Glaiza De Castro Shines In The Title Role Of 'Liway', Based On The True Story Of Kumander Liway, To Be Released Nationwide On October 10

GLAIZA DE CASTRO has just finished doing the afternoon soap, “Contessa”, and now, she’ll be guesting in the primetime show, “Victor Magtanggol”, reprising her role as the fiery Pirena in “Encantadia”. She’s also busy promoting her movie, “Liway”, winner of the Audience Award in the recent Cinemalaya which will have a nationwide theatrical release starting October 10.

She says the title role of “Liway” is one her most challenging roles ever. “Liway is actually her name sa rebel movement,” she says. “She’s based on a real life person dahil mother siya ng writer-director ng aming movie, si Kip Oebanda. Her story happened in Negros. Isa siyang teacher ng catechism na nagtuturo ng liberation theology. E, pati religious groups, persecuted noong martial law so napilitan siyang mamundok at doon siya nakilala as Kumander Liway, but her real name is Cecilia Oebanda. Sa bundok niya nakilala ang naging mister niya at nagka-baby sila. Nang maaresto sila, pinaalagaan niya ang panganay nilang anak sa sister niya. Pero yung mga sumunod pa niyang anak, puro sa loob na ng detention camp and the movie is told from the point of view of the young Kip, na nung lumaki nga, siyang naging director namin. Bale tribute niya ito sa kabayanihan ng mother niya na hanggang ngayon aktibista pa ring lumalaban against the trafficking of women and children.”

She admits that, at first, she was nervous about accepting the role. “Baka hindi ko mabigyan ng justice, so Direk Kip arranged for me to meet some of the real people portrayed in the movie. I was inspired by their experiences, na hindi pinagdaraanan ng ordinaryong mga tao, like yung pagtira nila ng ilang taon sa loob ng prison camp for criminals, Camp Delgado, in Iloilo. Nakaka-inspire ang personal stories nila and I’m thankful na nakasama ako rito sa pelikulang ito which is about resilience and hope in the face of so many daunting challenges.”

How does she and her other “Encantadia” sisters feel about joining Alden’s primetime show? “Of course, we’re all happy about it. Parang payback naman ito kay Alden kasi tinulungan din niya kami with his guest appearance sa simula ng ‘Encantadia’ in 2016. So this is our way of saying thank you to him kaya masaya kami. Bale as of now, one week kaming mapapanood sa guesting namin doon. E, malay natin, baka mag-click, ma-extend pa. Kaya lang, I’m going to London sa end of the month to look for a music school where I can take up music production so sana, hindi magkaroon ng conflict sa schedules ko.”

Someone quips she might just be meeting there her rumored boyfriend, an Irish guy named David Rainey who she’s been dating lately. “He’s a surfing instructor na na-meet ko at lagi akong binibisita rito. He enjoys accompanying me sa mga pinupuntahan ko, pati sa gigs, and I admit enjoy rin naman ako sa company niya. But there’s no formal commitment yet between us. Basta as of now, he’s enjoying na bumisita rito, magbakasyon, and yes, sasamahan daw niya ako sa London kasi may sisters siyia roon and he’ll stay with his sisters habang sinasamahan akong maghanap ng school.”
