John Lapuz Directs His First Full Length Film, 'Pang-MMK', An Entry In Cinema One Originals, About His Own Personal Experiences With Neil Coleta As His Alter Ego

JOHN LAPUZ says that the universe conspired for his first directorial debut, “Pang-MMK”, an entry in Cinema One Film Festival that starts showing in theaters this Friday October 12 and serves as his directorial debut. “Napapasok lang ako kasi may nag-backout doon sa original finalists,” he says. “And in two months time, natapos ko yung movie so it’s really a miracle.”

The movie is actually a sequel to his own story, titled “Origami”, originally shown in “Maalaala Mo Kaya” about 20 years ago. “Tungkol yun sa isang second family,” he says. “Ang movie now shows what happened to that family after 20 years. Ang gumanap na sister ko roon was Nikki Valdez at siya rin ang kinuha ko rito sa movie to play the same role. Playing naman the role of the lead gay character is Neil Coleta as Janus.”

Many stars who are his personal friends guested for free in John’s first directorial job, including Joel Torre as the dad, Ricky Davao, Cherry Pie Picache, Agot Isidro, Jojit Lorenzo, Zeppi Borromeo and the host of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” herself, Charo Santos Concio, in a special participation. We’re told ABS-CBN Publishing is so please with the movie’s story so they’re now coming up with their own book version using the same title of “Pang-MMK”. John has now surpassed his own late father’s accomplishments in showbiz. His dad Jojo Lapuz was a much sought after scriptwriter when he was still alive but he never got to be a director, unlike John who’s now a full pledged filmmaker with “Pang-MMK”. A theatre arts graduate from UST, it’s Direk Olive Lamasan who encouraged John to try going into directing. “Bagong dimension ito para sa career ko,” he says. “But that doesn’t mean tatalikuran ko na ang pag-arte. Siempre, yun pa rin ang first love ko.”
