by Neil Etheridge were put into hot water after single mom and model Amanda Coling complained that he molested her but she was accused of just wanting to get into showbiz after having herself interviewed in various showbiz talk shows. She never filed a formal complaint.

Beth Tamayo was reported to be the Pinay drug mule who was sentenced to death in China. Beth denied this and is now even in the cast of Pokwang’s “A Mother’s Story”.

THERE WERE so many break ups in showbiz, but a lot of celebrity lovebirds also got married or admitted that yes, they’re romantically involved with each other.

THOSE WHO EXCHANGED 'I DOs'

Among those who tied the knot are Oyo Sotto and Kristine Hermosa on a Talisay beach wedding in January (she now just gave birth to their first child, a girl), Roxanne Guinoo and Elton Yap in a church wedding also in January (after Roxanne their first baby, a boy), John Estrada and Priscilla Mereilles in February (she’s now preggy), Rachel Alejandro and international journalist Carlos Santamaria in April (they had a beach wedding in Boracay), former beauty queen actress Dindi Gallardo and American groom Eric Mills in the U.S. in September, Jackie Forster and Dutch groom Michael Franken in Singapore also in September (they already have a daughter), Jolina Magdangal-Mark Escueta at a church and garden wedding in Tagaytay and Kyla-Rich Alvarez in November.

TV host Pia Guanio had a simple garden wedding at the home of her non-showbiz groom Steve Mago in Ayala Alabang. Sexy star Julia Lopez had a grand wedding with rich non-showbiz groom Raymund Halili. Another sexpot, Ramona Revilla, settled down with a foreigner non-showbiz husband.
