Period Film About The Romance Of A Japanese & An Igorot Maiden, 'Tabanata's Wife', Wins In Big In The Recent ToFarm FilmFest

THE TOFARM FILMFEST awards night was held at Shangrila Makati last Saturday night and here are the winners. The period movie set in Benguet in the 1920s, “Tanabata’s Wife”, based on a classic short story by Sinai Hamada, won a total of nine awards, including best picture and best directors for Charlson Ong, Lito Casaje and Choy Pangilinan. Its lead actor playing the title role of Tanabata, Miyuki Kamimura, won as best actor while its lead actress, newcomer Mai Fanglayan, won as best actres for the role of his wife. Charlson Ong and Reena Chi won the best screenplay award. Other awards won by the movie are best production design, best cinematography, best editing, and best musical score.

Winner of the second best picture award is another period film, “1957”, set in the year that Pres. Ramon Magsaysay died in a plane crash. It also won the best story award for writer-director Hubert Tibi and the best supporting actor award for Richard Quan in his role as a rebel Huk who becomes a corn farmer.

The third best picture award was won by “Alimuom”, a futuristic film when the earth becomes toxic so people live inside biodomes, directed by Keith Sicat. The People’s Choice Award was won by “Sol Searching”, which also won the best supporting actress award for Gilleth Sandico as Sol, a public school teacher who died and cannot be buried. She won it in a tie with singer Bayang Barrios as the mother of a singing datu in the Visayan movie, “Kauyagan (Way of Life)”.
